Has anyone else not given their children middle names?

I didn't and now I feel mean. It was hard enough deciding on a first name TBH.

I hated my middle name as a child. It doesn't bother me now. But its never used for anything is it?

You can have a nickname.

we weren't going to bother as could only think of the one name we liked but in the end we used my maiden name as ds's middle name...no point to them, i wouldn't worry

hatwoman · 04/03/2007 22:01

mine have my surname as their middle name. they've got a bit of Scots in them (not very much) and it's - apparently - a Scots thing to do. dh has a very Scottish name - his middle name is his granny's maiden name.

nally · 04/03/2007 22:01

none of our dc have middle names. unless there are a lot of names you like and can't decide on one particular one, i don't see the point in having them. no one uses your middle name anyway. our dc have 'tummy names' instead. if anyone asks if they have any other names they tell them what they were called when i was pregnant with them.

hatwoman · 04/03/2007 22:01

great minds...

charliecat · 04/03/2007 22:02

I dont have a middle naem neither do my dds. Does it matter, really?
Its just a pisstake at school when you confess to your and an extra name on forms.

TwoIfBySea · 04/03/2007 22:02

Dts have a middle name and then my old surname as it is very rare.

skirmish · 04/03/2007 22:03

never knew it was a scottish thing...am sure i must have some kind of scots ancestry somewhere too!

wotzsaname · 04/03/2007 22:03

thanks for a moment earlier today I felt rubbish about it, when they were telling me their frinds names.

Back to non-self doubt mode.

My two don't have middle names. Was hard enough to find one suitable name for each of them.

franke · 04/03/2007 22:05

I don't have a middle name either and it doesn't bother me.

TenaLady · 04/03/2007 22:05

we have two middle names, one I like and the other after his father! I am assured with three names he will get a place in the middlesex cricket team!

southeastastra · 04/03/2007 22:06

i don't my dad said our name was long enough

Linnet · 04/03/2007 22:09

I don't have a middle name and neither does my brother. My mums reason was that she never used her middle name so didn't see any point in us having one.

I have two dd's and neither of them have middle names either. When pregnant with dd1 I wanted her to have a middle name but in the end decided not to give her one. Dh hates his middle name and never uses it and commented the same as my mum that it never gets used so no point.

crystalpony · 04/03/2007 22:16

Our dd got her middle name in memory of my dh's childhood dog

maximummummy · 04/03/2007 22:24

no i have no middle name & neither do my kids 4 newest kid we found it hard to agree on a girls name so had 2 short ones but as luck would have it we had a boy !!

Chocolate1000 · 04/03/2007 22:25

I gave my daughter 2 middle names but one was after my Nan and the other is a name that is one of my favourites. I've got a hyphenated middle name which is a bit more unusual but it goes well with my first name. I didn't hyphenate my DD's name though as it's rare to find my name spelt correctly on official forms - hyphens seem beyond some folk and I didn't want the same hassle for my DD.

I deliberately gave my dc's middle names because I don't have one myself. I got fed up of people not believing me when I said I didn't have one, and assuming it must be something horrific that I didn't want to admit to!! I also felt I missed out, on all those 'so how did you get your middle name' conversations at school!!

luckylady74 · 04/03/2007 22:29

my 3 have a double barrelled surname as stubborness made me keep my maiden name - so i thought why make it even more complicated?

franca70 · 04/03/2007 22:30

I don't have a middle name. ds doesn't have a middle name. dd has a middle name purely becuase i wanted her to have the name of my grandmother.

wotzsaname · 05/03/2007 09:34

crystalpony I like that idea. I might suggest it to them. I had a lovely dog called Judy and a wounderful cat called Poppy. Both now in pet heaven.

They would actually work well with their first names.

Don't see the point so didn't just one short name here

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 05/03/2007 09:36

Its tradition in my family to not have a middle name but I felt so left out as a child and used to make up all sorts of fake pretentious middle names so that no-one would know... think Clementine, Constance, Henrietta and you'll get the general idea

As a result I have given my DD a middle name!

It is obvioulsy more common than I thought not to have a middle name. I shall tell dds that it is not unusual and to stop making a fuss. They have 2 lovely short names that fit onto name tags and the small spaces on forms very nicely thankyou.
