URGENT advice needed on oven cleaning PLEASE, I am desperate!

I really need to some advice on oven cleaning. I have been asked to do it as a favour for someone who lets properties and has someone moving in on Friday. I am being handsomely rewarded but obviously need to do a really good job. TBH when I do mine I am not as thorough as I need to be and it isn't in the state that this one is in. Anyway went tonight to get started and there was loads of burnt on food (yuk, had rubber gloves on) and god knows how I am going to shift it and make it look brand new.
Tips and advice needed please. I really, really appreciate it.
I'ne tried Mr Muscle and wasn't impressed.

Get an oven cleaning man in, they charge about £40 and it well worth it. Sorry, I'm no good at cleaning ovens

MrsDoolittle · 08/09/2004 21:16

Blossomhill - If you can get to a Tescos they have some really heavy duty oven cleaner, it's in a box and melts everything in site - you have to wear gloves and a mask provided. I was in a similar situation a few weeks back. It's cost about $4 or £5.
Failing that go the old hardcore method of pure ammonia, but you would also need heavy duty gloves and mask and to leave it for a bit.
Mr. Muscle doesn't cut the mustard I'm afraid.

Branster · 08/09/2004 21:17

Hmmmm....only know of MrMuscle. All the other ones I've used never really worked. You'd need to follow the instructions exactly and leave it on for about 2 hours I'd say. Do the trays at the same time BTW. I know there are some paste cleaners that are suppossed to be magical (sold in Homebase I've seen, one of those products they advertise on a TV, no idea what it's called but it comes in a plastic cilindrical box), worth a try but DO try it first on a small area as they often are abrasive. I'm sure someone would know of a product from Lakeland, but by Friday???...
Did you check it is not a self cleaning oven?
Just realised, you probably already know everything I've written and more. ...

Lowryn · 08/09/2004 21:19

Try this it's fab

Branster · 08/09/2004 21:20

I think they sell a similar product to the one mentioned by MrsDoolittle in Robert Dyas. I used it once (bought from a catalogue) and it did work beautifully (i forgot about it) but it is deadly stuff so handle with care, also stinks but does the job. You need to apply to dry cold (well, not warm) surfaces and leave it on for a while, then itjust washes off with all the gunk.

Sainsburys magazines are so helpful sometimes.

For enamel linings it recommends that you use a proprietary cleaner on them, (I think this means Mr Muscle Oven cleaner - sorry).

For stay clean oven linings - do nothing as it will destroy them.

For racks and removable oven glass and those metal hob rings - soak in bath/sink of hot water with biological washing powder for a couple of hours. as it will make the dirt easier to wipe off.

I think the rest is just fairy liquid, greenies and elbow grease.

Hope this helps

OVEN-MATE by Lakeland! comes with gloves and a brush, just brush on and leave and wipe off. It is really fantastic, and I use it on mine, and was amazed when it did really work. Make sure you do not get it on aluminium or teflon coated items. Comes in a 500ml bottle so will last a while. Good luck

Branster · 08/09/2004 21:22

and this strong stuff is good for the wire racks (and trays) too. you'd need a wirewoll for the racks when washing off still but they do come out very clean.
do i spend 1/2 life cleaning ovens or what??!!!

blossomhill · 08/09/2004 21:46

Thanks everyone. It is so useful having MN. Whenever I have a dilemma/problem someone always knows the answer and is there to help

How about using Fairy power spray? or something called "Dr Beckmann Rescue" which is an active gel oven cleaner which has no nasty smells, not harmful and it works! You can get it from most supermarkets!

blossomhill · 08/09/2004 21:59

I was thinking of trying that Fairy power spray. Is it any good?

Naaah - you want something tougher than that. The one in the orange box, I'd say.

blossomhill · 08/09/2004 22:07

Mrsdoolittle - I am off to Tesco first thing. The reason I am so adament that it needs to be perfect is that I am getting £100. Which is a very good incentive!

Branster · 08/09/2004 22:09

blossomhill go for it! Buy the strongest stuff you can find! £100 for an oven???? I'd be a millionairess with that. I love cleaning ovens!
