ok it's not organic or free range, BUT I prefer supporting local shops to the big supermarkets, and he (the butcher) makes a fantastic Boerwoers at affordable prices.

And, even now I've split the packs up to freeze good sized portions.

I've still got 2 packs of Sausages in the freezer (40 sausages) so that's another 3 meals, plus one packet of mince that was left over.

£1.50 (average) price per meal sounds pretty good to me, got Chicken Drumsticks, Boerwoers, Braising Steak, Pork Steaks, Mince and Seasoned Lamb Chops.....so a good vareity too.

Sorry very boring I know but I'm feeling quite pleased with myself that I've come in well under budget (usually pay an average of £2.50ish per meal for the meat) and supported the local butchers........oh and they were lovely - asked me if I was going to be splitting the big packs when I got home to freeze them, told them I was and they grabbed a huge handful of freezer bags and shoved them in the bag for me.

Surely it won't be nice meat?

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 03/08/2007 17:47

WideWebWitch · 03/08/2007 17:48

oh sorry - South African type of Sausage. Trying to find a good picture - but only came up with this one that looks rather dodgy - very nice.

DH just came in as I was looking at that picture and went out again muttering something.

Think I need to go and explain it.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 03/08/2007 18:15

here you go helps if you spell it right

iCod - why would I want to buy "nice ham" - when I'm buying meat for cooking dinner???

jellyjelly · 04/08/2007 11:29

How many sausages do you in at dinner?

moondog · 04/08/2007 11:33

Yes,that's a good deal.
Even cheaper is to but half a lamb from a farmer £20 around here.

I just bought half a pig for £70 and the farmer brought it to my house all bagged up anbd labelled.

pipsqueeke · 04/08/2007 11:39

YAY! ours is fantastic as well - not as cheap as in wales but it's still better than tescos - meat is nicer as well. what with market day on a sat we only have to buy tins/dried in the supermarkeet.

northender · 04/08/2007 11:40

Generally I think organic meat is a rip off anyway. Buy locally and if you have a good butcher then the majority of the meat is likely to be from "free range" animals.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2007 12:41

jelly - in answer to how many sausages at dinner, if I'm doing the "usual" of mash/chips, fried egg, mushroom, baked beans, tomatoes and bacon or something like sausage casserole it's usually 13 (thick ones, not thin). 3 for DS1, DS2 and me, and 4 for DH.....

its not £1.50per meal though is it? its £1.50 for the meat in each meal! you still need whatever you will be eating it with!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2007 12:59

I'm talking about the average cost of the meat (£1.50 as opposed to £2.50 - roughly) - the bits to go with it aren't very expensive in comparison .

aaaah right now it makes sense!

ands i always wondered what on earth that curly sausage was !!

CountessDracula · 04/08/2007 13:30

wow
you eat a lot!

MerlinsBeard · 04/08/2007 14:01

how old are your DSs? When i do sausage casserole (or Soj as DS2 calls it!) we put 8 in which is plenty with potatoes and the veg thats in it already

harleyd · 04/08/2007 14:04

13, lol thats a lot of sausages

TheQueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2007 14:22

DS1 is nearly 7, DS2 will be 4 in November. Even when I put in LOADS of veg and potatoes (casserole) etc any less than 12/13 just ain't enough (I even cut them up into quarters to make it seem like more and they still complain there's not enough sausage in it if I try to put fewer in ).

Yep harleyd - it is a lot of sausages, DH has a massive appetite (though we wouldn't think it to look at him) and the DS's (well the older 2 at least - particularly DS2) seem to have inherited.....I'm just dreading my shopping bill in 10yrs time .

Breakfast atm the moment is 3 wheetabix for DS1, and 2 Wheetabix with honeynut cornflakes on top for DS2. Then DS2 will snack ALL day if you let him, lunch today was 2 slices of toast, slice of cheese (off the block as opposed to pre-sliced), couple of slices of cucmber, 3 cherry tomatoes, slice of ham (sorry cheapo stuff ) and apple. Yes - they eat alot - infact DS1 often has more to eat in a day than I do
