Help! Trying to make a pull pinata for a Dora the explorer party!

Hi, I need some help!
DD is turning three at the end of November and I have decided to have her a Dora the Explorer themed party.
As money is a bit tight (hahaha hysterical laughter) I am having to be a bit arty crafty and make stuff rather than buy it.
I wanted to finish the party with a pinata, but since the kids are all going to be three and under I decided that the normal whack it with a stick style pinata was asking for trouble.
I saw the pinatas that have ribbons hanging off them and wondered how I would go about making this.

I guess that I turn a box upside down and decorate it, but how do I do the ribbons? Won't it be obvious which one opens the trap door?

Any hints and tips will be gratefully received.
Also any "Dora" ideas for the party

I am sure I have seen these in Woolworths.

codswallop · 13/10/2004 12:38

enid from where?

Skate · 13/10/2004 12:41

Coddy - just seen it in the Argos catalogue.

Lowryn - you can buy these if that's easier!? Can't remember which website but one of the party ones so greatlittleparties.co.uk or partyshopdirect.com or partypieces.co.uk

HTH!! Thinking of doing that myself for ds2's party in November.

blossomhill · 13/10/2004 12:43

My dd has the bath time dora set. It is quite annoying as it doesn't stay together and bits come off easily. Dd does love it though.

SoupDragon · 13/10/2004 12:43

Lowryn - will give the pinata some thought and get back to you. Off the top of my head, you'd only actually fasten one ribbon to the inside of the box - all the others would just be poked through holes so that they pull straight out. The Winning ribbon would be fastened on so that it actually pulls the bottom. Maybe the bottom is a thinish layer of paper and this ribbon is fastened to a loose piece of cardboard acting as the bottom of the box - when pulled it would pull the paper away and everything would fall out.

Needs some work on the technicalities!

ours is this one
Bath time dora
Got it from Harrods but you can prob get in Argos or somewhere.

bettys · 13/10/2004 12:51

I made a pinata recently using these instructions
It's very easy, just be sure to make it well in advance so it has plenty of time to dry. As you say you could turn it upside & attach lots of ribbons to pull it open. As I had lots of 5 yr old boys they enjoyed whacking it, but it still took some hefty swipes from the adults before it split open!

enid · 13/10/2004 12:52

sorry no boat actually

enid · 13/10/2004 12:53

they do it in ELC

enid · 13/10/2004 12:54

according to google, but then the site comes up blank so maybe not.

I'll shut up now.

Skate · 13/10/2004 13:05

Coddy - go to Argos website and the catalogue number is 3477788.

Really must sort out how to do links, I'm sure it's very simple!

codswallop · 13/10/2004 13:06

ta

Lowryn · 13/10/2004 18:58

Ahhh, Soupdragon - that's just what I need. I hadn't thought about threading them through, but not attaching them to anything. Thanks!
I thought about pass the parcel, and yelling Stop in Spanish when the music stopped. Baha or something isn't it?

Coddy, ELC do the Dora Bath Toy in their catalogue. DD got it for her 2nd birthday and I can't bring myself to put it in the bath yet as I think it looks freaky - the head rotates 360 degrees! She's also got the talking backpack which naturally drives me insane but I do love Dora

Lowryn · 18/10/2004 19:08

Ooooh, thank you Pamina3!
I have spent the best part of today making the invitations!
They have a Dora style Map inside which will have three photos of landmarks type locations to help the partygoers find the village hall...Dora fixated, me?
