at my dp's cinema that he works at, any toddler that isnt walking yet goes in free

katie37 · 25/06/2004 23:38

We took DS in the buggy to see Wind in the willows aged about 2 years, we stuffed him so full of chocolates and sweets to keep him quiet that he vomited everywhere. I am sure he was free.

nikcola · 26/06/2004 10:30

katie, i dont mind about paying i just didnt think that toddlers where alowed in cinemas , i will prberlly end up gagging her

when my kids were little you weren't allowed to take under 5s. Now it seems that anything goes

katie37 · 26/06/2004 11:53

nikcola, we are going to see SHREK 2 tomorrow so I will see what age youngest kids are there.

DS is now 9, and we didn't take him again after last time for a couple of yearsand without all the sweets etc.

Is it SHREK 2 that you wanted to go and see? if so has DD seen and enjoyed the 1st film? Are you taking other children as well? Will there be someone who can take DD out and still have the others looked after?

At our cinema they have booster seats in reception so they can see, or you could take in a car booster seat.

Angeliz · 26/06/2004 12:00

nikcola, we took dd aged 2 i think for the first time. We are gonna take her to see Shrek maybe tomorrow

DD LOVES it Have fun+

jac34 · 26/06/2004 12:06

Mine sure I took my DS's for the first time when they were 2.5. One sat in a trance looking at the screen, the other just fell a sleep sucking his dummy.
If it's a kids film, just take her and see how it goes.

jac34 · 26/06/2004 12:07

sorry thats,I'm sure I took.......

eddm · 26/06/2004 12:10

Cinema near where I used to live (Clapham Picture House) has a mums and babies showing on a Thursday morning so I took ds when he was about 12 weeks. Bizarre experience, sitting in a darkened auditorium with babies feeding, crying a little, nappy changing in the aisles... Worked quite well as they were so little they didn't really know what was going on and happy to just lie there. Don't think it would work now though! (Ds nearly 1).

nikcola · 26/06/2004 12:28

yeh it was shrek i wanted to take her to see, we would be going on our own so i could escape if shes naughty but she hates sitting sill maybee i will have to blackmail her with sweets!!!!

take a plastic bag and enjoy it!!!

hopefully she will be so taken with film she won't wriggle.

eddm that is a brill idea

WideWebWitch · 26/06/2004 13:08

I've been wondering about this too. We all really want to see Shrek 2 too and I wondering whether I could get away with taking 7mo dd in in a buggy and just taking her out if she got too fed up. Dp could stay with ds. It might be ok I think if we sat near the exit. Eddm, that sounds fab, wonder if any near us do it?

WideWebWitch · 26/06/2004 13:13

Sorry, Nikcola didn't answer your question! I'd give it a go if I were you. I think Shrek was the first time we took ds to the cinema, so he was about 4. But there's no reason not to go with a 2.5yo, you never know, she might like it and sit still! But there'll be lots of other littlies there and IME no-one gets upset when smaller children fidget or make a noise. I can't see the cinema having a problem with it.

Angeliz · 26/06/2004 13:26

I think the best thing is to also see if you can get an aisle seat incase the get itchy feet

BTW the plastic booster seats at the one we go to aren't very good so we just put her in a normal seat and have to hold it down the whole time!!!

musica · 26/06/2004 13:27

I would have thought that if it's an afternoon showing there would be no problem. Especially if you sit near the door. We took our 2 year old godson to see Thomas, and he loved it - sat motionless for the whole film! I also know of someone who took their newborn to see the first Lord of the Rings!

survivour · 26/06/2004 13:42

We took my baby when he was 19months, I too was worried, but now we do the movie for a pound on saturday mornings, he sits on my lap, so he goes in free. And we sit close to the exit just in case he starts crying, and walk in and out a few times, while his older brothers watch the movies in peace, give it a go........

nikcola · 26/06/2004 15:25

ok im going to take her on thursday ill let you no how i get on thanks girls

DS and I went to Odeon today to see Shrek 2. He is 2 and 3/4s and sat on my knee thro whole thing. He is a telly addict tho. We also went to see Finding Nemo which must have been a year ago? and he did same thing. It was £4 for both of us i.e. £8 all together. Just remembered we went to see Brother Bear at the cinema as well and I cried twice!

handlemecarefully · 26/06/2004 23:22

Ah confirmation that I have a difficult toddler. I would no more take my 23 month old to see a film than fly to the moon - I just wouldn't be able to get a doctor to prescribe me sufficient valium to see me through. I guess the rest of you must have far more compliant toddlers than me!

xoz · 26/06/2004 23:38

I actually rang UGC about this this morning...
we wanted to go see Shrek 2. They said any age can go. Kids go free up until 3 years old.
We went this afternoon and dd1 aged 3.5 loved it but cried all the way thru (she is a bit sensitive) dd2 (an energetic 21months) watched on and off, shouted a bit, wouldn't sit still, etc, but not so much that we got dirty looks from anyone around us. dh & I enjoyed it. Overall we thought it was okay and will do it again.

Linnet · 26/06/2004 23:50

I first took my dd to the cinema when she was 2 and she loved it I think we went to see Toy story 2. We had to pay for her though something to do with Health and Safety apparently. I thought that being under 5 she would have been free so was a bit annoyed about that, especially since my friend worked at the cinema and had failed to mention this.

funnily enough though we took her to the circus the same year and they also said that she had to pay because of Health and Safety. Has anyone else heard of this?

tammybear · 27/06/2004 00:01

ooo shrek 2 is great!! i think its better than the first. dd loves it

tallulah · 27/06/2004 16:16

Batters, the sad face was deliberate! Our cinema is horrendously expensive (£25 for 2 adults & 3 kids) & unfortunately the people here who take little children seem to think they are watching their own TVs (not saying any of you are like this btw but they are here).

It used to be ok when the decent films were all a 15 but since the introduction of 12A it seems that there are always little children in every showing. We tried going really late in the evening on a school night (obviously we wouldn't go early afternoon & expect no children) only to still have 1.5 hours of constant "what's he doing that for daddy?" in a loud voice, or running round & round at the back, as we had the last time we went..

You expect it in a kiddies film but if it has a more adult content (The Day After Tomorrow, for example) then I would expect parents not to take under 5s, unless they are the sort of kids who will just sit & watch.

I'd have been really embarrased had it been mine & taken them out, but I've noticed I was obviously a lot stricter than everyone else, as they don't seem to care that they are spoiling it for everyone else (then again, neither do the old people who chat all the way through, or the people with rustling bags....).
