suntan lotion for a one year old

I've recently bought a range of Boots Soltan suntan lotions for DH and myself and the Boots Baby range for DS. Today in the Daily Mail they have done a survey of about 20 different suntan lotions and the Boots Soltan range comes nearly bottom for both the adults and the childrens ranges. I'm therefore going to assume that the Baby range can't be much good either. The adults range scored 5 out of 10 and the childrens range scored just 4 out of 10.

Can anyone recommend a good suntan lotion for a 1 year old please?

I am also looking to buy suntan lotion for my DS. He is coming up one and we are going on holiday at the end of August. I have read (think in one of the baby mags) that Ambre Solaire, Nivea and Piz Buin are supposed to be good for both adults and children. I always use Piz Buin and have had no problems with it. I would ask someone in boots who knows about the sun lotions they should be able to advise you on whats best.Good luck.

Whatever you do don't buy Boots Soltan Orange sun cream. I bought both the spray on cream and the facial sunstick for my 7 month old and gave up using it after one day. The theory of the stuff is good; it is orange coloured so you know where you have applied it, but my god did it make a mess! The facial stick stuff wouldn't rub in and the spray stained my dd's clothes. in the end I bought Ambre Solaire for kids, which although it wasn't as high a factor as the Soltan, I found application much easier. Hope this has been some help to you.

We used the Soltan stuff on our ds last summer and it was fine, no burning, easy to put on and get off clothes etc. I read the Mail thing too, and this year we got Nivea ( which I think rated highly), but only because its a spray on and its on a half price deal at Superdrug!

Does anyone know any good brands for an 11 month old with eczema? We have tried Ambre Solaire for Kids, and Tesco's own brand for Kids. He came up with a horrendous sensitivity rash, and now has skin like a toad! Bit worrying really, as we have to weigh up sunburn against an itchy sore rash

leander · 06/06/2002 22:59

My Ds is really fair skinned and i use Ambre Solaire factor 60.He also has v sensitive skin and this doesn't bother him.

Maryz - I've not heard of the P20 range - where can you buy it?

mckenzie · 07/06/2002 20:48

thanks for all of the replys.
I bought some Nivea today but from Boots so I might try and take it get back and get it half price from Superdrug instead. Would also like to know though where I can get the P20.

Thanks for the info Maryz - both dd & I have very fair skin, and it sounds ideal.

I bought a Ambre Solaire for kids and its brill, I think I paid about £8 for it a Morrisons and there was a special on in Boots a few weeks ago.Ambre Solaire For Kids only £8.99 was £11.99. what ever you do don't buy suntan lotions from Boots, get them from Asda or Morrisons, they are so much cheaper and exactly the same

PRICKLY HEAT, yuck!, has anyone got any good sugestions about suntan lotions for prickly heat around the spf15 mark?

eidsvold · 29/06/2003 09:38

there is an aussie range called sunsense that you can buy via the net at

www.sunsense.co.uk - brilliant made by a company that specialises in skin products.

My brother was recommended to use it by a skin specialist after having to have skin cancers burnt off his face ( despite years of heavy zinc cream usage). The specialist said it did not cause any skin irritations etc and that it was the best in terms of protection. Comes in a roll on for children which is easy to apply.

Twink · 29/06/2003 10:26

Eidsvold, unfortunately you can't buy it from the site at the moment. I've just had an email from them saying they're in the process of changing their UK distributor and expect it to be available again next year !

However, they will sell direct to UK customers provided they're prepared to fork out for a minimum order of $100. Anyone fancy a business sideline ?

eidsvold · 29/06/2003 16:03

oh Twink what a pain....it really is very good stuff...

janh · 29/06/2003 17:30

How much is $100 in English?

janh · 29/06/2003 17:32

Forgot AOL has a currency converter...Twink, it's only £40 - how many bottles/roll-ons is that? I'd be up for a shared order.

Twink · 29/06/2003 18:27

This is the list they've sent me, P&P would be extra. The first number/letter combination is their order code, then bottle/tube size followed by price in AUS $.

I'd be happy to collate a shared order if between us we could reach the magic $100. Postage costs would be around $50 assuming the total order weighed 2kg, prices increase by $8 for every 500g after that.

I don't have any connection to this company, only heard of them via Mumsnet but if doing this is a problem for Carrie et al please tell me !

They also have loads of other things including 'prickly heat powder' which may be of interest.

janh · 29/06/2003 20:16

Is 50ml the same as 50g (from a postage point of view?)

I'll have another look at the website!

florenceuk · 29/06/2003 22:09

Twink, I'd be happy to order 3x toddler milk roll-on and 1 low irritant SPF20 200ml, if you are doing a joint order - have the toddler milk roll-on at the moment and it's great! Think this gets you about halfway to $100.

janh · 30/06/2003 10:36

The website description of the sport gel, factor 30, sounds a lot like P20 - does anybody know if it is the same? (Only stronger, obviously.)

WideWebWitch · 30/06/2003 10:46

Is the P20 stuff the one you put on and it works 90 minutes later but lasts all day? If so, I'd be interested in joining in with an order for this too.
