I don?t think I?d choose the same name that a close friend had chosen, even if it was a personal favourite ? it just doesn?t seem very original. It?s not that I think it?s a particularly big deal just that I?d want my baby to have a special name at least amongst close friends. Also that friend?s baby would take on the name, I would imagine. Isn?t it amazing how children grow into even the most bizarre names? First time you here them, you think no! A few meetings later and you couldn?t imagine them called anything else. I guess I?d be quite flattered if a friend named their child the same as mine ? but I wouldn?t think them particularly imaginative.

Pamina

Me and hubby could only agree on one girls name so we called our daughter that name (jessica) even though we knew that two other people (who had become good friends) were also going to call their daughters the same. Out theory was that it was all our own choices why change it for anyone else it is your child and besides it wouldn't clash in the long term as lots of people have the same name!! Anyway we ended up sharing a nanny with one of our NCT friends which was fine when both Jessica's were babies but as they became older it became a tad more tricky (give that toy back it's jessica's...?) So I am afraid nicknames are now used even between the two girls themselves. I would not change my choice of name even with a crystal ball as both girls suit their names (and nicknames).

I disagree about originality when choosing names if you like a particular name then go with it no matter what the surrounding circumstances as it is your child and your choice!

I called my new baby, Sasha, and in the birth announcments in the local paper (which I always check for some reason), there have been another 3 Sasha's (or Sacha) born since my baby. I thought I would go for something slightly different, but it seems that by the time she starts school she may be one of, say, 3 in her class.

My eldest daughter, Ashly, had a boy in her class called Ashley. When we moved house, and she subsequently moved school, she has now got a girl Ashleigh in her class too.

My son, Daniel, is one of 3 Daniel's in his nursery.

I called my second child Tallulah, because it was a name that I loved, and also I thought unusual enough to not hear that often. However when she was born we discovered that there was another child in the next road with the same name! It really shouldn't matter how many are called the name you pick as long as you love the name and it suits your baby. If it's of any interest the two tallulah's are almost opposites of each other, and it suits them both, mine being white blonde, blue eyed, and the older Tallulah being jet black hair with brown eyes.

Someone I know has just called her child by exactly the same name as my daughtr - first and middle name. (She's had a daughter as well, by the way!) They'll never see each and I suppose I should feel flattered but, somehow, I'm a little peeved.

Lou33 Tallulah is an EXCELLENT name! Does she get called Lulu? ( thats what I call my sister Louise)

Dh and I only just realised on the weekend that our dd Tessa's name spelt backwards is "asset"! Can't believe it took us 5 yrs to notice...oh well better to be an asset than a liability!

callie · 20/02/2002 14:06

What do you all think of the name Anya.
A mum from the school has just called her baby that and I quite like it!

Paula1 · 20/02/2002 14:35

I think it's quite cute, but might get mistakenly pronounced as Enya??

bundle · 20/02/2002 14:53

a woman I work with is called Ania (the Polish spelling apparently) and was cross when a colleague tried to lump her in with a type of potato which called Anya. I still think it's a lovely name.

tiktok · 20/02/2002 17:07

I wish I had called one of my daughter's Estella - I liked the name ever since first seeing the film version of Great Expectations (Estella is the rather snooty child who grows up into a sightly less snooty woman - played by Gwyneth Paltrow in the modern film version). But when the time came for choosing names, I forgot ! But it's nice, isn't it? Unusual, too.

tiktok · 20/02/2002 17:09

Whoops.....horrible misplaced apostrophe in daughters...my pet hate!

callie · 20/02/2002 17:29

Estella is a lovely name, tiktok! I will add it to my list.

jodee · 20/02/2002 17:47

My cousin's daughter is Anya, and she has a sister Seren and brother Finn.

lou33 · 20/02/2002 23:31

We call Tallulah a lot of names, depending on her mood and what she will allow! Most of the time it is Loops, often Loopster and sometimes Loopylicious! We used to call her Loopy but she has decided that is a no no from now on! I shall tell her you like her name, it will cheer her up because she has had shingles this half term and has been in agony, so thanks Jasper!

lou33 · 20/02/2002 23:34

I forgot to say, we called our oldest child Lily Delilah. Lily mainly because we really like the name, but also after a family friend (who didn't seem to mind !) and delilah because I was a Tom Jones nut as a kid and always used to belt the song out at every opportunity, so I got to loving the name!

JoAnne427 · 22/02/2002 16:32

I like ALL the loopy names - loopylicious!

Witchypoo · 20/03/2002 19:30

My daughter is Scarlett India Page (without an "i" - her dad's idea) I knew that there was "Scarlett" in "Gone with the Wind" but I didn't know that one of her sisters was called India!

Basically we used up all our favourite girls names in one hit. I hope no. 2 is a boy

Rhiannon · 20/03/2002 21:00

My DD's middle name is Rosebud. R

Paula1 · 21/03/2002 08:08

My mum swears she went to school with a girl called Rosebud Bush!!

manna · 21/03/2002 09:50

A list of my ds & frinds names:

Gabriel (ds)
Malachi
Solomon
Jeddiah
Hope
Grace
Sidney
Elsa
Corisande
Vlad (middle name)

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that spring to mind! And all under 2, mostly under 1. I think it will be the James and Janes who will stand out in the future

hwr · 21/03/2002 10:23

MIL most outraged by current popularity of DH's brothers' names : Joshua and Gabriel. Not a raised eyebrow nowadays, but very odd when they were at school, (now in their 30s).
Funny how fashions change, a friend went through the OT looking for Biblical names that weren't too poular. Her twins are Saul and Seth.

Tallulah means laughing water. It's North-American Indian, and comes from the Tallulah Falls in Georgia, although it's probably more well known for the actress Tallulah Bankhead . My Tallulah has Daisy as her middle name.
