i'd like to imagine moving somewhere. please tell me about where you live.
this is where i live:
jersey
mild british weather, fields and hedgerows, beautiful beaches, good schools, very low crime rate
high population density, bog standard house costs £400,000, reasonable house costs £550,000, 3 bed house rent is £1,500 per month, loaf of bread costs £1.20. main industry is international finance, no unemployment. bit of a problem with alcoholism and binge drinking. very conservative. expensive to leave (on a plane). mostly english people here with jersey families, portuguese and polish and some kenyans. language is english but use of french apparent, eg in road names.
can be about 10 years behind the times.

braided lives .....

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:32

Drinking oils the process, up to a point then grits them, yes??

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:34

NAO - another Piercy one! Read it yongs ago, but didn't stay with me like "Woman.."..gosh I miss those times...it was so clear and obvious!

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 00:35

drinking possibly just blocks things out or maybe brings them to the fore

NotanOtter · 12/05/2007 00:35

i had dreams for the future!

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:35

Both TnOgue. Both. you ok? Sure you are.

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 00:36

Oh God yes, I'm fine.

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:36

NAO - from "Woman..?"..that was totally about her dream/alternative life...

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:37

Good. Wanted to ask.

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 00:37

Thanks for asking

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 00:43

Hmm. It's not for us, where we live.

So we're moving on.

Turns out sooner rather that later.

I'm cool with that.

We like to be in the sticks. We like to walk, we like to garden, DH and DD1 are naturals with animals.

Bog standard house? Well, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that wasn't a flat around here.

And if you do, be prepared to stump up, even for ex-council.

No, thanks.

'And when I am, in my own country, my dwelling is in Suhle Skerry.'

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:44

In England, people don't ask, in the way Irish people do,yes?
A friend of mine who is VERY English was shocked at Irish 'noseness' on her first vist. "And how old are you? Have you any children?"..it was a real culture shock!

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:46

The captial of England in Scotland expat??

Tabkat · 12/05/2007 00:47

I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne and will move back there just as soon as our flat sells. I can't wait as I love being at home - lovely countryside and beaches on your doorstep, lots of shopping and nightlife, and we can trade our two bed flat for a nice big house.

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 00:49

I think my boss put it best, Mr.

'Edinburgh is an English city in Scotland.'

Fair enough.

But I wouldn't care if it were in England or some made up planet. What's the difference?

It's not for us and we're miserable here.

Onwards and upwards.

Wanna get ripped off? Go for it! Have fun.

Bye!

TnOgu · 12/05/2007 00:49

I think you have hit the nail on the head Pan.

twinsetandpearls · 12/05/2007 00:51

I love Edinburgh, but maybe that is because I am English. Could never afford to live there.

Come and live with us at the seaside, what more could you want than a town with a glitterball, bingo at every turn and pissed half dressed gangs staffering the town from 3pm every Saturday.

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 00:51

Whoever pays half a million for a flat really needs to take some of that money and spend the year travelling the world.

And then, maybe if they bothered to keep their eyes open for the ride, they'd twig how daft that is.

Maybe not.

So who cares?

Welcome to it! Knock yourself out.

Don't mind me. I'll only laugh at you in private.

FiveFingeredFiend · 12/05/2007 00:52

It's really nice.
Beach. Quaintish

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 00:52

I love the facade of Edinburgh.

It isn't enough.

I want the gold, not the glitter.

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:53

English are funny! I am Glaswegian by birth, Irish by descendants, and so whilst looking and sounding "English"...I'm not. No Anglo-Saxon in me at all!

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 00:53

This will offend some folks.

Okay.

Don't see why. It's just one person's sorry opinion.

I'm married to a man whose family has lived here since anyone knows when. My children are natives.

So?

BFD.

The world's a big place.

I hated it, growing up, how we always moved.

Now, I'm so thankful for the experience.

twinsetandpearls · 12/05/2007 00:54

FF are you callin my town quaint, I could think of lots of adjectives for my town but quaint isn't one of them!

MrMariella · 12/05/2007 00:54

expat - true, and very poetically put, if you don't mind me saying.

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 00:54

We're moving to the West Coast, Mr.

As my Dh's pal tells him, 'Mate, you're a West Coaster in an East Coaster's body.'

So off we go.
