A very weird thing happened tonight...thoughts?

I was with my friend eating dinner at a nearby pub. It's a bit off the beaten track. No one knew we were there as it was an impromptu visit.
Is just finished eating when the barman came over and said there was a family call for me, asking my first name. I thought it was strange as my mobile hasn't rung or anything.
When I got to the phone a man was on the phone. I asked who it was there was a hesitation before he said a name I didn't recognise. Didn't recognise his voice. He said my car had been clamped. Obviously this was strange as it was a pub car park around 10pm. I felt confused so I said I'd be right out to check.
Two men from the pub who overheard came out with me and my friend, to be safe. There was no one out there in the dark car park that I could see and my car was ok. I went home as quick as I could.
I'm racking my brains and I can't understand this. Was someone trying to lure me out? No other cars were clamped either. No one knew I was at the pub. Could it have been random?
Just thought I'd ask for people's opinions as now I'm a bit uneasy.

Weird

anxioussue · 21/12/2019 01:10

Very weird. Tell the police just in case it's somebody dodgy,

Xiaoxiong · 21/12/2019 01:11

That is weird and I'm struggling to find an explanation. It does sound like someone was trying to get you to come out to the carpark alone to check on your car. Had you paid by this point? Could someone have got your first name from your card? A member of staff, or someone standing next to you at the bar?

JWrecks · 21/12/2019 01:11

Some new kind of scam? Do you have a common first name? Was it first name only?

SpoonBlender · 21/12/2019 01:12

Sounds like an attempt at a scam call, which if it had been someone more tractable would have continued into a "£120 now to unlock it, or £240 if you leave it until tomorrow". Can't quite tell - did the caller know your full name, or just asked the bar to find someone with your first name? Unless your first name is very uncommon that's a good sign it wasn't for you.

DCITennison · 21/12/2019 01:12

How did the barman know the call was for you? Do you know him?

MakeLemonade · 21/12/2019 01:17

If you are a Sarah, Anne, Laura etc I wouldn’t worry and write it off as a scammer playing the odds. If you’re Persephone then I’d be a bit more concerned.

badg3r · 21/12/2019 01:19

Call the police. It sounds very much like someone overheard your name and was trying to lure you out by yourself. Did you drive your friend there or were you in separate cars? Thank goodness you didn't go out on your own.

Equanimitas · 21/12/2019 01:20

Could it have been a simple wrong number for someone with a similar name?

DecemberSnow · 21/12/2019 01:20

The bar man said there was a call for you but then asked your name?

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 21/12/2019 01:33

I guess there could be a few explanations...

A thief trying to lure you outside, to mug you. They might be local and know your name. Or overheard it in the pub

An online scammer who has access to your card details when you went to pay (is your first name written on your credit card? Mine isn’t). Was going to try to get money to release the vehicle.

Weirdo trying to spook you. Either knows your name or randomly said a name

Someone following you on social media saw you check in. May or may not have a motive for the call. Could be someone monitoring you by checking into the pub WiFi

alexdgr8 · 21/12/2019 01:45

sounds odd.
I didn't understand the barman's part in it. did he ask for you by name.
how did he know you were that name.

what is a family call.
would not a clamper etc be more likely to use your surname.
I'm a bit suspicious about the bar staff.
or are you being tailed, by a stalker, or jealous partner/ ex.
ring non-emergency police to discuss.

myrtleWilson · 21/12/2019 01:45

I'd imagine that somehow your ex partner heard you were there, called (or got someone else to call) described you so barman came over. You said he was pretty extreme and broke into your property once to this seems to fit his MO.
Perhaps a chat with the police?

Blondebakingmumma · 21/12/2019 02:22

How did the bar man know your name?

Hillocrew · 21/12/2019 02:23

How did the barman know it was for u

LynetteScavo · 21/12/2019 02:33

It was a wrong number. Calls like this happened all the time before mobile phones and numbers actually had to be dialled.

bananahood · 21/12/2019 03:05

Weird as fuck. I can't think of a good explanation.

Everhopeful1 · 21/12/2019 03:32

Chat to police & ask if they can check your car for a tracking device too. ott I know, but these things happen.

Bluelemon85 · 21/12/2019 07:19

The barman had taken the call, and was asking at tables if anyone was called my name, when I said yes he said there's someone on the phone saying they're a family member. It was late and there were only a few diners. I don't know the barman, he was just a young lad.
When I got to the phone, I didn't recognise the person's voice. I got the feeling th st were lying about their name and when I googled it it was a reality TV stars name!
I definitely think they were trying to lure me outside. On the phone I said "I'll be right out" and they said "ok" and I hung up and went out with the other people and there was nobody, car was fine and no other cars clamped.
I should have asked more on the phone bit it was confusing. I'm spooked. It's weird. Think I'll contact the police to be safe. I wonder if someone in the pub heard my friend call my name and then made the call...as nobody knew I was there.
My name's pretty common but I as a scam, they didn't ask for money and initially said they were family.

Also I never check in on Facebook or anything like that.

Bluelemon85 · 21/12/2019 07:23

My ex is abroad with family at the moment so that doesn't seem likely either. Hed have no way of knowing I was there.

TheBrockmans · 21/12/2019 07:32

Could he have put a tracker in the car or spy software on your phone?

Sockypuppet · 21/12/2019 08:01

If your name is common it's likely they just tried pubs asking for a "Jane".

I bet you surprised him when you said you'd go check the car park. Lots of people take taxis to pubs so they can drink. He was probably ready to take your card details so it could be unclamped at home or wherever. Probably counting on you being tipsy.

GoodBoyPeachGoodBoy · 21/12/2019 08:05

Was there a document visible in the car with your name on it?

Scary.

Bluelemon85 · 21/12/2019 08:21

Sockypuppet your comment makes sense actually. It's a pub but more of an eating place but that's possible.
I checked and there was nothing on show to identify me. I really don't think it's the ex he's mad sometimes but I don't see him doing that.
Very weird, guess I'll never know. Just goes to show though, you really can't be too careful there are some weirdos about.
