Can you park on single yellow lines on a bank holiday?

I did and have received a £40 fine. I seriously thought that you could park on a single yellow line and was so shocked to find a ticket. I am seriously p**d off as well as I could have done without it TBH as have spent a lot on dd's party, presentsthis week etc.:(

Regulations on single yellows vary between boroughs and then there can be specific restrictions on the same yellow line. Usually there is a smallish yellow backed sign on a post that will state the restirction eg no parking between 6am - 8am or whatever. Sometimes there is an arrow on the sign to let you know that the restriction operates from the post in the direction of the arrow/to the next sign. I've sometimes had to really search for the signs to find out what the restrictions are. There is a street down the side of St Pauls which is single yellow and the bottom half of it is evenings only yet the top half you can park on Sundays. Very trying.

As for parking in disabled spots, I can't beleive anyone has the gall to admit to doing so and then trying to justify it. I have a family member who has a blue badge and have been with them when disabled spots have been occupied unlawfully. It can cause an awful lot of distress. These spaces are for the convenience of the disabled not someone too lazy to find somewhere else to park.

lavender1 · 31/08/2004 11:53

wasn't too lazy at all, colleague said park next to Waitrose, I had a permit for Market traders which I thought gave you permission to park anywhere as you have to be near the stall...and if I had plants and stuff to carry wouldn't be able to walk miles...genuine mistake I made

Hulababy · 31/08/2004 12:08

Have to say that I also disagree that the two are the same. They are not, sorry.

Disabled space is a complete blanket ban on anyone without a blue badge, regardless of day and time.

Single yellow line is limited parking times which vary. Many round here though are either rush hours times morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday, or work times 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. I think it is an easy mistake to see that a Bank Holiday Monday as being excluded as it is in affect the same as a Sunday - and is for many purposes.

I think the main thing here though, regarding claiming the money back, is whether there was a sign displaying this information.

I live in a restricted parking area and traffic wardens just LOVE bank holidays, beleive me!

Avalon · 31/08/2004 12:20

Erm - I thought the disabled badge was yellow? Has it changed? Has it ever been yellow?

Thomcat · 31/08/2004 12:21

The parking rules were out of the window at Carnival yesterday, the parking around Notting Hill was hysterical to be honest. I'd like to have seen the tow trucks working out what to do!

Fio2 · 31/08/2004 12:26

avalon it did used to be yellow and orange (I think!) but it is now blue.

Ity will be all the colours of the rainbow

please! I have explained my stupidity, I don't need people to keep taking the mickey ...I am only human

lou33 · 31/08/2004 14:06

So let me get this straight, you say parking on a yellow line is a no no to you, even though you say your market trader permit would allow you to, but yet you chose to park in a disabled spot instead?

Fio2 · 31/08/2004 14:07

you wouldnt beleive how many people park in disabled spots without a badge (you most prob would lou) it is infuriating

but dont worry my very bad tempered dh usually spits on the car and kicks it on the way past

Fio, when dh brought ds2 to get me from the train station a few weeks ago, he went to park in one of the two disabled bays, one of which had a legitimate blue badge displayed. In the other was a young teenaged couple, who had parked there because it was closest to the platform , and they were sitting there, in their little red battered nova, music blaring, laughing and chatting, wondering why dh was glaring and mutering at them witha murderous look in his eye. He said you couls see the horror slowly dawning in their eyes, as he went round the back of our car, opened the boot ,lugged the wheelchair out, and put ds in it. He said they promptly roared off to a place they couldn't be seen, looking thoroughly ashamed of themselves. As they should have been.

SofiaAmes · 31/08/2004 21:31

In the usa the ticket for parking in a disabled spot is generally $200+. Needless to say, it is very very rare that you find someone illegally parked in a disabled spot. Most people wouldn't even pull into one just to drop people off.

lou33 · 31/08/2004 21:34

You can be fined up to £1000 for parking in one here iirc, Sofia.

blossomhill · 31/08/2004 21:46

My mum phoned up the parking people and apparently it was in the local paper (a year ago ffs) that the road was going to have certain restrictions. No signs or anything anywhere so I am going to appeal as I was on a single yellow line. Fingers crossed but I don't hold out much hope.
Lavender - do not put me parking on a single yellow line (not double, single - check out the Highway code) in the same bracket as someone parking in a disabled bay. I have lots of friends with disabled children and wouldn't dream of parking in a disabled bay in a million years. Almost in the same way that I wouldn't park in a mother and child spot without a child. A disabled bay is for a disabled person. A yellow line has certain restrictions for that reason to allow you to park at certain times, which I did!

I have said my apologies isn't that enough.

Lisa78 · 31/08/2004 21:50

then I wish they would bloody well enforce it Lou. I see cars in disabled spots at my local shops, with no stickers in and NEVER do they get a bloody ticket
(Whereas an innocent motorist such as myself, is a few tiny little minutes late back to her 2 hour parking spot to find Brunhilde the meter maid with a murderous gleam on her face and there I am, £35 the poorer)
Though they usually get roundly abused by me... the parkers, not Brunhilde, DH and DS1 have been deeply embarrassed by my behaviour on these occasions but I don't care! Ignorant, thoughtless gits!

ooooooo · 31/08/2004 21:51

it would appear not lav

kid · 31/08/2004 21:53

blossomhill, I think you should appeal against the fine but be aware that when you appeal against it, if you still have to pay it in the end, I think it goes up to the higher charge (the charge for after 28 days). I can't see how you can loose, especially if there were no signs. Go for it, and let us know how you get on. BTW, parking on single yellow lines is in NO way the same as parking in a disabled bay.

lou33 · 31/08/2004 21:54

Me too Lisa.

lavender1 · 31/08/2004 22:01

I hang my head in shame (haven't you said enough aboout how wrong it is)...am sure you have done driving things in your time that you wont admit too but are equally as stupid.....please give it a rest ffs!

Ronniebaby · 31/08/2004 22:02

Ok ladies, we have established the rules on disabled parking, and now we have all learned about single yellow line parking.

I'm not agreeing with Lavender or defending her, but enough is enough now, she has learnt her lesson, otherwise this will get out of hand, and will be deleted asap. Which is ashame for Blossomhill

I know and see soooo many people parking in disabled spaces, and it annoys me, just the same as the w**kers and cows who park in the Parent & Baby spaces, when they clearly dont have a child. Maybe it's me but I just park in a normal space even it if means walking or pushing pram or trolley as I cant be arsed with parking up close. I understand with disabled people and parents (being a parent myself and having another on the way & having had a disabled grandmother etc), before anyone has a go at me.

Now can we hear no more on the barrage of disabled spaces etc.

Blossomhill - I sympathise with you, very unfortunate, but can you let us know how you got on fighting your corner

iota · 31/08/2004 22:02

Not trying to start a fight, but if there are say 6 disabled spaces and they are all empty, is it really that bad to park in one for a couple of minutes to go to the cashpoint etc?

(not that I do BTW, heck I don't even use the M&T spaces an I have 2 small kids)
