Poor little Esme has suddenly gone downhill am worried this is the end... lost lots of weight and over past two days has not wanted to be on our laps or sleep on the bed where she ALWAYS sleeps, hiding away looking bloody miserable, when she does drink she's vomiting up froth. And this am she peed where she was sitting which she never does.

My mother had to have one of her cats put down a fortnight ago, am worried vet will take one look at her and say she's so ill...

i can sympathise, we lost a cat to kidney failure. it cost us a small fortune trying to prolong her life and keep her comfortable but in the end, it was congenital, nothing could be done.

thanks everyone really appreciate your comments. Ds has brought a friend home from school and he's so busy he hasn't asked after the cat yet!

Sad Sad

sweetmonkey · 03/05/2007 16:01

SO sorry Edam

edam · 03/05/2007 18:26

Thanks sweetmonkey and suedonim. Keep seeing evidence of her throughout the house, which is tough. You know, walk into the sitting room and there's the sofa she scratched, that sort of thing!

I'm so sorry edam. We lost a cat to kidney failure last year and she too went downhill extremely quickly. Please don't feel guilty. When a cat's kidneys fail they usually don't appear poorly until it's too late and there is no treatment.

It's a wretched, horrible feeling losing a family pet and I'm so sorry for you.

Sparkler1 · 03/05/2007 18:35

Edam - so for you. I had my darling cat put to sleep not so long ago also. Such a heart wrenching feeling.

edam · 03/05/2007 20:23

Thanks Sparkler and ShowOfHands. Dh is finally home so someone to share it with at last.

pussycatmomma · 03/05/2007 22:33

just wanted to say am so sorry you lost your poor cat......i have 3 fur babies and the thought of losing them just kills me, even though I know it is inevitable at some point in their little old lives.
I really feel for you and just wanted to post

expatinscotland · 03/05/2007 22:34

I'm so sorry, edam .

edam · 03/05/2007 23:12

Bless you, keep having to come back to this thread to say thanks to everyone for being so lovely. Have cried on dh's shoulder all night (and him on mine). You know, every time you turn round you catch sight of something the cat used to curl up in. Went to get a glass of water to take to bed and sobbed because the cat used to nick my water (drove me up the wall at the time but now...).

Oh God have to go to bed with no cat fighting me for the pillow.

Oh Edam I am so sorry for you -I know what you are going through and it is awful.

Hope you get some sleep tonight.

foxinsocks · 04/05/2007 10:07

hope you are feeling a bit better today.

suejonez · 04/05/2007 10:09

I'm so sorry Edam, I dread this happening to one of mine.

edam · 04/05/2007 13:15

Oh, bless you for coming back to the thread, that's so kind. I keep expecting people to think 'oh, it's only a cat'. But I haven't had to deal with this for 17 years - couldn't have a cat for years and years living in rented flats, then met dh who is allergic. Poor little Esme was the only cat he's never reacted to (actually think he did at first but fibbed to me about it because he really wanted a cat).

Do you think it would be a bit PFB applied to a cat if I rang the vet to check how she was at the end? I went into say goodbye but she didn't really know I was there so I left before it happened...

edam I think that would be fine. She was part of your family, animal or not. I'm really sorry to hear this.

edam · 04/05/2007 13:21

Thanks Mama (like the new name). Called them and they said she went very quickly, just a sniff of the anaesthetic. Poor thing was very ill. Just feel very guilty for not appreciating her more when we had her and not devoting enough time to her!

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/05/2007 13:37

Edam, so sorry for you. I had to have our cat put down last year and it was so upsetting, but I was with her at the end and it was very peaceful - she was even purring under the anaesthetic, which did help. Please don't feel guilty, you obviously did love her very much.

edam · 04/05/2007 13:41

Thanks MrsS. Even harder for dh, I think, she's the only pet he's ever had bar some stick insects as a child (he's asthmatic and horribly allergic to fur, feathers, everything really. Desensitised to Esme, though.).

Its amazing how much apart of the family animals become. I lost my golden retriever last year. He had developed cancer and even though the vet told us he had about 6 months to live he died after only 1.

I still am heartbroken to this day. You will notice little things, like not having to fight for the pillow, where they used to lay, their little mannerisms etc. In the end it will be quite comforting and wont hurt as much.

i still think about my dog every day and came home last week and the whole house smelt of him. Really made me feel like he was still around, which may be silly but to me i found happiness in it.

Id does get easier i promise

edam · 04/05/2007 18:07

I know SM, just haven't had to deal with it for nearly two decades since my childhood pets died. I still dream of my cats from those days occasionally, very sad when I wake up and realise they aren't here any more.
