i'd like to imagine moving somewhere. please tell me about where you live.
this is where i live:
jersey
mild british weather, fields and hedgerows, beautiful beaches, good schools, very low crime rate
high population density, bog standard house costs £400,000, reasonable house costs £550,000, 3 bed house rent is £1,500 per month, loaf of bread costs £1.20. main industry is international finance, no unemployment. bit of a problem with alcoholism and binge drinking. very conservative. expensive to leave (on a plane). mostly english people here with jersey families, portuguese and polish and some kenyans. language is english but use of french apparent, eg in road names.
can be about 10 years behind the times.

I don't.

Because I know.

Aberfeldy floods.

No, thanks!

But the patter is good. The locals are good.

DD1 freaked us in Dunkeld, though.

None of us had ever been there.

We parked on the banks of the river, and straightaway, DD1 starts 'rabbiting on', as DH says, 'I want to go to the park and see my sheep.'

And she just ruins the whole trip, rabbiting on.

Finally I say, 'Then show me the bloody park, Eilidh!'

She points to an archway in a wall otherwise full of buildings we'd have not looked at twice.

'It's through there.'

We go through, and I'll be damned if there's not a park with fences and frickin' SHEEP grazing away.

My blood ran cold.

DD1 says, 'The Lowland 'ben shee' (whatever that is) is come to be bride of tully (whoever that is).'

We got her the fuck out of there and we're not going back there again for all the tea in China!

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 01:14

BAby
We are going because of 'house' prices.

House. Good luck finding one of those!

This is how it has been here for a thousand years.

It will not change. One must either change to suit this or move on.

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 01:17

TnOgu..are you an artist..with people? Or an artist for 'sales'?? Or both?

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 01:17

I am worried that I'm going to regret things in the morning!

Babyramone · 12/05/2007 01:18

Expat and tnOgu that sounds lovely. My grandfather is a farmer (or was) and even though I like it here have to escape to his for sanctuary.
Mind you he now lives in wee market town but still has the farm with my uncle. They now run it as a holiday home and rent the land out. There's no place like so quite and loads of wildlife.
I live on very outskirts of Edinburgh so don't feel to hemmed in. Bloody planes ruin it a little though.

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 01:18

[sorry]

I paint and sell - have outlets and exhibit

Oncebitten · 12/05/2007 01:19

in a rural area where the only crime u worry about is an adolesent staring at you on your way into sommerfeild. That is one of the positives. The negatives would be that it is slightly racist... not great when you are black! I may well move on but the quietness is very endearing...

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 01:19

I paint abstract mostly

husband an artist

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 01:20

better than me or so he'd have me believe

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 01:22

arrogant and selfish and very foolish

Babyramone · 12/05/2007 01:24

I have a crappy wee terraced house which due to previously belonging to old lady and needing loads done got for ok price. 4 years on coildn't afford it. Have totty garden but back on to burn and woodland so it makes do.
Leith used to be so down to earth but can see why your off,it's all expensive development and yuppified now.

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 01:38

are you arrogant and foolish,,etc???

MrsJohnCusack · 12/05/2007 01:52

I live in Christchurch, New Zealand
the view from the front of my house is of the Port Hills and it's beautiful. I live in the loop of a river with lots of parks etc. close by (it's suburban rather than rural though). Just over those hills are the most amazing views - here
the beach is 20 minutes away
my road is wide and full of pretty period houses with lovely gardens
it's 10 mins drive into the centre of the city

It's lovely. Until last September, I lived in Whitton, Twickenham, right on the A316 dual carriageway. I like my view now a whole lot better...

Twinmummyx2 · 12/05/2007 08:48

bloomin income support been put back now-not that i get any family allowance- but our rent is not far off the amount you said so we get rent rebate, very expensive to live here that is for sure!

I'm with Tabkat for Newcastle. I grew up there and it holds such a place in my heart. The city iself is fabulous, great architecture, lovely people, fabulous shops, excellent nightlife.
Surrounded by the goregous Northumbra countryside, beaches, hills

am homesick again now

Twinmummyx2 · 12/05/2007 09:07

My oldest sister lives in Dubai with her family. And then 2nd eldest sister lives in Sydney. She married an australian man and had 2 girls and loves it there. But whenver she comes back to visit she says how beautiful Jersey is.
Younger sister is getting married to a durham lad...i love that Ant and Dec accent!

rattleskuttle · 12/05/2007 12:39

twinmummyx2 - have emailed you, sorry, i missed thread in health. ds is doing well after a small setback when we spent the day in hospital. he's on two lots of ab's now, but is really looking good.

this thread is so interesting in an unstructured way. so many lovely places to live - i want them all (greedy, patting tummy emoticon)

gemmiegoatlegs - i have moved to other countries before with young children. we planned ahead and had some proceeds from a house sale to keep us going for about 6 months. i think you need either that or a definite job offer. i've always found it hard 'though moving to another place, but it's provided lots of interesting memories.

i still haven't found somewhere which seems truly "home" to me. possibly in a few years time we'll be ablt to think of moving. jersey's nice but it's no use staying somewhere that you can't afford.

I live just outside Lincoln. Nice small city, busy with tourists in the summer. Not as many cycle tracks, nice walks as I would like in the nearby countryside. But you can be in the country in 5mins which is nice.

Bad transport links to the rest of the country. City seems to have been a bit overrun with pubs since the uni opened, but more shops are opening now and I think the balance is getting better.

Not too far from the seaside. Schools are good, house prices are I think a little bit better than other areas.

Twinmummyx2 · 12/05/2007 19:23

Rattle--will check mails in a sec.xx
