Who else is terrified of them? I am normally (even with 2 DDs) a rational, fairly calm person.
Tonight however a spider the size of a dinnerplate (ok, slight exaggeration) has terrorised me in my own home. DP is away (naturally), it was too big for me to cover it with anything like a glass to carry it out - which I can do with anything smaller than a 10p. Neither can I kill them as I am fully aware that they are harmless. So now I'm stuck upstairs because I don't know where the feck it's gone. Suffice to say it will reappear as I'm carrying a bowl of cereal and a hot cup of tea tomorrow morning..... It's ridiculous, but I can't even look at the pictures of them in DDs books. Anyone been cured of this daft phobia?

I have some massive spiders in my house. About 2inches or so wide?

My DD has ate one (urgh urgh urgh), and the other day I picked some laundry up out of the basket and one ran across my chest. I screamed really really loudly!

Oh, Polly, I'd have died, I just know I would. I assume they come into the house in autumn to keep warm. As for spders eating midges and flies - I've never ever seen a spder munching on a fly!! I think it's a rumour put about by sp*der lovers.

I hate spiders too and have to kill any that are a reasonable size. Sorry if a bit cruel but I just can't stand them. I've got much better over the years and can leave ones up to about a 2p size. Anything else meets the sole of my shoe or the hoover.

We've been in this house nearly 6 years now and I hardly see any now (feel a bit guilty about being such a spider terminator!) We do however have loads of other insects (they would probably have been eaten by the spiders!)

I'll probably come across a huge monster this evening now

Dd1 got up this morning and dh made her breakfast. She then came back through to me to say that they had something to show me in the kitchen.

Last night after I'd gone to bed a huge spider had appeared on the curtain in the living room so Dh caught it in a glass then decided to put it into a bowl and cover it so he could show it to us in the morning! Why?!?!? He told me that he'd come through to see if I was still awake so I could come and see it but I was asleep, thank heavens, and that is why he decided to keep it until morning to show us.

It was huge, dd1 was quite delighted to see it, which is unusual for her she's more likely to run away screaming. You could see it's fangs but I didn't look closely enough to see if I could count it's eyes. I made Dh put it out of the house pronto.

Polly I would have been really freaked out if I'd been you.

Here's a story. Last weekend my sister got married, my parents had a full house - 10 of us in all. I couldn't sleep on the Friday night, I think I was too hot so I went downstairs for a drink. It was about 3am and I hung about downstairs for a few minutes before deciding to back to bed, only at the foot of the stairs was this HUUUUUUGGEEE spider, just sitting there. I had no idea what to do because there was no way I could go anywhere near it.
Luckily I heard dh get to go to the toilet so I called to him to help me. "No" he said " I'm having a wee". So I waited, he came out and I called again... he ignored me.
I stayed there for an hour, it had gone 4 when my mother got up and eventually rescued me.
Dh had some serious grovelling to do next day. Said he couldn't remember it!!

Eek, Carla, that's horrible! I had a tussle with a whopper last week. It was sitting in the frame of the window I'd just opened. It was in an awkward place and I had to do battle with fly spray and a long brush for cleaning behind radiators (which i never do!!). Horrid, horrid creatures.

JuniperDewdrop · 30/09/2004 17:09

I like them, it's usually me who has to go into my neighbour's to pick them up. Mind you I'm a bit warier since her daughter was bitten by one in her garden and her ankle puffed up like a ballon.

One night I heard the hoover going at midnight and you can guess why

MUMINAMILLION · 30/09/2004 22:27

Hate them with a passion! I saw a little grey blob thing on my ceiling, and when I investigated further realised it was a spider nest with what looked like billions of teeny weeny spiders crawling around! Can you imagine if they had all grown up and were scuttling around my house!!! Anyway, I hoovered them up with absolutely no remorse. Strange thing is though, that I don't mind tarantulas - have even held one.
