Mobile phones - could you live without yours?

I have moved to an area where there is no phone signal and I've realised that I now never even bother to use my phone when I'm out and about, whereas before it was an essential item for me.

Am going to get a PAYG phone for emergencies but otherwise won't bother now.

I mentioned this to a friend who visiably paled and said she couldn't live without her phone. Could you?

Erm I'd like to think I couldn't but the sad truth is I can't imagine life without it now.

My mum can't fathom why I'm so dependent on it and gets v cross when I look at it!!! She's only ever owned one mobile and lost that about 3 years ago and wasn't bothered - it's not as if she's ancient either early 40s - she just says it's not an important aspect of her life.

Whereas me on the otherhand, is sadly so accustomed to having one glued in their pocket that they feel naked if they leave the hosue without it.

I always tell myself that it's a necessity in case of any emergencies

onehackedoffmuma · 24/03/2007 21:37

sorry should have said -I'd like to think I COULD!!!!

southeastastra · 24/03/2007 21:38

yes

onehackedoffmuma · 24/03/2007 21:39

ooh and one other thing i'm not implying that older people shouldn't/don't like phones - i'm not ageist!!

MuffinMclay · 24/03/2007 21:39

Easily! I carry mine for emergencies, but go for weeks at a time without even turning the thing on.
We're in a rural area with no signal too...

MrsSpoon · 24/03/2007 21:39

Previously I could have quite easily of lived without mine but DH has nicked our home phone for business and we worked out that it was cheaper to get a mobile for me to phone my mum and friends so I couldn't live without it now.

Nikki76 · 24/03/2007 21:40

Nope! Am profoundly deaf and so texting is an absolute God send to me!! Can text all my hearing friends to arrange meet ups etc and don't feel shut off when DH out for the night! Long live Mobiles!!

Hulababy · 24/03/2007 21:40

I don't use mine a huge amlint, and DH even less, BUT wouldn't want to be without it. I like it with my when out and about, esp in the car and it is also my main contact number for when DD is at school.

Tinker · 24/03/2007 21:40

Yes. Only got one just over a year ago and regularly forget to charge it/take it with me anyway. When I do text people, it is mostly pointless stuff.

LilyLoo · 24/03/2007 21:40

No as a busy mum it's much easier to keep in touch with friends via text than making calls. Just wish my grandma would get one !

Nikki76 · 24/03/2007 21:40

I also have a very good excuse for having it on vibrate ALL the time

expatinscotland · 24/03/2007 21:41

Yes.

I don't have one.

I've never had one here.

If I need one, I borrow DH's.

Donbean · 24/03/2007 21:41

yes, easily.
Dont even look at it for days on end.
Its a big bugger, like telly remote. Ok for me.

I would be quite anxious without it now I think. When I first had one, I only used to turn it on to make a call. I missed a call from dh, heard his message later, telling me he felt unwell and could I go home. By the time I got home he was in intensive care
So there are many things I would give up first. I am reassured by the fact school can always get in touch with me, likewise any member of family. I don't though use it much to chat, just for essential short calls.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2007 21:43

My pal used to call it an electronic lead.

onehackedoffmuma · 24/03/2007 21:47

Oh Tinker - my post probably came out totally wrong! Nothing wrong with mum's age - I shouldn't even have mentioned it - I was trying to contrast how a mob is so important in my life whereas to mum she has never known any different - although I sometimes wished she had a bloody phone so I could get hold of her!!!!

Roskva70percentcocoa · 24/03/2007 21:52

I do live without mine, because it has a permanently flat battery. In fact, I used it so infrequently I can't find the charger and I think the last time I topped up the payg was about 18 months ago! On the rare occasions I have it with me, charged and switched on, I have been accused of not answering it, because I assume that someone else's phone is ringing .

Tinker · 24/03/2007 22:01

ohom - don't worry, I'm just amazed that I could, theoretically, have a daughter already posting on mn

NannyL · 24/03/2007 23:19

NO WAY

i even go to bed with it under my pillow or even in my bed with me

Roskva70percentcocoa · 25/03/2007 10:27

NannyL, I have to say, that gives a whole new definition to separation anxiety

Blackduck · 25/03/2007 10:31

Yes....I have two, (work and own)..work one comes out at work, own one lives at the bottom of a bag (much to all my friend's annoyance...)

Blondilocks · 25/03/2007 10:33

NO.

juuule · 25/03/2007 13:38

As I don't have one, the answer is yes.
