we are thinking about places to move to... just been watching Grand Designs and it featured Bournemouth.. would love to live by the sea but I have always associated it as being a place for OAPs... am I foolishly misinformed?

Hi, really pleased to have found this thread as we too are considering moving to Bournemouth. I have been a few times but don't know the area too well.

It sounds really lovely on the websites I have been on. I have searched on rightmove and was gobsmacked at the property prices, for £300k it seems you can buy a palace!

A few questions, I intend to become self employed in the next few years and hope to offer business counsultancy services to small to medium companies. Is there much industry in Bournemouth/surronding areas? I imagine there is as it seems quite a large town. And.... really embrassed to ask this but can I put you on the spot and ask where the rough areas are? . Also I have found loads of properties in Winton/Charminster, anyone know what these areas are like in terms of schools/shops/restaurants etc.

Bournemouth really does seem a lovely place to live, especially at this time of year

Charminster....sigh.....
Is Snoops still there & the Helvetia?????
Happy memories

sunnywong · 07/04/2007 15:10

ggirl, are you the Christchurch side of Ringwood? I grew up in Bransgore -

And are you telling me Bumbles is STILL open? I always remember it as the first place I heard James Brown's music.

And do you think you should stop mincing words and name and shame Kinson and Boscombe as the underprivileged areas?

nogoes · 07/04/2007 15:32

Really? Boscombe has such a posh ring to it

Oxygen · 07/04/2007 15:52

lol - Kinson was my first thought

I grew up in Boscombe, so less of the bashin please

sunnywong · 08/04/2007 09:18

my dad grew up in Pokesdown and my sister, and me for abrief time, lived in Boscome and in the early 90s it started getting rough as a&^sholes, let's not beat around the bush

Is The Academy still there? under 18s Wednesday night disco? Black Lace doing a live show, batwing jupers and blue mascar anyone?

Lullabunnyloo · 08/04/2007 10:22

Ahhhhhhhhh... sunnywong....the Academy ....such memories.....

Oxygen · 08/04/2007 10:23

Tis The Opera House now

Yeah, it is rough though Ironically though one of our quietest flats was in the biggest drug area going

whoopsfallenoveragain · 08/04/2007 10:35

Yes I have memories of the Acadamy/opera house too!
(like being deserted there on my 18th birthday )

Lullabunnyloo · 08/04/2007 10:55

oh whoops....what happened honey?

DelGirl · 08/04/2007 10:56

ahem, Boscombe is definitely on the up SW. It has a cafe nero and a costa coffee dontcha know . Seriously, it'll take time but it's a good place to buy. They're creating an artificial reef and an apartment block is going up and prices are starting at £390k for a 1 bed flat . The opera House is being done up too to host concerts etc.

but yeah, agree with Kinson . Turbary Park. Turlin Moor

DelGirl · 08/04/2007 10:58

I don't live there btw

Surfermum · 08/04/2007 10:58

Boscombe is changing near the beach and pier. We're getting an artificial reef put in and will have year-round surf . If I was minted I'd buy a top floor apartment overlooking the beach.

To answer your question though nogoes, there's a lot of industry round here. The three towns of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch are really one big conurbation.

I like Winton, there's lots of little local shops, Waitrose, Lidl, Wilkinsons, Woolies, Superdrug, Dot P's, a few restaurants. It's only 10 mins from the town centre too. It's quite studenty. Charminster is much the same, but fewer shopping shops, more internet cafes, restaurants and take aways. We had our last meet up there. Flamesparrow lives there so she'd know about schools, maybe.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 08/04/2007 11:01

I got very drunk and we were staying at my best friends friends flat but I didn't have a clue where it was! I lost her during the night (as you do in clubs) but my keys were at this flat and I'd run out of money. I managed to get a lift back to my parents village and walked a mile to my house couldn't wake my parents up to let me in so walked back to the village to phone them. was dying for a wee the whole time too but I'm not the sort of girl to wee just anywhere!

DelGirl · 08/04/2007 11:03

oh poor you Whoops , thats sounds awful. Had you had a good night up to that point? Where was your sister?

DelGirl · 08/04/2007 11:04

Surfer, I wonder how much the penthouses will go for? Have they started on it yet?

whoopsfallenoveragain · 08/04/2007 11:05

Didn't want to be seen out with my sister in those days
I think I'd had a good night up til then! Thank god for my other friend being there and being able to find him is all I can say

Oxygen · 08/04/2007 12:19

I did sod all research into schools...

Shanmiami · 15/10/2017 08:45

Guys hi, just looking in on this conversation. I live in london but am thinking of moving out and considered bournmouth. Can anyone suggest any nice parts which are quiet but where you could cycle to good shops or coffee places but then also from which you could easily get out into the countryside for walks etc? I live just off the end of a cul de sac going up to a park at the mo which is great.for me and the cats but i can be i Greenwich in 15 mins where there's lots happening so guess I'm looking for something similar!

Csd17 · 18/10/2017 18:57

There are some very deprived areas in Bournemouth, Boscombe for example. But there are also very deprived areas in London too. I lived in Bournemouth for a year, mainly because I wanted to live by the sea also. It was absolutely blissful to live within walking distance of the sea, but after living in London my whole life, it felt small and far removed from the buzz and culture of the capital.

There is a lot to love about Bournemouth and there are some v affluent places in the area, like Sandbanks. It’s a very healthy place to live with a lot of people focused on outdoor activity. I spent a lot of time walking my dogs and running when I lived there and could run for 14 miles along the sea.

Oooh you make me miss it. It does get v busy in summer but during the colder months, the beaches and the sea are all yours.

Csd17 · 18/10/2017 19:01

Oh wow I didn’t see how old this thread was. I lived in Westbourne which was a quiet little town just up from the centre of Bournemouth. It has a lovely coffee shop called Le Petit Prince. The countryside is in driving distance and the beach is walkable.
