my knitting hobby is getting out of control now

i have just bought a knitting machine with free patterns, video manual, info leaflet (how to use) and loads of other bits and bobs for 3 pound. It is pretty new too.

It has really made my day Just had to share!

Now you have definitely blown your cover, "snmum" . I am so impressed, what a bargain! What are you going to knit first?

snmum · 08/10/2004 11:42

i dont know, i haven't calmed down yet! i thought just some simple things to start!

it is a toyota model aswell, i have even rang my husband at work to tell him. i think he thinks i have lost it!

He will so have to eat his words when you are Knitting Queen of your part of the country Blanket perhaps?

snmum · 08/10/2004 12:11

a blanket is a good idea actually.

So far i have handknitted 2 bags and a little purse, and have done a scarf with HUGE tassles on it. The scarf wasintended for my daughter but I misjudged the size of it and it was more large adult size!!

Hiya snmum!! I used to do quite a bit of knitting, has been taken over by children and cardmaking now!
I found my knitting machine in the depths of the loft the other day, has not been used in years now. {even sadder}
When I do knit now it's by hand. Have you done any machine knitting before?
Good knitting-have fun.

snmum · 08/10/2004 13:00

No dingle, i am completely confused. Do you fancy coming down for cucumber sandwiches to show me what to do?

OP posts:
Dingle · 08/10/2004 20:06

I did say it had been a long time didn't I![grin}
Where are you?
You used to be able to go to evening classes. I went with my mum once or twice. I remember her being really pleased with herself for knitting a sock for her homework {big followed by several sniggers} -only problem was we had puppies at the time and it got chewed up before she took it in to show anyone.

Dingle · 08/10/2004 20:18

AAhha!!??

tamum · 08/10/2004 20:37

How exciting! Never done any machine knitting, it looks too complicated but dd has requested a Gr8 Gear Knitting Machine (sic) for Christmas, so we shall see!

Dingle · 08/10/2004 20:45

Think I'd be ok with that one tamum!A girl of my own heart!!How old is she?

tamum · 08/10/2004 20:47

She's 6, Dingle. I have tried to teach her the "proper" way but she found it a bit fiddly (to put it mildly). I'm hoping that she will get so enthused by the machine that she will be desperate to learn to handknit

Dingle · 08/10/2004 20:53

I wonder if I will ever be sitting down with my dd, teaching her how to knit?? Never really thought of it before now.(she has special needs)
I was taught by my mum-can't remember when- I think she was taught by her mum or nan. So it has certainly run in the family with us.
If you are a keen enough knitter I am sure she will pick it up from you later. Is she very creative anyway?

tamum · 08/10/2004 21:13

She's very arty, certainly, so maybe she will. Dingle, I'm so sorry if my post has dredged up sad thoughts. I will keep hoping for you that one day you and your dd sit down together while you teach her to knit.
xx

Dingle · 08/10/2004 21:25

Thanks tamum but not at all. If she doesn't manage the finer motor skills of knitting, I'll have her making cards or something. As long as we have the relationship to enjoy each others company- it really doesn't matter how we spend it in years to come. It's certainly not something I will dwell on-I have plenty of other things to worry about!
Thank you for your concern though.

bundle · 09/10/2004 14:52

dingle, welcome to the knitting club, haven't tried machine knitting myself, just off to the local woolshop to stock up on pink balls of dk cotton to keep my neverending blanket going...

marina, i did that cardi you mentioned for dd1 in a sort of mid smoky blue, it's lovely. also just finished bob tanktop for dd2, in a sort of raspberry ripple all seasons cotton. terribly addictive this...

Earlybird · 09/10/2004 14:58

Anyone know of any knitting shops/woolshops in London? Anything, that is, besides Peter Jones and John Lewis?

bundle · 09/10/2004 15:01

where are you earlybird? there's one near us in N4

Earlybird · 09/10/2004 15:16

bundle, I'm in sw1, but am regularly in n1/n3/n7 area so could probably travel to n4 without too much trouble. Where exactly is the shop/

Dingle · 12/10/2004 13:31

Help-all you MN knitting freaks!
Firstly snmum-how's it going with your knitting machine?? Have you made much yet?
I am hijacking your thread in a urgent request!
dd is getting a Baby Annabell for her birthday at the end of the month. Nanny (& me too) would like to knit some little clothes for dd's new baby. Does anyone know of anywhere (pref online)I could find so nice patterns?

albert · 12/10/2004 13:36

Blimey, what a bargin. I've just started to knit for the first time ever after being inspired by something on MN a few weeks ago. I'm making a scarf for DS and it going VERY slowly but I feel very proud and mummy-like. I reckon it'll be ready for winter 2005

snmum · 12/10/2004 13:43

I dont know Dingle, but I forgot to say

When i looked at the manuals later, i realised I hadnt bought 1 knitting machine but 2!!!!!!

MummyToSteven · 12/10/2004 13:44

dingle - would crochet be easier for her, given that you only really need to worry about one hand - the other just holds the yarn? also you get "results" quicker with crochet as you can knock up lacey things quite quickly and easily

Marina · 12/10/2004 13:47

Dingle, there was an ad in Knitting Magazine (I've outed myself now) which had an address to write to for reissued "vintage" dolly patterns. Not online or anything high-tech like that. I will try and remember to find the ad and post the contact details tonight if that helps.
I have not seen anything else suitable, I have to say.
Bundle, dd is wearing a clover pink Lucky cardy this very day. Not that well-named though - she is off nursery with dh and a face full of snot.

Dingle · 12/10/2004 13:53

MummytoSteven- did you mean about me teaching dd to knit?? I was just being a bit soppy and thinking ahead. She isn't 3 yet. I couldn't teach her to crochet, I don't know how to!

snmum- have you got a ribber with it? Is it electronic or punchcard?

snmum · 12/10/2004 14:00

it is punchcard and has a ribber

are you impressed
