Who else is terrified of them? I am normally (even with 2 DDs) a rational, fairly calm person.
Tonight however a spider the size of a dinnerplate (ok, slight exaggeration) has terrorised me in my own home. DP is away (naturally), it was too big for me to cover it with anything like a glass to carry it out - which I can do with anything smaller than a 10p. Neither can I kill them as I am fully aware that they are harmless. So now I'm stuck upstairs because I don't know where the feck it's gone. Suffice to say it will reappear as I'm carrying a bowl of cereal and a hot cup of tea tomorrow morning..... It's ridiculous, but I can't even look at the pictures of them in DDs books. Anyone been cured of this daft phobia?

Flossam · 09/09/2004 23:31

I'm not at all scared of them... but there was a HUGE one in our bedroom last night, and I did employ DP to give him his marching orders!! Well I'm pregnant, I can't be expected to do these things!

soapbox · 09/09/2004 23:31

No - I'm totally phobic too!

Like you the biggest ones always appear when DH is away

I am afraid I'm not as kind as you - I hoover them up and hope they choke on the dust!!!!!

Mum2girls · 09/09/2004 23:34

Believe me soapbox, I'm not kind, I just have this daft theory that when I'm dead my own personal hell (cos I'll never get to heaven) will be full of all the spiders I've ever killed! So I stopped killing them about 15 yrs ago...

(and my 1st post on this said I was rational!)

soapbox · 09/09/2004 23:40

ooooh m2g - don't get that picture of hell into my head at this time of night - I'll be having scuttling nightmares tonight

fuzzywuzzy · 10/09/2004 06:34

I'm terrified of them too. Worse thing is dd walks around now, she likes to climb the stairs alone I go up behind her, she makes her way up slowly because she constantly stops to pick things up (usually bits of fluff) and hands it to me going 'here', last time she handed me a spider a skinny one but it nearly frightened me into labour.....

wild · 10/09/2004 09:13

Crikey fuzzywuzzy I would HATE that! ds loves them he leans over the bath and shouts 'hello spider' I am trying not to pass my fear on so I just say careful, don't frighten the SPIDER as I back nervously towards the door. Had a biggie in teh bath when dp away and used showers all the time even though ds v small. It's the way they shimmy around ..
hate worms too, ds and friend delighted with 'snake' they found the other day. Being boys they wanted to stamp on it/chop it up on urged to be gentle ds gave it a KISS bluerch...

Hulababy · 10/09/2004 09:29

Absolutely terrified of them too. I remember a few years ago getting my dad to come over to my house (40 minute round trip) to come and kill3 spiders for me. They had grouped up on the landing right at the top of the stairs, big things too. I couldn't even get to he toilet!!!
Hate them loads. BUT trying hard not to pass on fear to DD.

suedonim · 10/09/2004 14:53

Oh, oh, my phobia. I have to type 'sp*der' as I can't even bear the word. We've had some biggies this autumn - dh says they're getting larger due to global warming! A massive one ran across our bedroom floor last week when we were in bed. I had dh take the room to bits and it eventually turned up on a cupboard door - SPLAT!

Poor dd2 is terrified of them, she had hysterics when one ran across her bed recently. Same thing happened when she felt one in her bed one night. Dh went to the recue - and found our cat inside, all snuggly and warm!! My ex-boss used to say they're all God's creatures. I reckon they are the devil incarnate.

Lisa78 · 10/09/2004 14:55

URGH!!! Hate them! Fortuately, in addition to DH and DS1 who are experienced spider-removers, I have a dog and a cat, who can be relied on to kill anything with more legs than they have

kalex · 10/09/2004 14:58

If I had a chioce I would choose to get rid of all wasps and keep the spiders. Sorry.

tammybear · 10/09/2004 15:03

cant stand spiders! if theyre on the floor, ill kill them, i dont mind stepping on them but if theyre anywhere else There was a huge one in my sink last night and i flushed it down the drain but have had to cover the plugs up hoping itll go out the way it came!! theyre gonna stay like that til my mum comes tomorrow and she can get rid of it for me lol

alicatsg · 10/09/2004 16:08

I'm typing this with my feet up as am CONVINCED theres one lurking now.

I'm petrified. A babysitter told me they were the devils horsemen when I was about 4 and I've never got over it. Even had to go next door at 4am to wake up Auzzie neighbour when there was one in the bathroom, DH was away, I was 7 months gone and HAD to pee.....

