Dog Names. What do you call yours?

Do you have a dog? ... and what's it called?

We're getting a puppy in about a months time; we went to choose it last weekend. It's a border terrier, but CAN we decide on a name??!

It's verging on WW III in our house because we cannot decide...

Am off to consult my "1000 Baby Names" book in desperation!

Phew! Fms, thanks for starting a nice non-confontational thread! (Although maybe not in your house!)

I only have Dearly Departed Doggies, going by the names of Rupert (I think he had a bit of terrier in him, but I was too young to really remember him), Maverick (Whippet) and Max (Dobermann).

Willow2 · 16/09/2002 23:21

We've had a Cleo, Poppy and a Holly. But if you're getting a "dog" rather than a "bitch" (and no, I don't mean that confrontationally) that's not a lot of help is it? My friends (now deceased) Great Dane was, after much negotiation, called Rizla - it was a compromise. His mother said that there was no way she was going to stand in a park shouting "Spliff - come here!"

On the subject of threads that cannot cause offence, any suggestions for what colour I should paint my sitting room?

Only joking.

Willow2 · 16/09/2002 23:22

Just in case you were wondering - my friend is fine it's the dog that's deceased.

It really does make a difference what sex it will be....we've had a Jessie, a suki & a Delila - aka DeeDee (bitches) and a Samson - aka Sam & a Jasper (dogs).

For inspiration if it is a full pedigree you could possibly look at its papers, thats how we got Samson because it was a middle name of his 'grandfather' on the paper work so he also became a Samson but called Sam for short. Then when we got a female mixed breed we just called her Delilia to go with his name - but DeeDee for short.

Incidently we found the names that were not too human worked best...like they use in 101 dalmations etc....Spike, Spot, etc etc (not questioning your intelligence just explaining my point)....oooooohhhhhhh will i turn this confrontional don't mean too (hope that comes out as a smile...1st time of trying)

Bobbins · 17/09/2002 00:31

Our little bitch(?!!) is called Ali. After Mohammed, even though she's a girl. I've had a red setter called Flash and a cocker spaniel called Kita. Cats called Bimbo, Pickle, Cleo, Macavity, (or My-cup-of-tea), and Shadow.

SueDonim · 17/09/2002 01:45

Our 'former' Cavalier King Charles was called Holly, and the next one is Sally. Cats have been named Mrs Fiona, Tarquin, Butch (he was preowned and prenamed), Georgie (we called her that while we thought of something suitable for her pedigree status but 18 yrs later she died, still called Georgie), Kitty (there's original) and Maisie Mog aka Mittens. Oh, and the rabbit, called Wilfred.

As your pup is a border terrier had you thought of looking at that area on a map and seeing if there are any suitable town names? I guess maybe 'Berwick-upon-Tweed' might be a bit of a
mouthful, though!

Snugs · 17/09/2002 09:40

We have in the past had border collies called Bilbo and Frodo - because both were very short with fluffy feet when they were pups, like Tolkeins Hobbits; a golden cocker spaniel bitch called Bracken - the lovely colour that it goes in autumn; and a golden labrador Sam (shortened from his pedigree papers).

Now we have a pure white cat called Tippy (a shortened version of Tippex Snowpake )

GillW · 17/09/2002 09:49

Some friends once had a Spaniel rather appropriately called "Hoover"!

Deborahf · 17/09/2002 10:48

Hi Fms - I've had dogs called Susie, Sheba and Candy - all girls!! Have fun choosing.

Mopsy · 17/09/2002 13:34

When I was growing up we had a cat and dog called...Cat and Dog. Easy

XAusted · 17/09/2002 13:40

What about Deefer? ("D" fer dog!) That's what I wanted to call ours but dh said it was too silly so she's called Jess instead. Would agree that non-human names are better so as not to offend anyone! We do have a friend with a daughter called Jess, can be confusing. Whatever you choose, stand in the park somewhere and shout the name. If you feel embarrassed shouting it, choose another! Also, if 6 dogs come running, choose something else!

PamT · 17/09/2002 14:29

Is a border terrier a brindle, wiry haired, smallish dog (a bit bigger than a jack russell)? If so, that is what my neighbours have and they call theirs Wurzel after Worzel Gummidge because he is a scruffy little thing. No offence meant because they are cute dogs but they were never meant to win beauty parades were they?

batey · 17/09/2002 15:07

Have a cat called "p"-for pussycat! If we had a dog it would be Deefer- "D for" dog, not that I'm desparate for a dog or anything!!

Jaybee · 17/09/2002 15:35

We have a Border Terrier - although she now lives with my Mum as I work full time and she likes the attention - great choice of breed, they are absolutely lovely little dogs - great fun. Her name is Dolly - I know of several other Borders, the males seem to have Scottish names i.e. Hamish, Angus, Monty - the females, very girly names, Poppy, Hattie, Molly.
We took ages naming her - longer than naming the kids!!
If you cannot decide could you not each put your favourite in a hat and draw it out!

IDismyname · 17/09/2002 19:49

Thank you, thank you, all who've contributed so far. Realised as I climbed into bed that I hadn't said that it's a "boy" and not a "girl".

Some of your comments have really made me laugh.... and yes, i did think that a bit of non confrontational discussion was in order on this site!

So, we've arrived at the following names (so far):

Ronnie (after my late grandfather!)
Archie
Ben
Gillie (short for Gilbert)
Tom
Matty
Milo (after guess who...)

I agree that I've got to be able to call across field/beach without feeling embrarassed.

For those of you still guessing about Border terriers, they're big for a terrier, bigger than a Jack Russell, tan and black , wire haired and very good with children. The breeder has 2 children, youngest 3 y/old, who delights in picking them all up and manhandling them to a great extent, so bodes well for us!

And yes, PamT, they'll never win at a beauty parade!

No dogs (my parents' dog is Bess (v.original!) and the previous one was Ferdie (short for Ferdinand)).

I do have two cats, called Muriel and Miriam. Not a lot of help though if your doggie's a little boy...

lou33 · 17/09/2002 22:40

Have had one dog called Wilma, one called Henry, and a rabbit called Percy.

slug · 18/09/2002 13:14

My bf has two children with very unusual names, so it amuses her to call her dogs George and Elizabeth. Cue much amusement at the park as she hollers the type of name only a hippie would call their dog and a lumbering great teenager replies.

Jaybee · 18/09/2002 17:00

fms - my favourite out of your choices would be Archie - knowing the breed that would suit!!
Re. fun in the park - a friend's dog is called Hello. She does get some strange looks but that is her sense of humour!!!

bundle · 18/09/2002 18:42

lou- we too had a rabbit called Percy (the other was gilbert). someone I met years ago had a cat called Leonard, and when she talked about him it just sounded like he was a real person

IDismyname · 18/09/2002 19:41

It's looking like Archie.... except I just can't shake the image of that plonker on Glenbogle... Sunday night...can't remember name of prog... Anyway, he's a twat! (Can I say that?)
Might be Monty instead.

OP posts:
jodee · 18/09/2002 21:38

fms, we call it Glenbogie - Monarch of the Glen, btw. (and I did admit on another thread that I quite fancy the bloke who plays Archie, but don't tell anyone!)

fairy · 18/09/2002 22:52

2 cats called Richie and Eddie, as in the two main characters in the BBC2 comedy 'Bottom', yes that was our level of humour then!!
