Anyone know how much is a reasonable price to pay for new shower to be installed (and old taken out, of course).

Man with tool box says £800 ...

that seems an awful lot

what kind of shower? doe sthat include the sjower?

it's only plumbing it into the pipes that are already there?

get more quotes.

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 12:42

What sort of shower?
I never have any work done without getting 3 separate quotes and asking as many people as i can what they paid.
We just bought a really nice bathroom suite inc shower and all the gubbins for £1700 and have fitted it ourselves (really isn't hard to replace things although if electric then you'd need a qualified leccy I think)

lionheart · 18/07/2007 12:43

Pretty standard shower--nothing fancy at all. Seems a lot to me too but then it's plumbing and there's a shortage, blah de blah.

that is way too much.......if i where u id buy my own shower from b&q or somewhere like that and ring around and ask how much it will cost for the labour.....get at least five quotes and tell them youve phoned around so are just wheying up things.if they ask you how much youve been quoted of someone else always tell them them you've been quoted a little cheaper than u actually have e.g: quoted 800 tell them 750,

suezee · 18/07/2007 12:44

but dont tell the first one you ring that you've been quoted 800 quid pretend its your first quote and then go from there

lionheart · 18/07/2007 12:46

Oh lord, this is going to require cunning and stuff, isn't it?

OP posts:
suezee · 18/07/2007 12:51

lol, a little bit, its easy really,
"hi i was wondering if u could give me a quote for fitting a new shower for me, and taking the old one out"

get ur price of them then ring another and tell them the same thing and if they ask how much you've been quoted before just like 400 quid say uve been quoted 350-375

lionheart · 18/07/2007 12:54

He says new shower costs £300 and will take around four hours to fit (total £800).

After that we have to get the plasterer and tiler in to sort out the walls

(because the previous owner thought it was a good idea to build the shower into the wall without any kind of access).

Blinkin' heck.

Where do you live????? £500 for 4 hours work?? Ridiculous; is it an electric shower or straight off combi boiler?

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 18/07/2007 12:56

£300 for a shower????

he's taking the piss!

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 12:58

300 for a shower I can believe but not 500 for 4 hours work, he must be the King of plumbers who drives a gold plated van [wanker emoticon]

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 18/07/2007 12:58

what kind of shower?

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 18/07/2007 13:01

here

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 13:01

www.clickbathrooms.co.uk/pd-POWSHOW002A.htm

That works out cheap at 280!

MingMingtheWonderPet · 18/07/2007 13:02

£300 ok for a thermostatically controlled shower (say Aqualisa, Mira etc.) £500 to fit it though sounds very steep.
Boundary bathrooms and Bathroom Hut offer good deals on showers so at least you could see what is available.

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 13:02

that's what we were going to have but then I had to give up work, hence we fitted everything ourselves!

lionheart · 18/07/2007 13:08

Straight off the combi, old one is an aqualisa so I guess something similar.

He now says £700 because he heard me muttering about checking it out on't net.

I still cant believe he wants to charge you £300 for a shower???? We bought one the other day for £65!!! The fact that it doesn't work is besides the point (no water pressure = no hot water out of the electric shower).

I would recommend you get some quotes and have a good shop around. If it's just a straight forward replacement job, he's ripping you off. If it's just literally replacing the existing shower, i cant see how it would take 4 hours to do this????

lionheart · 18/07/2007 13:12

Labour is £80 per hour (I've just given him £80 to figure out he can't fix it). You have to laugh.

suezee · 18/07/2007 13:14

im tellin ya theyre all con merchants

Rantmum · 18/07/2007 13:17

We got one the other day (electric job) here. It is great.

comes in white or chrome effect

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 13:25

Well sorry but if he's on £80 an hour and it will take 4 hours to fit then I would say he would have quoted you £620, no?

I'm going to give you what we've just paid for ours from Wilbonds and it's all v posh straight off the combi, fixed head and alternative hose thing.

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 13:26

Bearing in mind this is quite high spec it was 357.44 but you can get them for much much cheaper.

lionheart · 18/07/2007 13:27

plus Vat.

He's finished with his speech about not being in it to just make money.
