Do you leave Dc is car when paying for petrol?

I'm just wondering what other people do.

I'm paranoid about leaving DS in car after growing up hearing so many of these stories where a car was stolen with a child in the back.
Now when cars have immobilisers I assume it's more difficult.

How do you fill up? I know there are stations where you can pay by card at the pump, but haven't been able to find one anywhere close to where i live.

yes I leave them in the car. Realistically they are safer in a locked car than shepherding them across a busy forecourt with cars reversing and manouvering. You can keep watching them, and imo is safer.

McDreamy · 07/06/2007 11:02

I do leave them in the car while paying for petrol but I lock the car. I think you'll find this has been disscussed loads of times on here but I'm sure many people will reply. I feel it is safer to leave them in this instance than crossing a busy forecourt with 2 young children.

Nemo2007 · 07/06/2007 11:02

I leave mine as physically to get all 3 in and out, strapping into seats etc is probably more of a risk. I lock the door and go to pay but dont stop watching them.

munz · 07/06/2007 11:04

yes I do now never used to but I lock the door and watch the car while i'm paying that's if I don't pay a thte till.

it's not always pratical even with 1 child to get them out and in again esp if there's a big que of people waiting.

NoodleStroodle · 07/06/2007 11:05

Leave them in car but don't lock car. Why not? Because if someone bashes into my car I would like to be able to get them out - think highly unlikely that they will be stolen more likely car driven into by white van man.

munz · 07/06/2007 11:05

never thought of it like that noodle

foxinsocks · 07/06/2007 11:06

this should be another one in the top ten mumsnet asked questions

I leave mine in the car. Nobody would dare take them - they make far too much noise.

McDreamy · 07/06/2007 11:06

Good point noodle but it would some impact to bash a car on a garage forecourt and totally wreck all doors and the boot.

NoBiggy · 07/06/2007 11:06

But NoodleStroodle, if someone bashes your car you have the key anyway?

And if the emergency services have to get them out a locked door won't be an impediment.

bozza · 07/06/2007 11:07

I leave them in car unlocked. Partly because of noodle's reason and partly because of the alarm.

McDreamy · 07/06/2007 11:08

Yes the alarm can be an issue, we've got a button that can allow moevement inside the car but if the doors were opened the alarm would go off - only on one car though!!

munz · 07/06/2007 11:08

I just thought it would be easier for someone to take them if the door wasn't locked. and then I would never forgive my self - althou also wouldn't forgive my self if the car was bashed and DS was trapped/hurt.

oh the world of being a mother.

munz · 07/06/2007 11:09

our alarm doesn't seem to go off with people sat inside, prob cos the car's old.

McDreamy · 07/06/2007 11:09

We feel guilty if we do we feel guilty if we don't eh?

Wolfgirl · 07/06/2007 11:09

Yes, I do too; and if they have fallen asleep when Ive gotten back from the supermarket, say.... I leave them there whilst I trapse in and out, and EVEN!!!! put the stuff away.

I do have fears, but realy really do try and get over them, because I refuse to be ruled and enslaved to such things.

On the Wright stuff this AM, it was said that a child would have more chance of being hurt/killed in a car accident (lets pray and perish the thought now), than abduction.

You have to live in peace. I dont have time as I type to further discuss responsibility, sensibility da da da etc, Im all those, but still... you have to get on with things - non?

saintmaybe · 07/06/2007 11:10

I would always leave the car unlocked

If something happens to me, or my bag or key, or the car is hit I really don't want my child trapped in there.

Are there really many stories of cars w dcs being stolen, in UK?

LoveAngel · 07/06/2007 11:11

Nope, he always comes with.

NoodleStroodle · 07/06/2007 11:11

I don't want to wait for an emergency service - I want to be able to open one of the 5 doors and get DC out. Central locking often goes wrong if one door is affected.

munz · 07/06/2007 11:12

wg -ah see I always bring the shopping in regardless of if J is asleep or not and leave him in the car witht he doors open etc. but do bring him in then normally can do it and he stays asleep so goes straight into the cot - from that POV i'd be worried about over heating.

Mcd - yes I say they put a blinking guilt chip inside when the baby comes out so you don't notice

harleyd · 07/06/2007 11:12

i think its more likely that somebody would want to steal my car than my kids.

archiesmummy · 07/06/2007 11:15

NoodleStroodle central locking shouldn't get affected by one of the doors tbh.

I'm glad "everybody" seems to leave DCs in car, because it did occur to me that taking DS out of car seat and carry him into petrol station was a bit of a mission.

Sorry, didn't realise this was a popularly asked question, I tend to stay in the Feeding forum.

Thanx all for the replies.

I take mine but I only have 1.

bozza · 07/06/2007 11:24

I have been known to leave DD asleep in the car on the drive also.
