Knitting patterns for babies/children

Can anyone recommend good books of knitting patterns, for babies and small children?

I have Debbie Bliss' 'Baby Knits' book and the patterns are mainly for baby girls, plus by her referring to her own brand of wool, it makes it quite difficult to substitute.

I have a two-year old boy, a five-year-old girl and expecting (probably) DS2. Would love to get some cosy baby knits ready for October and I love knitting (cardies, sweaters etc, rather than booties).

So if any of you can point me in the direction of some good books or websites it would be great.

Tinker will need second mortgage to create "Dumpling" for dd. Big Wool = Big Price.

bundle · 06/07/2004 18:52

it's about £6 a ball isn't it?

bundle · 06/07/2004 19:00

btw boudicca, i've sent those photocopies

Marina · 06/07/2004 19:03

Kangaroo and Rowan Up Country both have it for £6.50 a ball. Will have to check out the very limited range at Johnny Loulou's in Bluewater, unless some kind Mumsnetter working in the West End with an interest in these things was visiting the Oxford St habadashery department in her lunch hour anyway...

marina, just say the word - am in post-programme planning hiatus...and itching to get over to W1. will be next week now though..and going to glyndebourne on tuesday dahling, so back weds..

Marina · 06/07/2004 19:13

Could you check the price for me? That would be sooo kind. Mwah! It's going up RIGHT now according to Kangaroo (they're holding their current price til the 7th).
What are you seeing at Glyndebourne, and are you stopping with the outlaws? Quite a few of our lot are in the Chorus (again). If I give you a list of names will you hold up cards saying "Bring your library books back right now you cheeky "?

bundle · 06/07/2004 19:17

rofl about the library books! i've recently rediscovered the joys of libraries - we get children's videos out for £1 a week from our new one, and managed to get Purple Hibiscus before anyone else noticed it...

yes staying with outlaws, they're looking after dds, along with sil's nanny. said i was going to do starters (thinking lobster) so better get my thinking hat on. we'll drive down on tuesday, as it starts at 4pm.

will check wool and probably buy something myself. ho hum

boudicca · 06/07/2004 19:19

Many thanks Bundle

bundle · 06/07/2004 19:22

no problems, boudicca

Marina · 06/07/2004 19:23

No, I've never seen a Big Wool substitution, but it's probably worth looking into some American wool, as it's often surprisingly cheap. i'll have a trawl later....

I could never knit comfortably with aluminium needles, I like bamboo loads better. I have a set of Denise interchangeable circular needles that are very useful too. My absolute favourites, though, are well-made wooden needles like Brittany Birch. I've got some rosewood ones too that are lovely to knit with.

Marina, I love the idea of off-piste knitting

bundle · 12/07/2004 17:46

ok Marina. the bigwool in johnny lou lou's is £6.50 and £5.95 for the biggy print for some reason (how can it be cheaper???) and I bought yet ANOTHER children's knitting pattern book there on Sunday..aaghhhhhh. at least now there are virtually none left that I don't have .
I might be tempted for dumpling myself for dd2 (dd1 has developed an aversion for jumpers, gets v hot at the very thought) - but depends on how many balls it takes..

oh - and well done for your public service on the other thread, you are a cornerstone of the community. three cheers for marina!

bundle · 12/07/2004 17:59

boudicca, there are bamboo crochet hooks on that website! how exciting is that? how much do I need to get out more

Marina · 13/07/2004 13:04

Thanks so much Bundle, I might send my considerable custom Kangaroo's way then as there is no price differential and they are so nice down in Lewes. Much appreciated!
So how was Glyndebourne? Bet you're glad it wasn't last night...

tamum · 13/07/2004 13:07

Bundle, if it makes you feel any better I have just ordered beechwood cable needles from the US. Now just how ridiculous is that????

bundle · 13/07/2004 13:17

marina, it was lovely (rodelinda v boring though, what was handel on, I mean the music was v nice but the opera itself was a bit dirgey) esp the picnic and surroundings & we had the most gorgeous weather. saw david attenborough too, lovely man!

tamum beechwood???

Marina · 14/07/2004 10:35

Clearly NOT bundle. Someone got there first. Ha! Will just have to pay full price then. Was after Whoosh which I don't think would have been in the sale. Kangaroo are off-loading skiploads of Merry Berry, which looks pillar-box red on the site. Your description sounds much prettier.

bundle · 14/07/2004 10:48

merry berry definitely more winey. whoosh not there, dd1 will be disappointed but I felt a rush of blood to the head with the cut price offer

bundle · 14/07/2004 10:51

(btw there's a pattern in rowan junior, not babies, which looks suspiciously like dumpling, but has a rather stylish inset sleeve. only starts at age 4-5 though, so may just do dd1 one of those & dd2 a dumpling)

bundle · 18/07/2004 18:29

omg! bought a whole bag of big wool in the johnny lou lou's sale (£4-ish each)..plus whole swag bag of other stuff for future projects

boudicca · 18/07/2004 18:37

bamboo crochet hooks.....yum!
anyone got horse mad Dds/Dss...check out a site called Side Saddle Lady-I can't do links I'm sorry-try Googling....must admit I thought the title looked a bit suss!IYKWIM but what a find for my Dd3-looks like her Dgm will be busy!

tamum · 18/07/2004 18:47

Bundle, my apologies, they are birchwood cable and knitting needles. Still fabby though!

I've just been to my local wool shop sale which handily is about 20 metres away. Gulp.
