.....party bags?

I hate them. I hate making them up, I hate the needless expence. I hate the kids bringing more 'stuff' that they don't really want or need home.

Why do we feel that kids 'need' them? Isn't two hours of fun and games and some party food enough for them to have a nice time?

My dd just came home from a party with a bag. it contained:

A bag of crisps
3 small chocolates
A lollypop
A slice of cake
A straw filled with some sugary stuff
A pencil & a rubber

I have given her the crisps & small chocolates. The rest will either be given to her cousin who is allowed them, or thrown away.

Dh ate the cake

Blandmum · 03/03/2007 17:20

It isn't even what is in them re food issues and sweets if I am honest.

Why do they need them? why do we think they need them? Why do we give them out.....answer peer pressure, becau evryone else gives them out!

Ban them now sez I!

am a sour puss grumpy face too then!

I hate the little plastic bags with Barbie on them that lurk around the house that under no circumstances am I allowed to throw away because they are NEEDED apparently

I wait til they have gone to bed and bin the lot they never notice they have gone.....

Oh and I burst ballons when nobody is looking aswell (evil mummy!)

McDreamy · 03/03/2007 17:21

I hate them too but felt that DD has accepted them from lots of parties I was obliged to provide them at hers. I had children coming up to me making sure there were party bags at the end which was a bit of a shocker

McDreamy · 03/03/2007 17:22

Now I REALLY hate balloons!! I too am an evil balloon bursting mummy when no-one is looking

newlifenewname · 03/03/2007 17:23

I vote ban them to. A balloon is plenty and saves on tidying village hall effort.

Mercy · 03/03/2007 17:24

dd is at a party right now - I'm dreading the arguing that will ensue when ds realises he hasn't been to a party and therefore hasn't got a party bag and will want to share the contents but dd will say it's mine etc etc!

Yes, let's ban them! Just an added expense and hassle imo.

newlifenewname · 03/03/2007 17:24

That's the second bonus to balloons; they will hopefully pop on the way home - choose a route with prickly bushes, et voila!

BettySpaghetti · 03/03/2007 17:28

and while we're at it can we also ban the giving out of sweets at the end of the school day when its someones birthday please?

Its a nightmare. The last thing DD needs when shes tired and emotional at the end of a school day is a small bag of haribo etc. It also causes major tears as the whole classes siblings start wailing as they want some too.

ejt1764 · 03/03/2007 17:30

A new take on party bags - at ds's party I gave everyone an empty bag with their name on as they came in. As we played games and they won prizes, those went into the party bags. All got a slice of cake to add to the bag at the end.

Meant I didn't have to stuff the bl%$dy things, and everybody got a decent sized party bag ...

twojags · 03/03/2007 17:41

Took one of ours to see James & the Giant Peach with some of her friends instead of a party last year.
Gave every child a carton of drink and a packet of sweets to eat during the performance and put them in a little take away bag.
Everything eaten & drunk plus rubbish binned before we left the theatre

paulaplumpbottom · 03/03/2007 17:44

Party pooper

Blandmum · 03/03/2007 18:28

tassis · 03/03/2007 18:30

i like them

i like making them and ds adores getting them

i don't like that children expect them but i don't suppose that's their fault given that it tends to be how parties end.

Fonk · 03/03/2007 18:32

in my day....

yes

blah

ds is at a lentil weavers nursey (the kind that bans black, mb, oooh you'd love it) and I must say we compete for how recycle-y and eco we can do such things as kids parties. its great cos if you do can't be arsed and do nowt, it makes it look like you've tried really hard.

Blandmum · 03/03/2007 18:43

LOL!

I am very mich of the 'can't be arsed' class of mummy. I'd never cut it in Steiner circles

To my huge relief this year dd decided she would rather have the money than the party (she is 10).

I loath arranging parties of any sort.....enforced jolity isn't my thing. Like having kids round the house, and adult friends, but hate parties with a vengence.

Just don't see the point of party bags. Don't most kids have more than enough 'stuff' as it is?

Fonk · 03/03/2007 18:58

MB-

they encourage you to knit

they even buy the wool

you do have to knit gnomes and crap but

see above

and they are not very jolly

Nockney · 03/03/2007 19:01

I gave out books, last party. Worked very well.

My least favourite party bag yet was a themed one (DS1 got footballers, I suspect girl guests got princess-themed ones), with bag matching the three random pieces of plastic crap inside (badge, pencil holder, some other piece of plastic crap).

I mean, fgs, if you can't be bothered, don't bother! But don't bloody well buy filled party bags.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2007 19:06

Love 'em. Just done DSs parties. 8 yr olds got a hard backed note pad, glittery pencil, book, marbles and some chocolate. 6 yr olds got magnetic dry wipe boards, book, glittery pencil, marbles and chocolate. Wrapped them up in cheap paper. Poundland is a marvellous place, as are The Bookpeople!

No plastic crp and no crp sweets in mine, both of which I loathe. Cake was eaten at the party.