Mum2girls · 15/09/2004 20:26

Last night, was picking up after DDs as usual when they'd gone to bed...picked up a open book off the floor in the hall...and you guessed it a huge black one - I nearly peed my pants!

Couldn't kill it tho' as it would just be there waiting for me when I die. In a cold sweat, managed to put a glass over it and there it sat till DP came in 3 hours later...

Our dog will eat them too, but can only see them if they move.

whizzz · 15/09/2004 20:31

I'm not too bad with them unless they run - thats the sinister bit I think. We had a large Praying Mantis on the sofa when we were on hols - that wasn't as bad, even though it was HUGE as it didn't really move. Now if it had flown - I would have screamed the place down !!!!

suedonim · 15/09/2004 21:00

We've had quite a few more indoors. I was sitting up late on Sat night when a giant ran across the floor and disappeared into/under/over/through a wall unit. I scarpered off to bed as quick as you like. Dh couldn't find it next day but he said there was a large 8-legged beast in the kitchen sink yesterday am, so I guess that was it. I bravely hoovered one up in the sittingroom, as well. Please, please let the sp*der season be over now!

Spiders are horrible but can cope if I have a supply of large glasses (dh can then do the tricky thing with the card underneath). Mega-problem with flying-daddy-longlegs (hyphenation dodgy there) - they rattle so much and their legs...ugh! We had loads in last night and there were 5 in the kitchen this morning despite no windows being left open. Ds now calls for "daddy dzz gone" which is better than "Dzz dead" (perhaps not but we try to set a good example for the children except for wasps and flies which are evil and must be obliterated).

polly28 · 15/09/2004 23:25

I had a big mother of one crawling ON MY BACK the other day.I had no top on aswell AAAAAAARGH!!!!!

I am going to buy one of those spider catcher things ,i think they are in the lakeland catalogue or kleeneeze or something
god i hate them

linnet · 15/09/2004 23:30

I went into check on dd1 once night and noticed this thing on the wall, it was the biggest spider I've ever seen right above her headboard! I was in the house on my own so had to be really brave and go get a pint glass to catch it, with a bit of paper over the top, and then put it outside. But the damn thing was so stubborn it wouldn't come out of the glass, aagghh. I left it lying on it's side outside and collected the glass again in the morning.

I also hate daddy long legs, the way they bumble about and bang into things, stupid insects.

My brother in law rescued me from a spider once, he was in plaster from his ankle to his hip but he got up and caught the spider off the wall and put it outside. I try not to kill them if I can help it, would rather catch them and release them. Was a good article in the Sunday post about Spiders on Sunday just past.

golds · 16/09/2004 07:25

If I see one outside, I let them be, if there is one in the house and dh is around, he removes it, if I am on my own, they have to die ! pertrified (sp?) is to smaller word to describe my feelings towards them

susanmt · 16/09/2004 07:45

I like spiders, they eat midges and we have lots of midges!

A friend of mine was hypnotised for her phobia of spiders and it worked really well - once I saw her faint when she saw a big one and now she can do the 'remove in a glass' trick! She was so paralysed by the phobia that she got this on the NHS.

Bibiboo · 16/09/2004 10:01

oooh, hate killing them, but hate them running about too. I try to ignore them in the house, unless they're in my way (like on the bed or toilet) cuz they catch flies which are dirty little things. DH hates them too, so I hope our kiddie likes them or we're in for an infestation!

Mum2girls · 16/09/2004 10:20

Polly - your post made me shudder - I would've passed out.

Did hear a funny story once from a friend - she was camping and her and her dh were having sex and one ran across her chest. DH thought her screams were due to his fantastic performance...

carla · 16/09/2004 10:21

FFS Polly that would have totally FREAKED me! How did you get it off? Those spider catchers from Lakeland are brill, btw. And I agree Socci, where DO they go the rest of the year?

MINNIE1 · 16/09/2004 11:00

My DP was away for the wkend and me alone (which i love) but i have to deal with spiders and i freak out when i see a money spider, My plan of action was to hover it up, To close to the spider if i use a glass and if i do i leave it there for my DP to get rid of.. But the hover it a great idea cause your a good distance away and one its gone its gone.. i then put cling flim on the end just in case it comes back!!!! i have a really bad fear of spiders ...
