Peter Jones for the escalator?

SoupDragon · 20/06/2002 11:58

Anagram = architect

Marina · 20/06/2002 12:27

Cam, I thought Peter Jones for the escalator too. After all, where else IS there in SW3?

SoupDragon · 20/06/2002 12:36

According to my sources, Britain's first escalator opened in Earls court in October 1911 ...?

SoupDragon · 20/06/2002 12:40

And another says Harrods (SW1) in 1878

Confused

Fionn · 20/06/2002 12:41

Yes, Malaysia for Satay. There is somewhere else in SW3!
Oh, another question. I thought everyone knew this (well every woman), but people on my team didn't, but it must be that I've watched so many historical documentaries it's now indelible on my brain: In which decade did British women get the vote?

OP posts:
Fionn · 20/06/2002 12:46

OK Soupdragon - the answer we were given was Harrods, but I've just checked their site and the address is SW1, so the queston master got it wrong - apologies for confusing everyone! But part of the Brompton Road is SW3 isn't it?
As for 1878 and 1911, interesting. Haven't got time to research it at the moment though!

I'd always assumed it was the 20th century or was it the tail end of the 19th...?

I think the 1911 one may have been the first escalator in a tube station , although even that seems to be contradictory!

bells2 · 20/06/2002 14:03

1918 but only for women over 30. Around 25 years later than New Zealand as a matter of interest.

Xanthe · 20/06/2002 16:33

I think women under 30 didn't get the vote until about 1928 - how shocking this seems nowadays.

SofiaAmes · 20/06/2002 22:59

Women in switzerland only got the vote in the 70's.

CAM · 22/06/2002 10:40

I think women got the vote in 1928.

CAM · 22/06/2002 10:42

Also I've always thought of Harrods as SW7.

Fionn · 22/06/2002 12:50

Yes, answer is 1918, but as bells2 says, only women over 30, and I think only property owners. I'm amazed Switzerland was so late. When was the US - do you know SofiaAmes?

OP posts:
SofiaAmes · 22/06/2002 14:50

I don't know, but I think it was around the same time as the uk...I don't think it was limited to property owners or over 30's, but I do think it was limited to white people.

CAM · 22/06/2002 18:33

In Switzerland, I think women have actually voted not have the vote until recently, if you understand me.
