....what would you do? Abstein or switch allegiance?

Not voting goes against everything I beleive in.

stand yourself?

DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 18:37

Would love to, however as my Dad is a local councillor I am well aware of the workload involved. I have a young child nad work 4 days a week so not really an option atm.

It is something I intend on doing in my twilight years!

spoil the ballot paper?

southeastastra · 13/04/2007 18:40

good for you! your dad isn't your local councillor i take it!

DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 18:42

No my Dad is one up in teesside. He's got a safe seat and there is still loads to be done.

Where I live it is very different.

Have spoiled my ballot paper before - is this better than not voting at all?

OP posts:
ShrinkingViolet · 13/04/2007 18:46

I do vote counting, and it amuses me to see what people write! Plus all the candidates for that particular ward get to have a look at each spoiled paper so that they all agree it's spoiled, so you could make your political point there in a very small way?

CharlieAndLolasMummy · 13/04/2007 18:47

it completely depends

NOTHING would make me vote tory, let alone UKIP etc.

Labour right now is not 100 miles from the tories.

Lib Dems are a bad joke.

SO

am not voting for that misogynistic prick galloway nor his opportunistic followers, though they are closest to my way of thinking.

would prob vote green, useless as they are, except that they are not standing locally

in this situation I am left with either a protest vote or no vote.

But if you don't vote, you are bascially voting for the winner.

so.

I think the responsible thing is to choose the least bad option of the two lcoal parties who are actually competing round here (lib and lab) much as both of them utterly feck me to high heaven.

DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 19:13

NOTHING would make me vote Tory. OUr are is currently LIb DEm controlled, the other candidate is BNP

OP posts:
CharlieAndLolasMummy · 13/04/2007 19:15

oh feck me

well in that situation my priorty would be to keep the BNP out, tbh

god i voted lib dem at the last election, i couldn't look at the ballot paper, i just mentally shut my eyes and did it. It had to be done. The lab candidate was a total wnaker

CharlieAndLolasMummy · 13/04/2007 19:16

christ where ARE you where this is happening?

beckybrastraps · 13/04/2007 19:22

If no-one from your party is standing, then it is highly unlikely that they will win. I have stood as a candidate in elections where I was certain not to win, just so my party would be on the ballot and I would have someone to vote for. There is of course a slight element of risk , but if you don't campaign, then you won't get in. Put your name forward. It's the democratic thing to do...

Fillyjonk · 13/04/2007 19:26

northerner, you will have to tell us what your party is

otherwise i shall be incandescent with curisity

TwoIfBySea · 13/04/2007 19:51

Weird how people say they won't vote Tory will vengence yet no one says it about Labour and they have been just as bad if not worse. (By that I mean at least the Tories were honest in being b*stards whereas Labour are more sneaky in pretending to do good while not.)

Out of interest, who is available for you to vote for? Have you had a look at their policies etc.? Who would you agree with more?

DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 19:52

I am labour through and through, although not as passionate as I once was for various reasons......

Dh will vote Tory, I simply can not. Do not BNP to get in, that leaves LIb DEms.

Aaargh...........

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 19:53

at labour being just as bad as Tories.

I DON@T THINK SO.

None of my candidates are female.

OK, think of some good ways to spoil my papaer rather than just voting for all candidates. Might as well give them a laugh

In the past I have spoiled my ballot paper where I found that I couldn't, in concience, vote for anyone standing

beckybrastraps · 13/04/2007 20:01

STAND.

Someone will win this election. Spoiling your ballot paper is no different to not voting. It is not voting. It does not in any way influence the outcome. It means nothing.

Grrr.

DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 20:03

I've only spolied once and did that by voting for all candidates.

Shall I tell a joke then?

OP posts:
beckybrastraps · 13/04/2007 20:03

Gosh. Sorry. This is one of my pet peeves...

Blandmum · 13/04/2007 20:04

I just couldn't bring myself to vote for any of the people standing.

I then phoned the local offices of the 'other' parties and asked them why they didn't get anyone to stand.

I couldn't have stood myself.

I have tacticaly voted in the past

DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 20:04

Well standing now is not an option - too close to elections.

Dh is totally opposed to my party, wonder how he would cope with red posters and rosettes around the house?!

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 13/04/2007 20:06

Becky I hate not voting too, spoing is crap, but candidates are not my party. Not an option for me to stand.

Catch 22.
