we are thinking about places to move to... just been watching Grand Designs and it featured Bournemouth.. would love to live by the sea but I have always associated it as being a place for OAPs... am I foolishly misinformed?

You might like southbourne.

I find Bournemouth culturally barren and quite racist/closed minded. There is a serous lack of anything going on and the clubs are dire.

Very nice beaches and the forest is incredible though :)

Thanks for the info. Yes I know, it's always tricky when you move out of somewhere you've lived in for a long time! I lived in the country till I was in my 20s but have been in London now for 25 years- can't believe it's been so long... I don't want to retire here though. Too expensive for a start.

Hey Kala, when you say culturally barren, is that just a lack of clubs? Probably not a prob for an older bod like myself but i assume there are theatres there or something?

KalaLaka · 19/10/2017 14:15

No, I mean arts and cultural events. There's one annual arts event which is great. That's it, really... some good dance shows at pavilion dance. The theatre is pretty awful, mainly for pantomimes. No real galleries apart from the uni one. No good musical events of any note. I'm really into the arts and Bournemouth disappoints greatly on this front!

Maybe stay for a week in November or something? Not the summer. See it in the winter and see how you feel.

Good morning,
I notice that this is an old thread but need to know the current situation in 2018, so am hoping to get some useful feedback.
We are considering moving to the East Howe area of Bournemouth, as a mixed race family (white/black Caribbean) and am wondering if this is a good idea.
I read in a previous thread (Oct 2017 only) that Bournemouth was found to be racist/closed minded.
We have always lived in a culturally diverse, busy, inner city area but would like to live in a slower paced area, with more natural sights around, such as sea and fields, so that we can enjoy the outdoors more than we currently do.
On my visits to Bournemouth, I rarely see a non-white person, so am concerned about whether we will be accepted there.
I look forward to any advice regarding this. Thank you.

supplyteacher53 My son is the only mixed blk/white carribean in his class with one Asian and one black the rest are white. I personally feel very looked down on having mixed kids and have had things said to me. My son has had racist remarks in the past. Twice I've been asked what's it like having those colour kids are they the same as white ones? Generally people are not racists just you come across racists.

supplyteacher53 · 09/07/2018 21:24

Thanks Jesay and I appreciate it greatly that you have responded to my concern and query. I haven't logged on for a while.
So sorry to hear these ignorant remarks. It is so infuriating that people even think this way in 2018. Are you happy to continue living there, if people behave in this way? I really want to move away from the inner city, and we have relatives in Bournemouth. However, having lived in a very multicultural area for many years, I am not used to blatant racism, so might struggle with these ignorant people. On the other hand, why aren't black and mixed race people allowed to live in the more peaceful, cleaner areas of England? We should be made to feel welcome wherever we live.
Nevertheless, feel immensely proud of all you are doing as a mother. We have four beautiful, funny, intelligent mixed race children, whom we love to the max and are so proud of. I hope your son doesn't let these remarks affect him adversely. How is he treated by the teachers? Do the children treat each other equally?
Again, thanks for responding.
