Would you ever try to cut down the amount of fruit a 6 year old eats?

no I'm not boasting, but he seriously IMHO eats too much

they have a fruit snack at school .. since supper he's had 3/4 mango, large bunch grapes, 4 apples, 2 pears and a banana (from 5.40 to 7.30)

he doesn't have stomach problems .. would you try to cut it down?

As long as it is balanced out with protein, carbs etc and he doesn't start with digestive problems after all that fibre, I wouldn't worry too much.

foxinsocks · 24/05/2007 19:30

no

but I'd factor in some other snacks like toast or a slice of cake or summat

perhaps he needs more filling snacks iyswim

hayes · 24/05/2007 19:30

as long as he doesn't have the runs he will be fine, my nephew like this too....bloody cost a lot though

Twiglett · 24/05/2007 19:33

he's normally allowed fruit or bread after dinner but we're out of bread which probably made it slightly worse but its every night ..

so no health risks / dental?

(I can't keep up and have arms the length of an orang-utan from carrying the fruit home )

Apples are high in carbs, bananas has a lot of potassium (good for the heart), mangoes are nice and grapes too. does he eat this instead off? My ds is currently sustaining on yogurt, fruit, porridge, cheese and milk.

Twiglett · 24/05/2007 19:35

as well as ..

he's not keen on potatoes (in any form) and rarely eats cheese but apart from that will eat most things happily, especially spicy stuff and meat

Perhaps be a bit careful with the grapes - they are very high in natural sugars.

cathcart · 24/05/2007 19:38

have to add, well done though!

TwoIfBySea · 24/05/2007 19:40

Twiglett, my dts(5)are fruit mad as well but nowhere near like what you are dealing with.

They love a bowl full of fruit salad and both of them come out of school each day with extra fruit as not all their classmates want their provided fruit snack and dts gladly take any leftovers! I wouldn't see too much fruit as a problem, better that than tons of sweeties.

rantinghousewife · 24/05/2007 19:41

As long as the rest of his diet is balanced, I wouldn't worry too much. My dd is exactly the same and (if allowed) would polish off a whole bowl of fruit in one sitting. Make sure he has a cup of water after fruit because of the acid, dd's dentist told me this.

ILoveDolly · 24/05/2007 19:44

potassium is good for you but my husband is always saying i should be careful dd doesn't have too much (he is a DR not a nutter...!!) as she has a stupendous fruit intake.... I am not sure why he's soooo obsessed with that though! Personally I think generally you should try to stick to no more than 5 or 6 portions a day - it could be a bit acidic on the old teeth, after all. But then well done for having a dd with such a healthful appetite!!!

treacletart · 24/05/2007 19:48

My ds is alitle fruitbat too. I'm sure his diet is a hundred times better than mine.
I was led to understand that sometimes eating too many bananas can be a problem - they can have a constipating effect and in severe cases cause kidney probs with too much potassium. I had a mate who went to the doctor with pains in her armpits and was told to cut down on her 3 bananas a day habit - pains went away.

sandyballs · 24/05/2007 19:49

One of my DD's is the same and i was wondering this, as even though it's natural sugars, it's still sugar. She does have rather loose stools though and trouble wiping, sorry TMI

ILoveDolly · 24/05/2007 19:54

ahh treacle thats interesting. and a small child has obviously senstitive kidneys which is why that say to dilute juice

Lauriefairycake · 24/05/2007 20:26

I think it's too much fruit because a 'portion' to a child is much smaller than adult size [obviously].

To me fruit is really just sugar (the body can't differ between orange and chocolate really). Actually I hate oranges most of all and never drink pure oj.

I don't eat fruit myself much but prefer to get my vitamins from vegetables - of which I eat about 6 portions a day.

So it sounds like a sugar craving to me.

Feel free to ignore me as noone else has said the same - happy to be in a minority on this one

Rachmumoftwo · 24/05/2007 20:32

Mine eat loads of fruit too. Sure it's ok as long as they don't have runny poo or tummy aches as a result. As others have said, it's all about keeping a balance between the food groups.

luciemule · 24/05/2007 20:43

My boss (24) had rotting teeth and had to have loads of root canal treatment due to her massive fruit consumption. I guess citrus fruits and grapes would be worse but it certainly put me right off oranges because of her teeth - they weren't nice!

FrannyandZooey · 24/05/2007 20:45

If he is not too skinny and doesn't have the runs, I would probably leave it

is this a one off binge or does he do it every day?

I do know what you mean, I have been limiting ds's fruit consumption since the day he was weaned

ruddy fruit freak he is

FrannyandZooey · 24/05/2007 20:48

how about insisting on a banana and some nuts / seeds first? Dried fruit is more filling somehow although can be bad for the teeth.

I also crave fruit and sweet things and agree it is not the healthiest habit, but I think some of us may be made that way. Better fruit than junk.

moondog · 24/05/2007 20:48

lol at your ds and the length of your arms Twig!
My dd like this. Tonight has had an apple, about 300g of grapes, a punnnet of respberries and a punnet of strawbs.

slightly agree with lauriefairycake

mine love fruit and would eat it all day

I dont let them because a) it is sugary and b) its bloody expensive!

apples I dont mind them eating plenty of

I bought a pack of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, a mango, a melon, a big bag of grapes, 16 apples, 8 bananas, some plums and some kiwis on Monday and they ahve all gone.

moondog · 24/05/2007 20:54

Amount of sugar in fruit doesn't bother me.I probably eat about 6 portions a day myself.

Enid · 24/05/2007 20:54

I much much prefer them to eat veg

I dont like fruit much myself but am happy to eat tons of veg
