Need to let off steam!!!! I sent my bichon frise to a residential dog training company in Wales(Royvon dog training) and I picked him up yesterday and he has not been taught anything and I paid £600 for this. I have never been so annoyed in all my life. I have spoken to the owner who was just snotty to me and when I said my dog has not been trained, he just walked away from me.

I cannot believe I have been ripped off.........what a horrible company. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Issue them with a summons in the small claims court, or tell them that you're going to unless they pay up straight away. It could be very amusing to see him trying to prove that your dog has been trained in court .

£600 for a dog training course!!! What are they supposed to teach them: find gold mines??!!!

CountessDracula · 27/08/2004 15:54

Set your dog on them!

Seriously though, what did you expect from this course? Surely if you train a dog it responds to the trainer, not someone else. Did you get him to demonstrate your dog being obedient etc with him?

TBH I think this is a bad quick fix solution (sending dog away for training) and the only way to train your dog is to put in the time and effort yourself. Dogs have a pack mentality and a very large part of their training is you showing them that they are bottom of the pack and not the Alpha Male as most dogs attempt to be. How are you going to do that if the dog is trained out of the home? They have to gradually gain respect for you.

Write it off to experience IMO. Unless you were promised something specific eg your dog will come back walking at heel, sitting and waiting to command then you don't have a (dog) leg to stand on.

v. good CD. Exactly my thoughts! Can tell you have a dog.

CountessDracula · 27/08/2004 15:57

Branster · 27/08/2004 15:57

yes. a completely mad one here!

Branster · 27/08/2004 15:58

but i love it sooo much. it's my first baby really.

Angeliz · 27/08/2004 15:58

:O
CD, you sound like my dp. He's always telling our dog that he's the Alpha male:O

I do agree though, would be very hard for you to have as much authoruty in dogs eyes as the trainer. Very strange!

Angeliz · 27/08/2004 15:59

Where are all the smileys???

CountessDracula · 27/08/2004 15:59

Branster · 27/08/2004 16:14

oooh...i can just give her a big cuddle looking at her. beautiful!

nutcracker · 27/08/2004 16:16

Thanks

We are thinking of getting a dog (dp has said no, but that has never stopped me ).

The thing i want to know is, can you ever leave them on their own for a whole day ??? I am a SAHM but obviously sometimes I will have things I have to do, and may be going back to college in Sept, which would be for one full day a week, so the dog would be alone from about 8:30am to 5pm.

I asked a similar question on a dog forum and got the impression i shouldn't leave them for that lenght of time.

Branster · 27/08/2004 16:16

2wildbabies to answer you question, we deviated here, sorry.
i would assume they did train your dog. you neeed to talk to the trainer and ask to demonstrate to you what the dog can do, then copy his/her tone of voice, hand signs if they use any and methods, then you should be able to see the results. if not, ask for your money back.

Branster · 27/08/2004 16:17

i'd say no nutty.
no longer than 4-5 hours unless you can ask a neighbour to take the dog for a proper walk during the day.
and definettly not in the first few months because you're house will be destroyed by the dog

Branster · 27/08/2004 16:18

even if teh dog has access to a grden they still get bored for a whole day and need company, exercise and to some extent entertainment.

Branster · 27/08/2004 16:20

have a look at the local vets, they might know of local dog walkers (reliable of course) or you might be able to find someone who takes the dog to their house for the day (i would expect to pay about £10 for that for a day)

Angeliz · 27/08/2004 16:21

Nutty, i'd say that was too long but in an emergency it would probably be o.k, just a bit bored and maybe have an accident.
I would NOT leave a pup for that long though. When my dog was a pup i left him oneday for less than that but removed everything from room that he could chew. When i got back he'd chewed all the door frames

(Still love him though!!)

nutcracker · 27/08/2004 16:22

Oh no

Was so looking forward to getting one , am more disapointed than i thought i'd be.

Good job i hadn't promised the kids.

nutcracker · 27/08/2004 16:23

Sorry for hijacking your thread 2wildbabies.

hercules · 27/08/2004 16:24

When we had a dog we paid a dog person to have our dog and train it for a few days. We saw no difference but after a short while realised how unrealistic we were being.
I agree that it is very difficult in these circumstances as you need to be the one doing the commandments etc.

The best thing to do is take it to classes where you are with it doing the training under instructions.
