If you are on AOL please read this and bump for the next person thats being ripped off.

If you know people of AOL please send this info to them then bump for the next person thats being ripped off.

Check your address book - send this info to any AOL addys - then bump for the next person.

I found out last night that I am being ripped off by AOL. I am paying £17.99 for product that many other users are paying £9.99 for.

They are basically advertising this package for £14.99 at the moment with a free wireless router. There are rumours that you can actually get it for £9.99 if you don't take the wireless router - just google 'AOL Silver & 9.99'. The news is worse if you are paying for GOLD because apparently this doesn't exist any more (since 15th Jan)- these users have apparently been downgraded to silver (which is now 2Mb anyway) but still paying for GOLD.

My MIL queried this by using their live help IM talk thing. She was offered £14.99. She told them she wanted the £9.99 deal. The operator didn't know anything about that . She asked to put thru to supervisor and she was suddenly offered £9.99. According to the geeky forums many users are getting this just by saying they want the same as what their 'friend' is getting. My SIL is also now paying £9.99.

I don't know whether there is a similar situation with the Platinum (which is advertised at £29.99 for 8Mb with free router).

There is one Catch. In order to take the £9.99 yo have to sign up to a new 12m contract. I have to admit I havn't done this yet as the Sky package is miles cheaper than either of these and I don't want to tie in for 12m before I have decided whether to change. I am currently looking for feedback on Sky broadband...

Thanks for this. I am currently on gold and am going to see what I can do about it. I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

SexyMadScientist · 16/02/2007 16:04

Do you get it easily Tegan? Or did you have to fight?

SexyMadScientist · 16/02/2007 16:06

Double check that you are actually on Gold - I know someone that thought they were on Gold but have been on Platinum for months - they seem to have been automatically upgraded as they have no knowledge of changing it. Just worth checking - as they almost DOWNgraded themselves onto the 9.99 silver thing.

I litterally went on the live chat and asked why I was paying £17.99 a month and could I have it for £9.99 and the lady changed it immediately , no hassle at all.

TotalDream · 16/02/2007 16:27

Thank you i have emailed my aunty about this

sammac · 16/02/2007 16:30

Went onto live chat and got it no problem. So am paying 9.99 a month instead of 24.99 a month. That's £180 a year!!!!! No problems with it although it took about 20 mins, which would have been a good timw if I had phoned!

SMS a great big kiss to you!!!

Now can you come out and sort the rest of my life!!!

Quootiepie · 16/02/2007 16:43

Little buggers, I think I am paying 27.99 for silver, have to check...

SexyMadScientist · 16/02/2007 17:42

I think 27.99 is gold or platinum.

There shoould be 2 green arrows in teh tray (near hte clock) - 1 up and 1 down. If you hover over these the bottom number gives the download speed.

SILVER should be about 1000 (or 2000 if you have already had hte speed upgrade).

I think Gold was 2000.

I think Platinum should be 4000 (upgrading to 8000).

If you do the live help and ask what package you are on they should tell you without you having to go any further at this stage.

Thank you. Am currently waiting for their response.

Marscentio · 16/02/2007 18:10

Done and dusted! No fuss. Called my sister who is in the process of doing the same. Just waiting on other sister to call.

THANK YOU!

sammac · 16/02/2007 18:32

Also told friend next door and she is in the process of changing right now! Interestingly she was asked where she saw the 9.99 deal as it was 14.99. Luckily I had seen carphone warehouse advertising it- just in case anyone else is asked have answer ready! hopefully she's got it at the 9.99 price.

All the forums are just saying - you tell them that your fiend rang earlier....

I have to say that this behaviour from AOL has made me seeth....I am seriously considering Sky broadband

Marscentio · 16/02/2007 18:37

I went into live talk and clicked payment plan. Then I posted "I have been told that silver broadband is being offered at £9.99 and I am paying £17.99" A lovely chap called Syed Ahmed responded and after asking for my security details said he would need to consult with his supervisor. Then he came back and said he would change it now. Then he confirmed I was happy to have the 12 month contract. All done. Result No questions asked.

FrannyandZooey · 16/02/2007 18:40

"If you only read 1 thread today make it this one..."

I read the title and clicked on this, honestly thinking it was going to be something of real deep importance to all MNers

it turns out to be about the possibility of some people getting their internet service cheaper

again

Marscentio · 16/02/2007 18:41

Well Franny my gorgeous darling.... it does say AOL lol!

Just as an aside. There will be no need to recycle. I'm a very happy bunny. Thank you. Currently converting all my friends. Mwah!!!!!!!!!

SexyMadScientist · 16/02/2007 18:42

The title actually says if you know anyone on AOL make this the only thread you read...Sorry for misleading....or should that be sorry for AOL mislieading us????

I just like the face too much

May have to do it again just for the hell of it

ImaWurzel · 16/02/2007 18:49

We're trying to go to orange cos it's only £5 p/mth if you have an orange contract with them. We were gold in december but downgraded to silver cos it didn't seem any different then when DH tried to cancel and get mac code from them for orange they said we have been tied in for another 12 months. Dh went mad at them cos he didn't sign anything or agree to that! So he's writing a letter to complain to the head office, not sure how far that will get him.

ImaWurzel · 16/02/2007 18:49

Yaeh it is a groovy face

ImaWurzel · 16/02/2007 18:50

yeah even.

SexyMadScientist · 16/02/2007 18:51

DDDOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN'TTTTTTTTTTT go to orange whatever you do....they get awful reviews across the board.

OP posts:
SexyMadScientist · 16/02/2007 19:00

Well - looks like Sky arn't going to be in my area for 12m - so I battle on with broadband.

OP posts:
sammac · 16/02/2007 19:12

Next door eventually got the 9.99 deal BUT only after they cut her off 3 times and she ended up having to call them. Persistence won!

Marscentio · 16/02/2007 19:14

My DSis has just been cut off. She's not happy. "Doreen" just left the session after telling her that the package was £14.99 and it wasn't being offered for £9.99. My DSis is on the warpath.... Doreen I say..... be afraid. Be very afraid..........
