We are considering a move to Birmingham.

Looking for a 3/4 bedroom semi-detached or detached house, large garden and garage in a nice area. Good schools and travel links to the city. Any ideas anyone?

A friend of mine has just moved from Kings Heath and left a lovely garden! And the red light district really is confined to a few roads... but yes, it's not quite Solihull (thanks God, some may add...)

jampot · 12/05/2007 17:50

wordsmith - im not saying solihull is better than a red light district but its no good pretending it isnt there. Mummyluvs has asked for information about areas not just the good bits.

In addition though a friend of mine used to live on St Agnes Road in Moseley and he reported constantly finding syringes and condoms in his garden

mummyluvsyoo · 13/05/2007 09:06

Hi all - thanks for the suggestions and the postcodes, which have been helpful.

When I say multicultural I am trying to be diplomatic. Mine and DH's parents are not from GB, but we were born here and lived here all our lives. Having said that I don't want to live in a "ghetto" or area overpopulated by one ethnic group, I prefer more of a mix. I worry about these young people who are running around with guns/knives - I don't want this to have a negative impact on my son's life, or his education. I don't want my DS to go to a school with an imbalanced ethnic mix. We are aethiests, so a church school is out of the question. I know that in some places B'ham has same problems as London and I want to avoid this.

Wordsmith, if I am already hearing things like "red light district" and "condoms and syringes in the garden" - that already puts me right off to be honest. Even though it is confined to a few streets - does that mean I have to do a big detour to get home if I don't want to be affected, or tell my DS not to walk home that way. Personally I don't want to live like that. I don't mean to be sniffy - I just want to live well away from "gangstas", drug dealers, pimps and hookers, hoodies, etc etc.

Sally sparkle - why are you moving if you don't mind me asking - just up/downsizing?

Me again - can I have some more "good" Solihull postcodes please for nice average income areas.

B90, B92 are also good

jampot · 13/05/2007 11:21

also search Shirley, Olton, (Olton is very nice and ultimately is the link between Solihull and Acocks Green which you previously mentioned. There are some lovely houses in parts of Acocks Green but it is in Birmingham (which means higher Council tax etc)

Im no good with the postcodes and areas in Sutton (other than Four Oaks)

Sutton is in the Birmingham LEA, which has (not enough) Grammar schools.

Solihull runs its own comprehensive LEA: a large percentage of the (affluent) residents use the local schools.

bea · 13/05/2007 17:53

have a little drive around bournville when you are visiting cadburys... (where cadburys is!) ... very nice and if you get right into the heart of Bournville Village Trust land... it's really lovely! Plus it has the only Tesco Express in the whole of the UK which doesn't sell alcohol!!! ... but then again this could be a bad thing!!!!

jampot · 13/05/2007 19:42

Good point Bea - You cant buy alcohol in Bournville - no pubs or anything

seems weird as its on top of the university

mummyluvsyoo · 13/05/2007 21:33

Well I have seen houses for under 250K which is our price range in Solihull, so I guess it really is a question of going there and seeing for myself what these areas are like. We are just a normal professional (but not "affluent" family, looking for a nice area, with good schools for our son. Thanks for the postcodes - it's been really helpful.

the areas of solihull north of the borough are the ones to avoid if you can

mummyluvs - please feel free to cat me if you wish with any houses you find

Tabkat · 13/05/2007 23:17

In my experience the nicest parts of Solihull are around the centre itself (B91), Dorridge/Knowle (B93) and some parts of Shirley (B90). When I lived there I was told to avoid Chemsley Wood and Marston Green (have never visited them myself though).

mummyluvsyoo · 14/05/2007 09:40

Hi all - my head is reeling, not sure what to do now. Been raining all weekend and Northampton feels more of a one horse town. Been in house looking at rightmove, upmystreet and everything else.

Thanks jampot for your offer - once DH decides about the job, I might take you up on it.

I live quite near Chelmsley wood nd marstongreen and would advise you not to live there. COleshill is a pretty nice area postcode B46, but it is further out the city centre and transport links are being built with a train station opening in october.
Water Orton is also another nice arean with pretty good schools, just secondary schools arent so strong this side of town inless you can afford to pay.

jampot · 14/05/2007 17:58

good thinking penelope - i forget about Coleshill and surrounding area. Water Orton is nice too

jampot · 14/05/2007 17:59

Old Marston Green is very nice though isnt it?
