Anyone else's son have pink and purple as their favourite colours?

If you ask my 3 year old son what his favourite colour is, it's always pink and purple. We went to buy new sippy cups yesterday and he chose - bright pink. Ask him what he wants for his birthday, pink cakes and purple pizza.

I don't want to put stereotypical thoughts into his head so I just let him crack on with it but am wondering at what point his love of pink will get difficult for him e.g. with other boys as preschool etc or don't they care until much later? So far we've managed to avoid pink clothes but I can see his birthday party ending in tears as I've bought pink ballerina aprons for the girls and blue dinosaur aprons for the boys.

Anyone else have this?

My Ds who is three adores pink - has an absolute breakdown if he doesn't get his juice in a pink cup at tea time.

In GAP last week he pulled a pink cardigan off the shelf, put it on and paraded around the shop. The staff thought he was hysterical.

We're planning on decorating his bedroom and yes you've guessed it - he wants pink walls.

He does have an older sister (DD6) so I guess he thinks its grown up - whatever his big sister does or likes is cool in his eyes.

colditz · 05/02/2007 19:40

Ds1's favorite colour was pink until he started talking to the other children at playschool, now he says it is purple.

funnypeculiar · 05/02/2007 19:41

ds is JUST growing out of her 'pink phase' (nearly 3) - always chose pink plates, cups etc - we hunted for clothes that were pink but not TOO girly with no success. He's been at nursery for 2 terms, and has now started saying he wants a 'boys one' - ie blue ...
He'll figure it out on his own all too soon - enjoy his indiviuality while it lasts!

IntergalacticWalrus · 05/02/2007 19:44

DS1 (2) has a pink cup and loves his pink purse.

NannyL · 05/02/2007 20:18

My 1st charges favourite colour was pink, until he was about 4! BTW at that age none of them seemed to care!

dont worry about it! Pink was my favourite colour too!

NannyL · 05/02/2007 20:19

my 17 month old charge LOVES his pink buggy too!

My DS1 is 3 and sometimes pink is his favourite. At the moment it's green.

He has an older sister of 5 and a younger one of 2. They like dressing up as princesses and fairies and DS1 joins in. He actually looks pretty good in the pale yellow Snow White dress! No doubt he'll stop doing it when he's more aware of stereotypes and peer pressure.

Lots of people ask me what my DH thinks of it and are quite surprised when I say he couldn't care less.

Marina · 05/02/2007 20:25

Ds liked pink and purple loads at this age, and still retains a quiet affection for them. It helps that dh has a number of pink-ish work shirts, courtesy of the Boden sale!
The French are not afraid to make boys clothes in strawberry pink, plum, aubergine...although maybe not an entire outfit

we are in the pink phase right now too - ds2 is 3 and adores it - pink girlie cups, plates, anything. he also loves dolls and dora. we go with the flow at our house and I've let him have some pink socks with dora/barbie etc on and a dora umbrella but draw the line at tshirts/trousers much to his disappointment. he knows it's a girl thing and says things like 'when I'm a girl, I'll ....' but as his older brother who's 4 already thinks it's totally naff and girlie, I'm guessing ds2 will soon grow out of it.
anyhow, I hate pink myself and the idea that it's a 'girl' thing. nothing worse than very butch looking baby girls in pink frills . I think ds2 is going to be a david Beckham type when he grows up

KTeePee · 05/02/2007 20:26

V common with boys of this age - ds1 stopped liking pink about halfway through Reception - just after I'd bought him a lovely pink striped shirt for his school disco

Chipstick · 05/02/2007 21:59

Following on from my earlier post ds regularly comes down dressed head to toe as Cinderella, with tiara, bag etc its so weird as hes the double of his big sister at that age just without the hair. He's also had glitter nail varnish on his big toe - didn't want to be left out when I was doing dd feet.

I think its so sweet as does my husband, we'll love it when he's older, 6ft 5 (like his dad) and all macho to remind him - I've got some great photos!

FrayedKnot · 05/02/2007 22:04

If i ask DS what his favourite colour is, he says pink, and he means bright barbie pink.

