Amnesty (not a charity I know but good cause), Childline, WaterAid, Red Cross, Oxfam...I'm sure theres more...oh yeah, Friends of the Earth, Soil Association, HDRA...Also Women's Environmental Network but I don't think they're a charity...Shelter, Big Issue, Barnardos and similar I make a point of giving to if there's a tin or anything.

Childline actually did come to the door. I don't expect the people to be able to answer questions-they're normally just students, not volunteers of the charity. Maybe I should expect them to, but its never really occured to me.

I don't give to a few charities on principle-including the Salvation Army. This follows a client of mine who got into severe financial difficulties because not only would the SA not provide a halal meal-or even a vegetarian meal which I think would have been fine-or provide any cooking facilities at all for him BUT they refused to waive their charge for food for him-(he had absolutley no money at all at this stage apart from a little Income Support, having just had his home repossesed)-he then got about 2 weeks behind with this food charge and they evicted him. Maybe they're fantastic elsewhere but I wasn't too impressed with that. I give to homelessness charities which aren't religious as a result.

British heart foundation, scope, shelter. yes

also give money to put heart recussitation equipment in shopping centres etc.

hate the charities who stop you in town, give you all the info and then say they only accept direct debits. in this town they are about 3 charities a week doing this, and half of them i have never heard of!!

Standing orders to cancer research and Barnardos. (Used to have NSPCC but they peed us off by sending us expensive mailshots every month asking for more money, so switched to Barnardos then.) Always do Salvation Army at Christmas, give to MS Society on regular basis and get all Christmas cards etc from them. WorldVision, buy the Christmas presents and always send back money with those seed packets they send out.

I won't give to any charity who sends me out lots of 'free gifts' (to guilt you into making a donation) or raffle tickets.

I sponsor a child in Peru through plan, and have direct debits to I think Unicef and Action Aid.

I give to childrens charities and animal (not RSPCA) and environmental charities. I don't like people coming to the door and I don't like tin rattlers, I prefer to choose for myself thank you very much. I won't give to any charity which tests on animals (and there are a lot of them) so that rules out most 'health' charities, including BHF and the big cancer ones).

I give mostly to overseas charities, but I also give to big Issue vendors and beggars. I used to know all the Big Issue people here and in Brighton, but I don't go down to Brighton and we don't have any regulars here now, for some reason. I hate just going and handing over the money and walking off, dunno why really, I guess you do that anywhere else, but I like talking to them.
