I bought it in an Oxfam shop in Coventry seven, maybe eight years ago.

I believe it's quite valuable, but I would like it to be returned to the family of the man who originally bought it.

His name was J H Pennock, with PIP in brackets. He was a soldier in the Great War. He was in Poperinghe (near Ypres) in October 1917.

He was in the late Signals H/79 Bde, RFA

He was entered as a clark to TocH (Talbot House) in December 1922.

The Book is Tales of Talbot House (1st Edition) by P B Clayton.

Sorry for the monotone delivery of this OP, but I wanted to get all the facts in from the off

So ... anyone have the surname Pennock?

Hi, Sylviad!

What I should do, and will do during the week, is to put him in touch with the lovely relative, the great grandson of Joseph Pennock, from Middlesborough, England.

He's a very keen genealogist, and my guess is that he's probably already spoken with your man, but I will contact him within the next couple of days, and let you know the outcome.

Many thanks for your interest.

Desi, can you make a note of his email now as I am going to report sylviad1's post.

Apologies sylviad1 , but it is simply because that email address is written in a format that can be trawled, which I think is unfair on the poor gent in question.

TheEvilDediderata · 15/10/2007 01:28

OK, StGeorge. Go ahead now.

SatanGeorge · 15/10/2007 01:30

Done it. Don't know if or when MNHQ will do it, but I think it for the best.

Cheers

Oh and bloody well done on the book outcome by the way. Caught up on the thread thanks to sylviad bumping it. Fantastic!

Thank you, Georgy

Was thinking about this thread earlier today.

Made me realise I should try to find out more about my grandfather who served during WW1 and died during WW2. I know nothing about him. My mum has some great photos of him as a baby (long hair and wearing a dress!) and of him in uniform.

Thye are more like postcards tbh and mostly sepia.

Ancestry(dot)co(dot)uk has pension and discharge papers from 1914-1920 available online.

"[The] database contains service records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks who were discharged from the Army and claimed disability pensions for service in WWI. These were also men who did not re-enlist in the Army prior to World War II."
