Has anyone seen any very smart/dressy ones (i.e. not big chunky knit affairs)in the shops - I'm thinking of getting one instead of a shawl to put over my dress at a wedding. + Any vies on whether a poncho will look ok with a smart dress and big hat?

yes I want one hat isnt all holey - like an opaque one

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 16:45

top shop online had some that were more like a crocheted shawl which were nice not sure if theve still got them though

SoupDragon · 06/09/2004 17:14

Why?? They're ridiculous items. They weren't good 1st time round when I was a child and they're not good now.

Tissy · 06/09/2004 17:20

sorry, but I can't see that it would work over a smart dress at a wedding, but I'm prepared to be proved wrong. I'm afraid I have a mental image of rather tacky knitted woollen ones though! I suppose it would have to have a large neck so that you could avoid messing up your hair when you take it off (or would you keep it on for the reception and dancing?). If you have to have a "wrap" of some sort, I would go for a shawl in a woven fabric, rather than knitted.

Freckle · 06/09/2004 17:34

I've seen some very nice lacy/shimmery ones. Avoids the problem of the wrap falling off your shoulders all the time. Have you looked on ebay?

fio2 · 06/09/2004 17:40

I wouldnt wear one to a wedding tbh

fairyfly · 06/09/2004 17:52

I think you need to buy a cape for a wedding, like a poncho but tend to be a little less bulky, and prettier in the detail. Haven't got time to look for one now, there are loads, here is an example, but you can get really beautiful ones

fio2 · 06/09/2004 17:57

yes that would be nice, or a pashmina

tammybear · 06/09/2004 17:58

new look had nice ones. i brought two, and they had a few colours to choose from. they're really nice and quite thin

lou33 · 06/09/2004 18:26

I think a poncho and a smart dress with a hat would be reminiscent of miss marple. Sorry.

lou33 · 06/09/2004 18:28

FF! That bloody site! Now i am looking at that instead of doing dinner

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 19:26

got to agree go for a shawl/cape with a posh dress and ditch the hat it will look ott
think outfit needs to have simple style/lines to carry the hat off so imho opt for one or the other
hope this is not too cheeky

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 19:30

jasper · 06/09/2004 22:40

MrsFogi I saw a very nice posh black see through poncho number today in Dorothy Perkins and seriously considered it as having wedding potential

fairyfly · 06/09/2004 22:51

fairyfly · 06/09/2004 22:58

i can't get the image of someone stood at the back of a church dressed like that, its made me a bit hysterical

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 22:59

i love that green cape think ill have to buy it even though ive nothing to wear it with its exactly what i had in mind for a poncho-love the white one too-bit impractical though-but georgeous

unicorn · 06/09/2004 22:59

ff in the style of Billie Piper!!!!!!
I'm with soupy on this...bad memories of knitted poncho by well meaning (???) relative at age of 9 I think, has put me off for life.
Billie Piper may well suit them.. but for ages 40+... I think not.

unicorn · 06/09/2004 23:00

then again there's always Clint... now he wore it well!!

libb · 06/09/2004 23:01

Fairyfly, I have photos of me at various music festivals like that!

I bought a half poncho/jumper thing from Monsoon today, I tried it on at home but haven't made my mind up about it yet (at the time of purchase DS was crying, I had vouchers that needed spending and I couldn't go upstairs to see the rest of the range as they only do stairs and stroppy shop assistants. . . plus the chances of me going shopping in nearby city soon are zilch)

In theory the poncho jumper looks great - but makes bf bosooms even bigger and I can live without that! I am hoping that weaning/dieting etc. will shrink the bosooms and I will look slinky instead

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 23:01

me to its cheerad me up and every one else in here too!! LOL

libb · 06/09/2004 23:02

and even slinkier in a poncho - so long as I don't look like Michelle in BB5

SoupDragon · 06/09/2004 23:03

Half poncho half jumper???
