Do you ever worry that someone could find you in RL from your postings on here? Or are you more careful than that?

For example, I posted once (ages ago) about where we were going be at half term and vaguely worried about it at the time and wondered whether I should have done so.

I also posted some details about another event which could have led someone to my rl name and address (it's my old one so it's not relevant now)

I haven't tried but I wonder if I searched on a particular mumsnetter's name, would I be able to find something that would lead me to their rl details were I to want them? I wouldn't, of course as I'm not a weirdo or a stalker but this is the www and anyone else could.

So, should we all be careful what we reveal here? Or am I being over cautious?

And unquiet dad, now I REALLY want to know what you do!

I'm like webcrone. Been around for years andp osted on newsgroups long before mumsnet was a twinkle in the eyes of its creators. I'm not exactly in disguise here - I was prob one of the first few people to join and the idea of having an anon nickname never crossed my mind. And I've never bothered to change it.

Iota · 10/03/2007 12:11

WWW -I'm now having visions of someone lurking outside your holiday cottage and trailing you hundreds of miles back to your home

SHOSHAlee · 10/03/2007 12:17

Pretty easy to Identify, did pull some family things tho, but really dont care if anybody knows who I am, naybe I should as am aARny wife, but dont really think Al Quada will be coming after me or DH

squidette · 10/03/2007 12:18

This is a really interesting thread and i think keeping ourself safe on the internet is a thing we should all be aware of, as well as teaching to our children

One of the things that i find curious though is why people post about sensitve things under another nickname to protect their mumsnet identities? Its almost as though people have a internet 'reputation' to uphold. None of the other sites i use allow for multiple name change and thats quite freeing!

WanderingTrolley · 10/03/2007 12:18

I don't think I'm findable. At least, I hope not.

I haven't really posted anything I want kept to the close enclave that is mn (!) but I like the idea that I could.

Sometimes I am gripped by paranoia and worry about children's pics on profiles, in case perverts are roaming the site.

I also have a paranoia about posting "Bloody parent of mindee [rant]" and the convo underneath being "Bloody childminder!"

GRUMPYGIRL · 10/03/2007 12:25

I am VERY careful - obviously if someone knew me in RL they MAY realise who I am here and if I KNEW who they were here too I wouldnt worry - not keen on them "listening" to my conversations and not chipping in though.

If I am posting anything about location, say if anyone asked for a certain thing in my area. I would always do it under a less used name. I have 3 names I have used to any extent and the MN detectives could probably work out who they are from my excessive use of brackets and double exclamation marks...just thinking about the no spaces after a full stop comments on the married man thread! I am trying to stop the !! habit.

As we sometimes "have words" on here I prefer to be as anonymous as possible in case I "fall out" with a complete nutter.

MrsSchadenfreude · 10/03/2007 12:27

I don't post about my job as I have a very peculiar job title - I am the only one in the world, so if you googled my job title, you would come up with my RL name. A few people here do know what I do, and that's fine, but there is quite a lot of vitriol out there on a certain website which links to my job/my RL name. I wouldn't be happy if that got out.

I do also try not to post too much about my personal life, but DH and the DDs are so vexing sometimes, I do need to let off steam.

ledodgy · 10/03/2007 12:29

Some people's profiles are showing their full postcode I don't think this is a good idea at all. Criminals may find out your road, stalk it for a while see someone who matches your description/childrens pics on here, you say in a thread about going on holiday for a week in Easter and they rob your house. I know it's extreme but still possible so I advise people who have their full postcodes on their profile to get it removed. (shosha you have it on yours).

I am now v intrigued about UQD and MrsS.

I am now v convinced I lead a very dull life...

GRUMPYGIRL · 10/03/2007 12:44

I would never put my/or the childrens pictures on here and certainly NOT my postcode.

Having said that I am a bit paranoid in RL too...I shred everything which has our names on and frequently tell DH off if he tells anyone except close friends/family if we are going away (he once told a slightly dubious neighbour that another neighbour was away as he trusts everyone)

Sparkler1 · 10/03/2007 12:46

I'm not too worried about posting things on here. I've made some lovely friends with people in RL since joining Mumsnet so anything I post I'm sure they would get to read anyway if they wanted to.
I just don't post if I feel it's something I don't want to share with the rest of the world. There's always the name change facility if it's something really personal isn't there?

CAM · 10/03/2007 12:47

Mrs S are you the Queen

WideWebWitch · 10/03/2007 12:47

Me too WanderingTrolley!

Sparkler, no, it's not about being recognised irl it's about someone being able to find you irl if they wanted to and DIDN'T know you, i.e. if there was an axe murderer reading mumsnet.

OP posts:
WanderingTrolley · 10/03/2007 12:49

There's more than one queen in the world.

MrsS is the Pope.

UQD is a brand name. Like Heinz.

I am still very dull....

Sparkler1 · 10/03/2007 12:50

Ah I see!!
Some of the mumsnetters I know could be an axe murderer for all I know!

GRUMPYGIRL · 10/03/2007 12:57

Maybe Mrs S is David Beckhams wife!

99% of people on here are, I'm sure, fine but there are a couple of nutters LOL

boredwithlife · 10/03/2007 13:02

The thing I like about MN is anonymity. If ever I've commented on where I live or what car I drive etc, I change my name.

CAM · 10/03/2007 13:03

Mrs S are you the world's only female lighthouse keeper

CAM · 10/03/2007 13:04

wanderingtrolley, who else is called The Queen

MrsSchadenfreude · 10/03/2007 13:05

Am v amused by this! Job is not very exciting, it's just that I could be easlily identified. I am not Mrs Beckham, the Pope or The Queen. Sorry!

Lizzer · 10/03/2007 13:05

74% of axe murderers are illiterate
10% are in prison
13% are on holiday
3% have changed profession in the past month or are having a career break...

Yes Mrs S and UQD, surely are posh and becks!

MrsSchadenfreude · 10/03/2007 13:06

CAM - am glad to see you using a capital "T" for "The Queen".
