ok it's not organic or free range, BUT I prefer supporting local shops to the big supermarkets, and he (the butcher) makes a fantastic Boerwoers at affordable prices.

And, even now I've split the packs up to freeze good sized portions.

I've still got 2 packs of Sausages in the freezer (40 sausages) so that's another 3 meals, plus one packet of mince that was left over.

£1.50 (average) price per meal sounds pretty good to me, got Chicken Drumsticks, Boerwoers, Braising Steak, Pork Steaks, Mince and Seasoned Lamb Chops.....so a good vareity too.

Sorry very boring I know but I'm feeling quite pleased with myself that I've come in well under budget (usually pay an average of £2.50ish per meal for the meat) and supported the local butchers........oh and they were lovely - asked me if I was going to be splitting the big packs when I got home to freeze them, told them I was and they grabbed a huge handful of freezer bags and shoved them in the bag for me.

ooooh i see, they like more sausage than "stuff".

also suddered at your food bill in 10 years time but then realised that my ds1 (4) is also on his way to being Captain snacka lot!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2007 14:29

yep it doesn't matter how much "stuff" I put in, they still want the sausages, but then if I just do lots of sausages and not much stuff they still complain there's not enough to eat ...and to think DS3 isn't old enough to be weaned yet........please cross your fingers that he's going to have a "normal" appetite like me

Re ham,you should buy boiled ham hocks in the butcher.Cost about £1 50 and have loads of meat on them. That plastic ham is outrageously priced.

oh gawd, how I miss Boerewors . Could MURDER a Boerie roll today (blue sky, not a cloud in sight, about 26C here in London).

stoppinattwo · 04/08/2007 19:06

my grandad was in the boerwoer

md - I would do - but my DS's and DH like odd things such as Garlic Sausage, Lunch Tongue, Pork Roll etc etc, plastic ham itself hangs around for ages and often gets chucked

my father is from SA and I spent many years living/working there

I lived off boerewors - that and biltong. I love the stuff.

There's a SA shop somewhere in Kingston I think but I haven't tasted boerewors like proper boerewors since coming here (didn't know about the Susmans - looks like they know a few things about SA meat!).

Where are you now?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2007 20:16

We're living in Wellingborough, Northants - amazingly this butcher is English but makes a mean Boerewoers.

I'm English, but DH's Zimbabwean - we met out there when I was on my "Gap Year" before University........which turned into 2 1/2yrs, came back married and 4 months pg (and no never went to Uni lol).
