suntan lotion for a one year old

I've recently bought a range of Boots Soltan suntan lotions for DH and myself and the Boots Baby range for DS. Today in the Daily Mail they have done a survey of about 20 different suntan lotions and the Boots Soltan range comes nearly bottom for both the adults and the childrens ranges. I'm therefore going to assume that the Baby range can't be much good either. The adults range scored 5 out of 10 and the childrens range scored just 4 out of 10.

Can anyone recommend a good suntan lotion for a 1 year old please?

Unfortunately we can only get away with P20 for a couple of days at a time as it plays havoc with dd's skin - and it's turned my best white bath towel flourescent yellow (dh swears blind he washes his hands after he's put it on her too)

OK, I'll commit myself to putting an order in. If anyone who wants stuff lets me know product codes etc by Friday 4th and I'll get it emailed on Saturday. I presume we want it sent airmail as oppose to surface so we can use it this summer ?!

Can I just say before you do that Proderm is by far and away the best suntan stuff, I use it on my allergic/ecezmatic 10 month old dd and it is causes no reaction at all.

It is a mousse which rubs in with no trouble, doesn't turn her white like a ghost and it lasts for 6 hours even if you go swimming. Waitrose sell it. I use factor 25 for dd and 15 for us.

They also make mousse for ecezma and nappy rash. have a look at this link

www, yes, P20 is the one-application-lasts-all-day one - put it on 90 mins before exposure and flap about naked until it dries. (NB have never tried it properly myself!) I think you can get it in Superdrug.

Not sure the Sunsense one is the same as P20 does have PABA and Sunsense doesn't - I think it will depend on whether there is an allergy factor. Also Sunsense "bonds" and P20 "binds"!

These are the 2 descriptions:

Sunsense Sport Gel 30 :

Easy to apply, non-greasy gel for sports people.
Cool and dry.
Provides SPF 30 protection even after 6 hours in the water giving water sports enthusiasts the protection they need in and out of the water.
Blocks UV-A and UV-B rays.
Screens infrared and visible light.
Preservative free (contains ethanol).
Does not contain PABA, PABA derivatives or lanolin to reduce the risk of sensitivity reactions to those people who are already sensitive to these ingredients.
SUNSENSE should be applied to clean, dry skin, 15 minutes before exposure to the sun. This allows the sunscreen to bond to the skin.

P20:

The active ingredient in P20 is PABA (p-aminobenzoic acid), which is a natural substance found in the human body, also known as vitamin H. When P20 is applied to the skin the p-aminobenzoic acid is absorbed and binds to the keratin, a process that takes 90 minutes. After this binding, P20 gives long-lasting and effective protection.
Amazingly P20 lets you tan! It gives high protection (SPF20) against the sun's "burning" UVB rays, but still lets through some UVA rays to allow you to tan. Result? A golden tan without "the burn". Remember the sun is at its strongest and should be avoided between 11am and 3pm.
P20 is non-greasy and fragrance-free once dry, so you no longer have to apply sticky sun preparations throughout the day! Because of this it is ideal for men with thinning hair as there is no grease or "shine" like normal sun preparations. Remember not to use any moistuiser etc, before using P20 as it will stop the product binding to the keratin of your skin.
To use, apply P20 each morning in an even layer to clean, dry skin, 90 minutes before sunbathing or swimming, paying particular attention to vulnerable areas such as the face, shoulders, shins and feet.
Because P20 is different, full directions must be read carefully before use.

re prickly heat - my dd had it quite bad - used lanacane medicated powder - kept her back dry and cleared it up in no time. I did check with the pharmacist first to make sure it was fine for babies.

Twink · 05/07/2003 21:38

Sorry, the week ran away without me. Could people that would like stuff either confirm here or email me directly so I can send an order on Monday

janh · 06/07/2003 13:17

Twink, sorry I missed Friday, have sent you a message via mumsnet, don't know if you'll get it before tomorrow though. I am interested in Sunsense Low Irritant SPF20 Matt and also 2 of the Soov products, prickly heat powder and Pinetarsol, which should add up a bit!

Twink · 06/07/2003 14:53

Don't panic Jan, I haven't got your message yet but I'll hang on for a day or so.

Twink · 07/07/2003 21:48

Will place the order tomorrow as I think all those who wanted stuff have now been in touch. I'm planning to email the order then get them to give a total price including p&p & insurance before I confirm payment details with them.

I'll email people directly with the details when I know them.

Just on the P20 thing, it says it protects from UVB but not UVA. Anyone know exactly what UVA is/does/means ?

Twink · 09/07/2003 13:05

OK order emailed last night, spoke to a very helpful lady in Aus this morning (I'd fallen out of bed just in time to ring before she finished for the day) and gave credit card details etc so hopefully the stuff should be here soon as I requested it be airmailed (and opted for insurance too).

I'll email you when the parcel arrives !

janh · 09/07/2003 13:13

Thank you very much, Twink! (Esp for the falling out of bed bit ! what time was that???)

florenceuk · 09/07/2003 14:48

Thanks Twink - hope you like the stuff as much as I do!

Twink · 04/08/2003 18:22

Order finally received !!

Have emailed you details

Has anyone used the green kids sun spray from boots ? Does it stain clothes ?

aloha · 12/08/2003 11:03

UVB rays are shorter, bounce off the skin, but cause burning and skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper, cause tanning, wrinkling and ageing of the skin, and also contributes towards skin cancer. Sunbed rays are mostly UVA. I would always use a sunblock that included UVB and UVA protection. Mind you, I am terrible at remembering it for ds - very bad mother .
THe green spray is pretty rubbish IMO as it less a spray than a squirt, so the coverage is poor, you still have to rub it in and yes, it does seem to mark clothes.

Chablis · 12/08/2003 11:16

NOt sure whether my one year old has 'prickly heat' or not - but it seems as if whatever suntan lotion we are using (the nursery slap in on in layers I think) is causing blocked pores or something as he now has really spotty arms (like little whiteheads)Not itchy - just unsightly really.
Any ideas folks, for getting rid of this and switching to something which won't cause this?

Jenie · 12/08/2003 15:31

My ds has something that sounds similar, only he got his from playing in a sandpit that for some reason (although the sand was out of the bag that day) was unclean. I think the parent / sandpit controller said that it was sand fleas.

You should ask other parents if their children have something similar.

I've put aqueus and calmoile cream on first then sun lotion after.

Ofcourse I could be wrong.
