Any Welsh Speakers here - Need some help

I am thinking of doing a Welsh evening course, as I really love the language (and really regret not doing it as a GCSE).

My council are running the courses (not really want to say which council though lol).

I would love to become fluent in Welsh, but I know it is going to take a long time.

My ds is also learning welsh in pre-school, and hearing him talk in Welsh really makes me want to do it.

Thing is....just how hard is it going to be?

Thanks

can you speak any other language? french is especially useful as it has the same sentence structure.

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:14

It's not particularly easy but it is phonetic so words sound like they look. Lots of LL's and Th's adn rh's but my advice would be to give it a go- you have nothing to lose.

Da iawn ti am drio- well done you for trying

jofeb04 · 15/08/2007 16:15

Don't want to know french!!
I did a Gcse in German, but also studied Welsh up to the age of 14 (finished in the third form, just before the GCSE starts!)

The main thing for me is that I would love to know enough Welsh to work with clients and to give Antenatal classes!

ooo, I'm going to be learning Welsh soon too jofeb. We;re moving to mid wales and DS will be learning it at school so I really want to be able to speak it at least a little. I've bought a 'teach yourself Welsh' CD from amazon but not sure how much use it will be.

Adopt the tone of Ivor the Engine, litter your sentences with leeks and dragons and pretend to like Tom Jones!

Or you could try looking out for WelshBoris, I believe she pretends to be from Wales.

Dh is learning with dd and is getting better every day. If you satrt evening classes and speak to your ds as well you'll soon catch on. IMO intensive one week courses somewhere like nant Gwrtheyrn are best as you are immersed in it but these can be expensive

katierocket · 15/08/2007 16:17

where is nant Gwrtheyrn pixiefish?

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:17

What will really help is if you find a group where you practice everyday Welsh. Something like Wlplan is a bit pants imo as they drill you on sentence structures that you're not likely to use

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:18

near Pwllheli katie

preggersagain · 15/08/2007 16:18

it is easier to learn if you speak french !!!

I picked up welsh in about two years with no formal lessons just from being around dh and his family, it can be very rewarding to help the lids with their homework etc!

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:18

gorgeous place

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:19

i am fluent in Welsh (have a degree in it actually) and can't speak a word of French so don't worry about that

katierocket · 15/08/2007 16:20

whereabouts are you from pixiefish? (feel free to ignore my nosey question!)

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:21

Anglesey

jofeb04 · 15/08/2007 16:21

Thanks for the advice.

that place looks lovely - just wish I could spare the time. Do you think learning the basics from an audio CD is feasible?

katierocket · 15/08/2007 16:23

sorry jofeb, I am hijacking your thread a bit.

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:24

A girl on my degree course was from the south of England and was studying for a degree in Welsh and Russian. I know of teachers who are second language Welsh and have elarnt it as adults to a very high standard. depends on you, how dedicated you are etc

Pixiefish · 15/08/2007 16:25

i tried to learn Russian from an Audio cd but gave up. Then again I'm not really a linguist. Others pick things up really quickly. It's hard to say as it depends on you katie

jofeb04 · 15/08/2007 16:26

No probs ahout the hi-jack, we can learn together!

Going to look on ebay now for any sort of book!

And start a course in September.
