oxfam, unicef and fwa are my faves.

Should do more re health ones...

Not sympathetic to animal charities as much, I'm afraid, though my sons well up when they find those RSPCA leaflets telling you how little Geri the kitten "was left TO DIE in the cold. TO DIE mummy..."

Twinkie · 12/10/2004 11:52

Give money to Mind and NSPCC by Direct Debit and always to Tommys but can pass most other things by - although since being on mumsnet I have been a bit more generous as I think of people that I sort of know who could benefit from certain charities, certainly anything to do with DS and Autism are now included in those that I won't walk past.

Couldn't give a flying fig about the animal ones either - sad but hey ho I've only so much and it goes to the human suffering first!!

jane103 · 12/10/2004 11:53

foiregn vs home?

woodpops · 12/10/2004 11:53

Any cancer charities, Lupus and Tommys are my faves. Like scrummymummy not sypmathetic to animal charities. And I really hate it when the local scouts, guides etc go into sainsburys to pack shopping to raise money for this or that. LEAVE MY FLAMING SHOPPING ALONE!!!!!

jane103 · 12/10/2004 11:54

do you shout that woodpops?

Marina · 12/10/2004 11:59

Regularly support Scope, Tommy's, SANDS, Oxfam and Christian Aid. Also NSPCC, Cancer Research and Unicef through buying from catalogues. Try and sell raffle tickets for the YHA too!
Like Scummy and Twinkie, feel that animals are lower on my agenda - I feel they're the ones that get all the dosh, Jane...wonder what the true picture is.
Find the "please help a little donkey in distress"/St Tiggywinkle's mentality as opposed to Darfur/Marsh Arabs/Ethiopia etc a bit skewed tbh.
Ooo Woodpops!

Clayhead · 12/10/2004 12:01

direct debit: Plan International, Medcine Sans Frontiers (sp?), Christian Aid Water Project

ALso give to Macmillan Nurses and NCH

Animals come top of the donation list, I believe. Cannot remember exactly which ones, but they do.

Try to shop virtuously, but regret my main support for charities takes the form of paid work

woodpops · 12/10/2004 12:03

No I don't. THey're only kids at the end of the day. Just say it's alright I don't need any help thanks. I've seen them putting eggs in the same bag as spuds and bleach!!!!

jane103 · 12/10/2004 12:05

dinosaur · 12/10/2004 12:08

ActionAid (sponsor child in India), Oxfam, NSPCC. Plus one off donations to several others.

Have never given to the Society for Distressed Gentlefolk.

princesspeahead · 12/10/2004 12:08

rspca the richest charity in britain. has so much money it can't spend its income (from the piles of cash) fast enough, that is why they have new vans every year and spend £250k on prosecuting man who left goldfish while he went on holiday for a week. they are also MUCH too political IMO to qualify as a charity (shouldn't be messing around with the foxhunting/animal testing debates). don't give them a penny.

bundle · 12/10/2004 12:10

i prefer the non-trendy ones like Alzheimers, and for personal reasons asthma, GUCH (grown up congenital heart patients) and dh donates to Amnesty.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 12/10/2004 12:11

Barnados

princesspeahead · 12/10/2004 12:12

bit of back up on that last post from the telegraph

jampot · 12/10/2004 12:14

I donate weekly/monthly to Air Ambulance, Save the Children, Action Aid and donate to/buy raffle tickets from cancer and children's charities.

I avoid animal charities excuse the pun

PicadillyCircus · 12/10/2004 12:16

Direct Debit to Tommys.

Generally always give something to people shaking tins outside supermarkets etc.

Also not enamoured with animal charities.

woodpops · 12/10/2004 12:20

I know you were only joking Jane103. I'd like to shout at them to leave my faming shopping alone but I'm not that much of a bitch yet. I working on it though according to dh?? Is it only my Sainsburys they go into then??

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 12:22

lol Dino. Is there really such a charity?

Twinkie · 12/10/2004 12:23

They never been in mine - that would really piss me off - bet they have picked their noses and wiped their bums and not washed and then touch my pears and melons!! - YUCKY!!!

Woody where do you shop - won't go there ever!!!

I wish their was a compain and charity drive for people abused by Animal Fucking Rights Protesters I would most certainly give to them at the minute as well as the Shoot London Bus Drivers Campaign and Stick Pins in the Eyes of Horrid People who don;t get up for pregnant women drive!!

Marina · 12/10/2004 12:27

There is indeed, Scummy. It - ahem - advertises in the Telegraph. Can't think why they don't also opt for the S London Press .
I always have to repress a snigger at the title of the charity but I think it does help elderly people at risk of being hounded out of their long-term rented properties/losing their home through financial scams etc. I think they may have very sensibly done a rebrand recently...

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2004 12:30

Rebrand sounds like a good plan,Marina. Mind you, there are quite a few charities doing pretty good stuff with v outdated names, I guess. Especially in the disability field.

Skate · 12/10/2004 12:37

Direct debit - Cancer Research UK.

Usually donate to Comic Relief and Children in Need when they are on TV.

Donate to NSPCC (would like to set up DD actually but not got round to it yet).

Always donate to local ones that might be collecting - usually the local hospitals childrens' depts.

Never donate to animal charities - I know that sounds harsh but I have certain charities that I actively support and stick to those. Plenty of other people 'choose' animal ones over the ones I donate to so I don't feel bad about it.

I have to be honest and I do donate more to UK charities than foreign but that's not to say I NEVER donate to foreign ones (to answer Jane103, which noone else has done).

My pet hate is tin rattlers or people that come to your door - I'll bloody choose who I donate to and do it in my own time.

Tortington · 12/10/2004 12:56

nspca. cheeky feckers phoned me up the other day and said " as you already give money ( thank you) we wondered if you would be daft enough to give some more money, cos its easier trying to tap you - becuase we know you support our cause, so if i tell you horrible stories of fekked up animals, will you give more money"

i said no.
