Urgent - what's it like to live in Lancashire?

StickyNote · 25/08/2004 12:36

My friend's DH is in negotiations about moving to a company in Chorley. She lives near London and knows absolutely nothing about Lancashire at all. Can anyone help? Where should they look to live (or not)? What are the schools like (her eldest is going into yr 2)? Are there any good local websites that she could have a look at? Obviously they'll go up there and have a look but she wants to try and get a feel for things before they go.

Many many thanks in advance.

wet/
lots of rain there

My Uncle lives in Bolton le sands - house over looking the cockle picking bay but lovely views normally
Loads of private schools

oh coddy, you beat me to it, WET!!! is exactly what I was going to say!

Lancashire is a great place to live apart from the weather - there's a lot of nice countryside and the people are friendly and chatty, although the natives can be cliquey.

Any idea how much their house is worth? Although prices have gone up here they are still cheaper than down south so they would get a much better house. I live in Ribble Valley, the schools are very good here and it's easily commutable to Chorley, property prices are relatively high for Lancs but not ridiculous and there are quite a lot of incomers to make friends with.

Glitterfairy lives in Blackburn - you get a lot more house for your money there but schools aren't so good.

I live in a little village just north of Chorley - I have lived in the North West since 1996 and in Chorley for nearly 4 years. It is a little market town. Don't know much about schools as dd is only 9 months old. Bigger places close by include Preston, Bolton, Blackburn. Chorley Borough council website is here

Janh the first article on that page is about nicotine patches for lancashire teens!:o

Fio2 · 25/08/2004 13:14

oh that takes so much effort rather than :o !

JanH · 25/08/2004 13:26

Ah yes, they have to smoke as there is nothing else for them to do here

(It is hard work isn't it!)

JanH · 25/08/2004 13:40

Janh, their house is probably worth about £450k - what kind of house would that get them? Could you post a link to a good estate agent? TIA.

a blady big house, i reckon

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 25/08/2004 15:15

Synchronicity! MIL's house will be up for sale shortly so they can move nearer their darling grandchildren - it's near Chorley, has 3 beds, 2 receps garage, nice garden, overlooks open fields, not worth that much tho' - but I'm sure she'd take it for a quick sale

it was bloody wet there last week, no seriously, really really wet

JanH · 25/08/2004 15:52

I can give you links to Ribble Valley agents, SN, just to give her an idea.

anderton bosonnet
Honeywell
Mortimers
Athertons
Hewetsons

Lots of barn conversions in that price range if she likes that sort of thing.

Around Chorley would probably be cheaper but I don't know it at all.

edam · 25/08/2004 15:57

In answer to your question, not as good as Yorkshire.

Lonelymum · 25/08/2004 15:58

Don't know anything about Lancashire but I regularly use a nationwide estate agents website: rightmove.co.uk which will tell your friend a bit about the sort of house they could afford.

JanH · 25/08/2004 15:59

Watch it, lady...

JanH · 25/08/2004 16:00

Believe it or not, Lonelymum, they never have anything round here (I've looked!)

(The watch it was to edam btw :)!)

StickyNote · 25/08/2004 16:27

Does Lancashire have grammar schools?

OP posts:
Fio2 · 25/08/2004 16:31

ask jeeves, he wil know

JanH · 25/08/2004 16:32

Aha - yes it does. Clitheroe is good and has a vast catchment area (loads of places with Blackburn addresses are in it but you'd have to be sure before you bought); also Bury, and Bacup & Rawtenstall. People from here also try the one at Skipton.

There are 2 good county schools in/near Clitheroe too - Ribblesdale and Bowland - if she wants to look at those.

There are single-sex grammars in Lancaster, but that's a bit far from Chorley!

StickyNote · 25/08/2004 16:33

Bless you Janh!
