When did you go grey?

I am starting to get paranoid about my hair turning grey, when did you start to notice grey?

Kateandthegirls, how long did you wait for the old colour to grow out before going to the hairdresser? Because my roots are driving me mad, and I really want to cover them up, but I know I should wait for about three months and get them done professionally, but I can't bear to wait...

Started at 27. Daren't think what it looks like now. I dye it myself but really should be a proper grown up about it.

DP is 39, has busy job, two children, and a minimalist attitude to hair and skincare, and has ONE white hair. And virtually no wrinkles. **Er.

suedonim · 27/08/2004 20:53

There could be some truth in that, Albert! I was auburn-haired when young and am now nearly 50 but have only a few grey hairs. My mil was red and is now a sort of faded beige and she's 84.

glitterfairy · 27/08/2004 21:09

I cant answer this question as I have dyed my hair since I was fourteen!

jasper · 27/08/2004 21:11

15

lou33 · 27/08/2004 21:20

Glitter, me too, well 13, but I can see them at the roots, and there seem to be more each time!

Davros · 27/08/2004 21:20

Oooh, I'm 44 and have a few grey hairs. Mind you, I've got fair/mousey hair and I don't think it shows as much. My sister whose got lovely very dark brown hair has had to dye hers for years. I know I've got more than I think now as I notice them when I go to the hairdressers but, day-to-day, without the professional hair wash, they're not noticeable. I vowed a few years ago not to dye my hair again until it really needs it as the maintenance is such a pain and I don't think I've got near the dying stage yet.

blueteddy · 27/08/2004 21:21

Too bl**dy early!!
I think I noticed the 1st b4 I was 20 & now (age 32 nearly) I have loads!
They seem 2 definatly got worse since having a second child!
Thinking of soon going down the highlight road!

jodee · 27/08/2004 21:22

Anybody with grey NOT dye their hair?

jodee · 27/08/2004 21:23

posts crossed - that would be you then, Davros and Blueteddy!

Polgara2 · 27/08/2004 21:27

First started going grey at about 15 but again Mum was completely white by 30. Have to dye it back to my natural (!) colour which is dark brown but it is a real pain because the roots seem to come back so quickly. I've tried having permanent colours at hairdressers and now dh puts semi-p on for me - not much difference IMO (except for the cost of course!!) Have considered letting it grow out but am totally freaked out every time I see just how much grey hair I really have under the colour and it makes me feel really, really old!!

MeanBean · 27/08/2004 21:32

Polgara 2, my hair was naturally extremely dark as well, and I've started to just use the level 1 ones, because the roots grow back so quickly anyway that there's no point using even semi-permanent anymore, and I figure that when I stop, the growing out process won't be quite as awful.

Am off to put some level1 on my head!!

glitterfairy · 27/08/2004 21:32

I have a friend (well he was) who says that there is a stage in a womans life where their face and hair dont match any more! My hairdresser says he has sorted out anti aging hair remedies but not the face. May join others in botox therapy.

MeanBean · 27/08/2004 21:33

Meant to say, it's better for the hair roots because of no ammonia, no peroxide.

glitterfairy · 27/08/2004 21:34

Lou join the club! I dont look mostly but went to a terrible hotel with a lift with mirrors over my head and nearly died of shock! Went straight to get a brighter pink colour put on!

Soon!

fabarooney · 27/08/2004 21:43

My dad started to go grey in his early teens and was pretty much fully grey by the time he was 19. I've inherited this which is a bit of a bummer given that our original colour is pretty much the darkest brown you can have without it being black! My first grey started appearing before I was 5, it speeded up in my mid-teens and by the time I was 20 I had to start using the dye. Au natural, my hair looks like Cruella de Ville's do. I started off with the DIY dye, but found that I couldn't get it close enough to my roots. The colour is also so uniform that it looks fake. At the hairdresser I can have a colour put through the roots with a couple of highlighting colours just to make it look more natural.

I probably will stop dyeing it eventually - I think there is nothing worse than seeing a wrinkly old lady with jet black hair!

Polgara2 · 27/08/2004 21:45

Meanbean - by level 1 do you mean the 6-8 wash type ones? If so do they really only last that long or a bit longer? Could be costly!!

MeanBean · 27/08/2004 21:53

Hi Polgara - I find that after about 3 weeks my roots come through anyway, so 6-8 washes is about three weeks - I haven't tried it yet, but that's my theory!

Polgara2 · 27/08/2004 21:57

Hmmm Meanbean, will be interested to see if your theory works coz I am so fed up of my roots!!!! Are you sticking to dark colours or trying something completely different - I can't decide what other colour would suit me. Have tried blonde highlights - made me look even older

Tessiebear · 27/08/2004 21:59

I am planning on keeping up my blonde highlights FOREVER and then i will never know if i have got any grey or not

lavender1 · 27/08/2004 22:15

was 19 and ds who's 9 has 3 already ( we have very dark hair)
