Tell me about South Manchester/North Cheshire. Where to live?

DH's job is relocating to Manchester. We've just had the house valued and we'll be moving in the next few months.
I've heard south of the city is best for areas and schools (true?) DH has been told that Cheadle is a good area and also wilmslow. Any views, recommendations appreciated. Need 4beds and good primary school for the lads.

I shall lurk to see where other mumsnetters think is nice! I have been through Cheadle - seems nice. Don't know about Wilmslow. Not the same LEA as Cheadle is Stockport (I think.

MerlinsBeard · 28/08/2007 17:03

i wouldn't move to cheadle. he would have heard about cheadle Hulme i think ( i grew up there and has changed a LOT in 25 years!)

It really depends on your budget. Wilmslow is a good affluent area but i dont know it particularly well.
Hazel Grove, Poynton and Bramhall are very good areas with very good schools. There is also a fair bit to round and about.

Will your DH drive or travel by train/bus?

MerlinsBeard · 28/08/2007 17:04

Please please don't mix Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme up! They are very different imo!

Lilymaid · 28/08/2007 17:06

I used to live in Wilmslow when relocated from the south. Wilmslow is in Cheshire rather than Stockport (Cheadle). The primary school my sons attended was excellent as were several others in Wilmslow. There is plenty of good quality housing in the area - not cheap by national standards but less expensive than London.

puffylovett · 28/08/2007 17:07

alderley and wilmslow are expensive but very lovely.

there's lots of surrounding villages, for example prestbury is absolutely gorgeous- but depends on what you're looking for TBH.

cushioncover · 28/08/2007 17:08

Thanks cornsilk. Yes, I've sent off for LEA maps and cheadle is stockport and wilmslow is cheshire which seems weird as stockport is in cheshire. The maps show schools catchment areas which should help when viewing houses. theyre a great idea, didn't know about them before til a friend mentioned them. cheadle seems more urban but then its a lot closer in on the map. Any other area recommendations from anyone will also be considered.

Sale and Altrincham are very nice, Altrincham seems to have a lot of posh / giood schools, also parts of Timperley and Sale

MerlinsBeard · 28/08/2007 17:08

Do you want somewhere like th town you came from? what are you looking for in your local area other than schools? ie supermarkets, parks, etc

PenelopePissedup · 28/08/2007 17:08

repeated myself trying to sell sale ha ha

cornsilk · 28/08/2007 17:09

Where are you Penelope?

MerlinsBeard · 28/08/2007 17:09

there is also high lane. just past Hazel Grove, sort of inbetween rural and urban (ie there are farms and hills very close but you aren't out in the sticks) Its lovely there and their main primary is sought after

PenelopePissedup · 28/08/2007 17:10

anywhere around tatton hall is gorgeous and good M-Way links. there are lots of villages around there inc Knutsford

PenelopePissedup · 28/08/2007 17:10

....in Sale!!!!

we love it here

PenelopePissedup · 28/08/2007 17:11

I like parts of Urmston/Flixton too, further in towards Manchester and the Trafford Ceentre

cushioncover · 28/08/2007 17:13

Gosh, thanks everyone.
looking for 4beds, biggish garden and preferably detached. budget about 600k (if house sells for close to a.p) but want catchment for good school. Would we get that in wilmslow? Cheadle doesn't sound too good then? Oh dear...

If you are a WAG Alderley Edge and Prestbury are the villages for you - they are very nice (and the primary schools were very good when we lived in area) but even more expensive than Wilmslow. It depends on your budget and the kind of house you wish to live in/lifestyle you prefer.

PenelopePissedup · 28/08/2007 17:15

600k! swit-swoo!

cushioncover · 28/08/2007 17:15

Don't want too rural. Would like to be able towalk to shops or town centre. want to walk to school too. park close by would be nice. Think I need Kirsty and Phil!

PenelopePissedup · 28/08/2007 17:16
