We are considering a move to Birmingham.

Looking for a 3/4 bedroom semi-detached or detached house, large garden and garage in a nice area. Good schools and travel links to the city. Any ideas anyone?

We live on the border of Sutton Coldfield & edge of Erdingon and it is a lovely road, really good neighbours and gorgeous long gardens. We have lived here for 8 years and have never had any problems. I would not want to live any further into Erdington only because I know it used to be rougher.
The houses tend to be slightly less expensive purely because you are classed as Erdington although they are looking at changing the borders so half of the road (if not all)will become Sutton - that's how on the border it is.
So please do not judge all houses in Erdington postcodes to be bad.
I would not willing move from here, in fact as I am sitting here typing I am listening to birds and quiet - does that sound so bad. We are only considering moving to live by the coast but as already stated I love where I live and for the difference in you will pay for the house I would seriously not rule out other areas. I think our house is valued ar around the £200000 which I think is more realistic.

Bearwood is nice, near lightwoods park. Right next to Harbourne but without the price tag as technically not part of Birmingham, only a couple of miles into city centre though so very commutable. Lots of nice large victorian terraces, lots of good schools (mainly infant and junior), definitely 'up and coming'. High street is a bit shabby though. Because its not part of Birmingham council tax is cheaper. Lightwoods park and neighboring Warley woods are really nice and undergoing a multi million pound makeover

Defintely Sutton or areas around - streetley, four oaks, mere green, little Aston etc. All lovely. You will need a car though!

Places like Edgbaston, Solihull, Sutton are lovely and leafy, with nice houses but you will pay more. Kings heath and Mosley are also nice and easy to get into the centre. The thing with Birmingham as with most large cities like London for example is you can have nice areas with shitty roads in between and areas referred to as rough with ok roads etc. The best thing you can do at this stage (if you move) is to spend time visiting the different areas and renting before committing yourself. I am from Birmingham and lived there for about 25 years and to be honest there are only a handful of places I would actually choose to live in if I moved back, a lot of the inner city areas are run down, feel a bit grotty and resemble one big council estate

Very useful thread. I'll be moving to Birmingham in March with family including a 1.5 year old son. Considering my work place will be Brindley Place, it appears only Edgbaston, among the popular family neighborhoods, will be convenient to commute by public transport. Is this correct?

Are there areas in Solihull or Sutton Coldfield that have direct bus/train links to the center? Else I will have to forego these lovely areas.

Another question - what are the pre-school / library groups / play group options available for toddlers in Edgbaston area? Is there a cost for these facilities? This will be my first time in the UK hence the basic questions.

You can get a train from Solihull to snow hill, loads of them, and only take around 15 mins. Then walk from snow hill to Brinkley in 10 mins
But I would start your own thread under property section or chat, as this area is a not very well looked at page!

Oh, and this original thread is 9 years old!! Grin

May also be worth looking at bromsgrove or alvechurch if not too far out.