I am sure it won;t be long before some kid says "eeuuurgh, pink is for girls" and he goes off it, so I'm letting him enjoy it while he can...

I think it's something to do with bright colours in general because I let him choose something to waer for the first time the other day, in H&M, asked him whcih hooded top he would like (several different colours - all striped - mainly blues & greens etc) and he chose bright orange and brown...later he told me it was so he look like a tiger.

rocketqueen · 05/02/2007 22:04

My 6 year old son is very much a jack the lad, he's rough and ready, scruffy and completely unconcerned with anything....but his favourite colour is pink and everytime we go shopping for clothes he picks out the boys pink t-shirts.

purpleturtle · 05/02/2007 22:05

Ds1 is 4 and insists on using the pink cup and the pink plate - so much so that I often give them to him at lunchtime to avoid an argument when hie sister's home at tea time (then they're safely in the dishwasher!).

As an earlier poster commented, big sisters can be quite influential. We don't have any pink clothes for him though, and I don't think he's currently claiming pink as his favourite colour, so maybe the cup and plate are simply a power-trip on his part.

twelveyeargap · 05/02/2007 22:05

My friend's son's favourite colour was pink up until he was about 10.

Ladymuck · 05/02/2007 22:05

DS2 3.9 is still in his pink phase - he has a Dora themed bedroom and his Christmas present were Dora's magical castle and Barbie's Hot Tub Party bus.

Ds1 didn't go through the same phase, or is he did it was fleetingly.

Ds2 starts reception in September which will be interesting as he is going to a boys school.

MamaCampbellBlack · 05/02/2007 22:05

my DS wants his bedroom painting pink

Dottydot · 05/02/2007 22:08

Oh yes. ds1 went through a massive 'pink' phase - he had a Barbie themed 3rd birthday party - Barbie cake, paper plates, cups, pink balloons everywhere. And we have the photos to embarrass him with later. He had pink pyjamas, liked to have pink nail varnish on his toes, had pink socks and vests (the rule was he could wear pink at home or under things!!).

Growing up with 2 Mummies, we were kind of worried we'd had some bizarre influence (not that dp or I like pink!), but at the grand old age of just 5, his favourite colours now are 'army green and black'. Everything's bloody army and soldiers oriented and utterly dull - in terms of clothes, pictures he draws, etc.

So I'd enjoy it while it lasts because it honestly won't last more than a year or so - the minute they hit primary school their friends influence them far more than anything or anyone else and the boys like 'boy' things and the girls like 'girl' things. (Mind you, he still loves his pink duvet set - but we're not allowed to talk about it!!!)

pinkchampagne · 05/02/2007 22:09

My Ds used to say that pink was his favourite colour

hunkermunker · 05/02/2007 22:09

DS1 wore pink wellies round Primark the other day - he wasn't emphatic enough about wanting wellies in general, so I didn't get them for him, but I would've done had he wanted them. He liked them when they were on though - kept saying "pink!" excitedly.

mummymagic · 05/02/2007 22:29

Pink is just a colour!

I remember giving the children in my Year 7 English class (11/12yr olds) a choice between pink and white card to make a card for something and the vast majority of the boys chose pink... This was in a v rough secondary school in Tottenham.

Ashamed that I was surprised (although hid it well of course...)

calebsmummy · 05/02/2007 22:35

DS2 is 4 and his favourite colour as been pink for quite a while. His best friend (next door and at nursery) tells him it's girly, but he doesn't, good for him I say! He is very much a boy in all ways, rockets, castles, superheroes etc all feature in his daily play and he doesn't have an older sister or any girl cousins to influence him, he has an older brother of 13 and a younger brother of 2, plus 4 boy cousins around his age. So actually it's quite nice for me, being in an all male household to have a bit of pinkness!!!

He has a pink cup and a pink spoon, but doesn't want pink clothes. I'm not bothered about his choice of favourite colour at all, it's just a colour!

motherbeing · 05/02/2007 22:35

my dad needed a buggy in a hurry and argos didn't have much stock, so he bought a neon pink one for communal grandchildren's use. So I guess some boys don't grow out of it...
