how often do you clean?

the house, that is....Really sad q but I would be interested. 10 years ago I lived in a student house that probably got cleaned at most once a month. Now I have a cleaner who does a rather cursory flick with a duster and runs the hoover round once a week. Just recently I've noticed myself noticing (iyswim) the muck and dust more. Half of me hates myself for caring. Half of me wonders if I'm a slob and if everyone else out there dusts every day. I know the answer is that there is no answer but I'm just interested in what other people do

No problem Nutcracker - It's just so true isn't it? It is extremely applicable to me as my 2 are SO messy, don't think I am strict enough TBH.

hatter · 20/06/2004 20:10

I kind of guessed that I'd get a few answers! Now I feel I should, as it were, come clean myself. I think xoz is probably nearest to me. Tidying is just constant constant constant - toys get thrown in a toy box at the end of the day, children's drawings get put in the recycling box (shhhh) and important letters and bank statements get put in a pile in the kitchen. Laundry is never-ending, but don't count that the same. Kitchen surfaces get done after every meal (I kind of don't count that as cleaning either); kitchen floor swept most days mopped 2-3 times a week. Hoovering once a week and dusting once a week (but not by me). Ocassionally the hoover will come out an extra time, but not very often, and it certainly only makes it upstairs once a week (and would be less if it were down to me). Bathroom and toilet once a week. It's interesting how people's perceptions are different - some people here have said they hoover every day and do the toilet everyday but hardly ever dust. But for me it's the dust I'm noticing. Has anyone else noticed subtle changes in their own standards? If the amount of cleaning I do / the amount of muck I notice continues to increase at the same rate as it has in the last ten years then by the time I have grandchildren I'll be anal cleaner from hell who won't let them in the house. I find this deeply disturbing. When did I start caring?

I'm afraid that I'm with Lou on the 'domestic slut' front. House is tidy rather than clean. I keep telling dh that he knew this about me when he married me

CP3 · 20/06/2004 20:20

Hoover and mop every other day.
Bathrooms once a week.
Washing every day.
Change bedding once a week.
Bleach down loos everyday.
Dusting/polish once a week.
Tidying up toys every min of day.

Started back full time and finding it hard to do it all now so may have to get a once a week blitz now, or could pay the teenager to do it.

janthepan · 20/06/2004 20:31

V interesting thread. My mum was a "blitz" once in a blue moon, and I was determined to be more organised and had days ear-marked to do things As my children are now all at school it is easier (I work 2days pweek)in that I've perfected the quick 10min blast which I do when I'm at home, perhaps 1x per week when I'm in the mood, but to be honest I'd rather surf/watch QVC (terrible addiction but I love it!).Just call me lazy slob!!

fee77 · 20/06/2004 20:35

i think i am a born again cleaner - since having my DD i am forever weilding a feather duster!! I even set myself a rota so i do a couple of rooms each day. I have to say it is good because i don't seem to spend my weekends cleaning anymore, and if some one is coming round i don't go in to a blind panic!!

lou33 · 20/06/2004 20:45

Chinchilla, is it a Colchester thing you think ?

curlysue · 21/06/2004 15:18

God you lot clean a lot!!

I have a system for everything! Split up the jobs and write lists to schedule them in so everything gets done once a fortnight!

I am very tidy but only clean what you can see. Top tip: Never move anything!

I hoover the living room more often and wipe surfaces all the time and clean the kitchen floor once a week.

Another top tip - get rid of any males! It's just me and my two dds so it stays clean anyway!

I do iron as I go along so it never builds up into a big job and you can do that in front of the telly anyway so that's OK!

Change bedding on a rota basis as well. Everything by system in my house! Keeps me same anyway!

As soon as I can work more and earn more I'll be getting that cleaner back though!!

curlysue · 21/06/2004 15:19

Sorry that should be sane not same!

I'm new and it's nerve-wracking!

Beccarollover · 21/06/2004 15:41

Curlysue - I love Rotas! Do you have yours on our PC? Fancy sending me a copy!?

Fio2 · 21/06/2004 15:43

as little as possible, I am a domestic slut

sponge · 21/06/2004 15:54

I have a cleaner who comes once a week and that's pretty much it.
I keep the kitchen surfaces clean and do the loos when necessary. I might hoover the living room in between cleaner visits if someone is coming round.
I never dust.
I do tidy but this mostly involves putting things in piles and shoving them in cupboards. About once a year I clear out the cupboards and throw everyhting away.
I have a similar filing system at work.

dogwalker · 21/06/2004 16:09

God you lot.

I clean really as and when necessary which is not really often enough - BUT - I hate to see those crumbs on the kitchen floor near the cupboards so sweep kitchen floor every 2 days, then hoover up what I have swept and hoover hall and living room (v quickly) at same time. Worktops get a quick wipe down after tea. Toilets/bathrooms get done once a week, sometimes need more often though, you see I have two sons and a hubby. Dust main areas once a fortnight. Ironing gets done as and when needed. Washing every day. It's the little bits and pieces and piles of paper that get me down, if they're put away everything looks so much tidier. However, i don't often move furniture or dust skirting boards etc, this is probably done once every two or three years. Beds done every two-three weeks. Hate changing the boys beds as they both have cabin beds and have to climb up there, move teddies etc. I think I'm pretty normal if there is such a thing, not too obsessed but not a complete slut either.

curlysue · 21/06/2004 16:27

Sorry Beccarollover - don't keep them on the PC! I prefer little lists kept to hand in the kitchen for constant updating and amending!!

I even make a list every week of the teas I plan and then write my shopping list accordingly - just can't see how you can shop properly otherwise!!

Yes, I know I'm sad. Everyone laughs at me but I am rarely stressed and it all runs like clockwork here!!!

busybee123 · 21/06/2004 16:30

eh?!?!?!? cleaning?!?!?! stop swearing at me!!!! I barely have time to get dressed at the moment let alone do cleaning!!!

mieow · 21/06/2004 16:30

WE hover every day, and clean the kitchen about 3 times a day, toliets and bathroom get cleaned once a week, shower room gets cleaned once a week. I dust about twice a week, floors mopped about 3 times a week. Beds get made every day (by me) and cooker get a good clean about 3 times a week (by DH)
Sofa covers come off about once a month and get washed.
And about once a month we spend a sunday moving everytime and cleaning everything and mopping and hovering.

mieow · 21/06/2004 16:31

oh and I do washing everyday but refuse to iron (do it in the mornings when it needed)

sponge · 21/06/2004 16:34

Mieow, I love the idea of you and your family having a daily hover. I see you all slowly levitating above the dust.........

mieow · 21/06/2004 16:49

lol, really must proof read..... of course I meant hoover!!

curlysue · 21/06/2004 17:08

I've cleaned the inside of my oven about once in four years!!! No one sees it so who cares?! Of course the hob is usually pretty clean - I am so clean and tidy on the surface but open a cupboard or move anything and you'd find out what a slut I really am! Life's too short for too much cleaning surely?!!

I'd rather be on here chatting!

Ixel · 21/06/2004 17:20

I clean well if my Mum is coming. And once after a mner had been around and I was very ashamed . But my kitchen is very clean. Try to buy non iron clothes as much as possible!

wayward · 21/06/2004 17:22

LOL C-L-E-A-N Is that something I should know about?

noddy5 · 21/06/2004 17:30

most days

CountessDracula · 21/06/2004 17:31

Have a cleaner twice a week, but I mop the floor every day as we have a dog and I want to make sure it's clean for dd.

Errrr that's it!
