Do you leave Dc is car when paying for petrol?

I'm just wondering what other people do.

I'm paranoid about leaving DS in car after growing up hearing so many of these stories where a car was stolen with a child in the back.
Now when cars have immobilisers I assume it's more difficult.

How do you fill up? I know there are stations where you can pay by card at the pump, but haven't been able to find one anywhere close to where i live.

ds1 is 13.5 now, but when he was a baby there was an awful story in the paper about a woman who left a sleeping child strapped in his car seat when she got back from a shopping trip. The car was on the drive of her house but she'd only been back a few mins when it burst into flames and the child died.

I was paranoid after that.

Twinklemegan · 07/06/2007 23:09

No, I'm paranoid someone will drop a fag end in a pool of spilt petrol or something.

hana · 07/06/2007 23:09

try not to
make a point of getting gas when they're not with me

hana · 07/06/2007 23:12

or pay at pump

I leave DD in the car with doors locked. I have to say I remember reading somewhere that locking the doors gives a little extra strength to doors so less likely to fold in.

Yes I do, with the doors locked. The car has an alarm and immobiliser so chances of them being driven off are extremely tiny.

fussymummy · 07/06/2007 23:24

Never have and never would.
Now they're at school and nursery its easier as i can get it when they're not with me.
When all 3 were at home small i'd take them with me to pay.
Tough on anyone waiting.
Not always possible to see your car while paying, so no way can you see your kids!!
What if they choked or were sick?

taffy101 · 07/06/2007 23:36

I have always left them in car, but yesterday had just baby in car when filling up and thought 'ooh maddie' and locked the door. Blonde moment when couldn't get petrol cap off!!! Just shows how laxed I have been in past. Yes - BAAAD mummy has never locked the car in the past when paying for petrol but will do from now on.

Clary · 07/06/2007 23:37

I would leave mine in car, doors unlocked, in case anything happens to me or the car.

But in practice I now use drive thru or even better pay at pump at Asda.

taffy101 · 07/06/2007 23:37

No offence to blondes btw

Clary · 07/06/2007 23:38

These cars exploding in flames stories - how old are the cars? Ours is about 4 yrs old and regularly serviced, so frankly v v unlikely to explode.

fortyplus · 08/06/2007 00:16

A friend of my dad's had a one year old car that caught fire when he was driving it.

MrsSpoon · 08/06/2007 00:19

I used to but our new car has an alarm with a motion dectector that sets itself a few seconds after locking the car and I don't want to leave them in an unlocked car as it is far more nickable than our last car too.

Roskva · 08/06/2007 09:59

However safe your own car is, the old banger that pulls up on the pump next to you may not be . Actually, at the nearest tesco to me which has pay at pump, the forecourt is so tiny, you often have to wait until the car in front of you droves off before you can drive off to, as there will be someone queuing behind you, and pulling out of the petrol station is downright dangerous because you have to pull across the stream of cars going in and out of the main car park. Morrisons is better, but you can't pay at the pump.

Darciesmum · 08/06/2007 10:05

I leave Darcie in the car when i get petrol, i lock the car and i can still see her.

Biglips · 08/06/2007 10:10

yes i leave DD in car - locked and keep an eye on her at all times

americantrish · 08/06/2007 11:35

no, we wouldn't. but since usually ds is in the car the same time as me and dh, dh gets the petrol and i stay in the car
