What do you listen to when you're in the car...?

particularly if you've got the children with you?
do you listen to 'wheels on the bus' 20 times, story tapes or do you just have 'adult' radio or music on?

Last night we listened - and sang along - to "Jingle Bells" because DS found the tape with Christmas songs.

ghengis · 11/06/2004 10:47

Me: radio 4, Me plus kids: crappy nursery rhyme tape (for DD of 3) or local commercial radio station (DS of 11). If I want them to calm down I pull rank and put on Classic FM!

marialuisa · 11/06/2004 10:50

Just adult music. At the momet DD is word perfect on "99 problems" and a 3 year old probably shouldn't be. She particularly likes Sandy Riveira's "changes" and has a preference for uplifting house .

She has a few nursery rhyme tapes for her sing-along cassette thing but TBH she only really listens to Hi-5 (courtesy of a lovely mumsnetter) which i don't mind too much or story tapes. I think it's because we've never really "done" nursery rhymes thanks to the gaping hole in my knowledge of english kids' culture!

katierocket · 11/06/2004 11:34

I was thinking how good it would be to have the radio equivalent of cbeebies. Songs, short stories, simple games. Good for nursery run or trips out or when driving long distances.

what does everyone think?

Twinkie · 11/06/2004 11:38

Classic FM - DD loves it!!

Hulababy · 11/06/2004 11:42

Radio 2 in a morning if I can persuade DD that I have to. Otherise it's a CD full of Disney Songs (Nellie the Elephant, etc.), Cat in the Hat stories CD or a CD of nursery rhymes at the moment. I actually think I need to change her Cds though as getting fed up of these ones.

codswallop · 11/06/2004 11:45

I leave the kids stuff on by mistkae till i realise that I aged 34 am lisatening to a lrge pirple dinosaur

Frenchgirl · 11/06/2004 11:47

Classic FM here too and dd loves it! We went through a phase when she insisted on story tapes (Princess MirrorBelle, v good!, and percy the park keeper, good too, but I much prefer Classic FM...). Then my tape player bit of the car radio started playing up, so we've stopped tapes. Can't say I really miss them

codswallop · 11/06/2004 11:51

aha wait till you move on to barney cds!

smellymelly · 11/06/2004 11:53

you all sound really old!!!!! LOL

I listen to house, trance, Drum and Bass and ambient, stuff like 'euphoria' and 'Gatecrasher'!!! With a bit of funk and hip hop thrown in.

And my kids love it, they are always dancing about in the back... We have had a bit of Bob The Builder too, but I can't cope with that for too long!

katierocket · 11/06/2004 11:59

LOL cods, the number of times I'm halfway home after dropping ds at nursery happily singing to myself "heads, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes".

I think once you start with the kids stuff that's when it becomes hard to play your own music or radio station because they winge until you put theirs on but if you've always played adult stuff they just accept it.

What do you reckon to a cbeebies radio station though? (stories, songs, games)

OP posts:
Blu · 11/06/2004 12:45

A mixture. The Bob the B story tape and we all do the sound effects, a couple of bouncy kids tapes, but DS (nearly 3) enjoys a good selection of lively soul classics, David Bowie and Prince. Otherwise, DP's irritating / depressing / grating compilation tapes unitl I pull rank as the driver and insist in silence. Then I have to sing 'Kookaburra sits in the old Gum Tree' 101 times in silly voices for DS.

codswallop · 11/06/2004 12:46

smelly - you sound all teengaery!

Blu · 11/06/2004 12:46

And scissor sisters.

KR: We sing 'Head shoulders Cheese on Toast'

katierocket · 11/06/2004 12:50

like the scissor sisters and strangely addicted to The Streets new album.

But no one has answered my question re: cbeebies style radio station? come on, what do you think?

OP posts:
Fio2 · 11/06/2004 12:57

kids screaming, moaning, fighting etc etc

Azure · 11/06/2004 13:14

I think it's a great idea Katierocket.

Twinkie · 11/06/2004 13:17

But Katierocket I can;t think of a worse thing than having to listen to that tripe in the car as well as at home all day - it drives me crazy!!!!

Nice short stories would be ok read by someone who does lots of funny voices (like Mr Tiern my infant school teacher who read us Charlottes Web and did all the voices - he inspired me to read everything I can get my hands on )

But no to Barney, Tweenies, bloody Kevin and Blue and any of those thigs that I leave the house to escape from!!

Good idea though just would hate to have to listen to it myself!!

Frenchgirl · 11/06/2004 13:22

cbeebies radio station: aaaaarrrrggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
would give me road rage, sorry katie!

katierocket · 11/06/2004 13:22

I know twinkie, not suggesting you listen to it when in car on your own

personally we're in a situation where DS expects nursery rhymes or story tapes and we either give in or listen to him moaning on while we listen to something else, plus if it keeps him quiet I'm all for it! BUT I get sick of the same things and I thought a radio station offering choice would be a good idea.

OP posts:
gothicmama · 11/06/2004 13:25

have a mixture twenty mins each to choose what we listen to

Tortington · 11/06/2004 17:55

have older kids so listen to the radio they start singing t will as do i. i have 3 fav radio stations and am a compulsive flicker when driving. have done myself a compilation tape yesterday and listened to it today a bit of kula shaker, whitesnake, linkin park, britney spears and pink! that give me and dd somethng to sing about , me and dh, and all of us in places. but i love them all!

i do find that quiet breeds quiet in the car. and so when i am annoyed i turn the radio or tape off and everyone shuts up!

tallulah · 11/06/2004 18:56

We never got into the habit of playing kiddies stuff in the car after Dd was about 2. The driver chooses! Sadly now it's Radio 2 or nothing in my car because my "new" car doesn't have a CD player & I no longer own any tapes Makes for very long journey of an evening once Drive Time has finished.

(DH has a CD player in his car & chooses to listen to Radio 4. Would swap but his car is cr*p!)

foxinsocks · 11/06/2004 19:02

ooh we have the 'cat in the hat and other stories' by Dr Seuss at the moment. I never thought I would be relieved to hear that CD but there are only so many times you can listen to that blasted Wheels on the Bus one before you go mad (P.S. have you ever noticed that no matter what children's song CD you buy, they pretty much have the same songs AND the same singers singing them no matter what brand the CD is!). Thank goodness we have moved on to stories.

Other than that, radio 5 or Heart/capital
