Would you live on one of those set up Caravan sites, or do you already?

Dh has been telling me this morning about a lady he works with is looking at living on one of these sites with her husband as he wants to retire early.
It costs £1500 per year for water, electric and gas and the caravans themselves cost £30k.
They plan to sell their home and pocket the cash to live on.

I've seen the site before and it is lovely and the Caravans are huge.

Thinking about it, it seems quite a good idea, sell the house, put the money in an off shore account

But the thought of living in a Caravan, hmmmmmmm.
Not sure I could really do it.

Could you?

would depend a lot on where and how big the site is.

I've never tried staying in a caravan so I have no idea what it's like

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 12:47

This is ours . We don't live in it - we only go there weekends and holidays. It has gch, fridge/freezer/washing machine, double glazing. It cost us £45k and site fees (gas elec c/tax water rates) are £3k a year.

When we retire, we're going to live off the money from our house and live at the site (like a lot of people do). Can't wait!!

The only thing holding us back is not having Internet link and loosing mumsnet

SSSpooked · 30/04/2007 12:50

Is that really considered a caravan? I would have said a small cottage

People live in them in the US.

In some parts of Boulder, some static sites were quite upscale because house prices got really high.

I don't really care about appreciation, just affordability in the here and now and permanence of being to live there long-term and not being turfed out by landlords, tiny living space, etc.

We are so sick of living in flats we'd rather move abroad for good if our only option of getting anywhere permanent to live is a flat.

And that's looking increasingly likely.

SSSpooked · 30/04/2007 12:53

where would you move to expat?

ChippyMinton · 30/04/2007 12:53

MrsRecycle, can i be nosey? How long are you able to keep a caravan on a site? I have heard that when the caravan is over a certain age, you have to remove it and it is then virtually worthless, and you have to buy a new one and start again?

expatinscotland · 30/04/2007 12:55

Probably France, SS, as my folks are buying over there, as is my mother's sister. My mother is half-French.

We'll try to make it work here, but if not then we will really need to move on.

We can't do this anymore.

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 12:55

Hi essbee! Some of them do depreciate but we actually made £3k on one we had for 3 years. In terms of security - dds go off wandering to the clubhouse and everyone looks out for them. They even go swimming on their own. It's a great community everyone knows each other and is always willing to help out - especially when it looked like I was going into labour and was there on my own with the dds.

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 12:56

Chippy - we can keep it on their indefinitely. Used to be an age restriction of 12 years but thats been removed.

SparklyGothKat · 30/04/2007 13:03

Ooooooooooo MR Misdee stayed in one just like yours once. It was lovely. I have a caravan on a site, shared with my sister and mum and dad, its not as nice as yours though. I did try to get parents to part exchange ours for a fab one, but they were having none of it Ours gets very cold in winter.

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 13:15

Ours gets too hot - hence the fan in the front room.

Oh we do rent it out (to friends/family/mumsnet), so if anyone is interested....

ChippyMinton · 30/04/2007 13:20

Really? Where is the country is it, MrsR?

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 13:23

Its at Camber Sands, 5 miles from beautiful Rye and walking distance to the Blue Flag beach.

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 13:24

oops... on the Kent/East Sussex borders.

charliecat · 30/04/2007 13:26

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 13:47

MrsRecycle · 30/04/2007 13:48

im going to email you mrs R!

PavlovtheCat · 30/04/2007 14:27

Oh bloody hell I could sooooo do it. I have badgered my DP to do this for ages, but he just cannot bring himself to give up the life of material things just yet. We are only in our 20's 30's but the thought of living in a caravan in a bit of woodland that we own...perfection.
I have seen a few, and many many of them do not give any indications of being a caravan once you get in them, and some not even from the outside. They are just not permanent.
