I remember there being a top 3 tunes thread a while ago but wondered what all of you are listening to when you have the chance/while you are washing up/when you can get nursery rhymes or SClub7 out of the CD player. And do you ever go to any gigs? I've just seen Doves at the Glasgow Barrowlands and am listening to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club as I type and PJ Harvey's new album is fab. What have you bought lately????

Oh, I sound so old...

Janus · 23/05/2002 13:01

Ah Tinker, if she was on Jools Holland then that's a good enough recommendation for me, I love Jools. Has anyone got the Jools Holland album that came out just before Xmas with loads of guest appearances, Sting, Suggs, etc, I love it.

lou33 · 23/05/2002 13:21

I want to get the Limp Bizkit album as I am going through a second youth right now! And will definitely get the new Eminem one when it comes out. Recently bought Fun Lovin Criminals album Mimosa which is fab.Btw Asda are doing some great bargains on cd's. We got Jimmy Hendrix, Nina Simone, Style Council, Human League, David Bowie, all £3.97 each!

Bexi · 23/05/2002 13:47

Jenny2998 - I saw the Foo Fighters live a few years ago, don't they rock? I've just bought the new Breeders album, it's not brilliant but better then the reviews would lead you to believe. I'm going to see them live next Thursday in Manchester, I'm really looking forward to it, it will be the first gig I've been to since dd was born 2.5 years ago.

bea · 23/05/2002 16:53

i went to see belle and sebastian about a week before dd was born.. the boy with the arab strap is our fabourite for bouncing around the room and it always makes the monkey laugh!....

billy bragg is playing in brum in a couple of months but sadly i'm going to be in devon for a wedding!!... i love billy even though his latest album is not particulary one of my faves... i love vintage billy!!!

but then again i love pop too... i've seen steps and boyzone too! great for a good night out... lots of screaming and jumping up and down... would like to go see westlife next!! Ha! Ha! dh has always said my taste in music is rather ecletic!!!

salalex · 23/05/2002 21:23

Rhiannon, I'd never have guessed you were a mod! Doves album is pretty good Janus, although I loved the first so much, it's a bit hard to live up too. Sure I'll get into it after a few more listens. Am I the only one who is dares admit that she doesn't mind SClub 7 that much when they're on in the car for the 57th time. Even been to see them, but it was for dd of course! Anybody got Badly Drawn Boy About a Boy soundtrack? Thought the film was pretty much pants but the music is good.

'Don't Stop Movin'' was one of the best singles of last year! I pretended I bought it for my daughter.

cherry · 23/05/2002 22:10

I think everyone loves a bit of S Club really. Even dh has been caught singing along!

jenny2998 · 23/05/2002 22:56

Yeah vote me in

I haven't been to a gig since before ds (3 1/2) I would so love to...

Willow2 · 23/05/2002 23:00

Marvin Gaye, Mary J Blige, Missy Elliot, The Strokes, Turin Brakes, Dre, Lauren Hill... and The Wheels On The Bus go round and round... and round... and round ..(the sooner he destroys that tape the better).

Willow2 · 23/05/2002 23:02

forgot some....Badly Drawn Boy, Radiohead, The Leaves, Simeon

bossykate · 01/06/2002 19:43

just an update for those of you interested in the new moby album "18".

those who enjoyed "play" will like it imo. a couple of criticisms - not much development from "play", an identical formula really - expect to hear these tunes everywhere! fewer tunes that immediately grab - listened to "play" incessantly after i got it, have not felt the same need to hear the tracks over and over again, but then have much less time now!

best track imo is the current single - "we are all made of stars".

a buy recommendation then for those who like the previous one - sorry i lack the musical vocabulary to really explain further why i liked it!

bossykate · 30/08/2002 23:06

have been listening to idlewild tonight and really enjoying it. i do however find it very derivative - can spot rem, echo & the bunnymen and stone roses influences very strongly. my dh says it is not derivative it is just that we are so old we can spot the influences more easily!

jodee · 30/08/2002 23:12

Bossykate, I'd somehow missed your earlier review of Moby, so would you say 7 out of 10?

Yikes, I'm out of touch, who are Idlewild?

Have hardly sat down and really listened to anything much (new) in ages, but had Massive Attack/Blue Lines on earlier.

bossykate · 30/08/2002 23:24

hi jodee, some time has passed since my moby review and i have to say i have not listened to it since! not a great recommendation, is it? on that basis, i would have to score it max 6/10.

my dh is a real music fan and buys loads of new cds - my normal reaction is "turn down that racket!" can't say much about idlewild except they are an up and coming, critically acclaimed new band - next big thing, if you see what i mean.

i love that massive attack album - still really enjoy listening to "unfinished sympathy".

earlier on i was also listening to macy gray (first album), david gray (first album) and coldplay (first album) - at least i'm assuming they're first albums, maybe just the first ones that came to my attention.

what else have you been listening to recently?

Hi Bossykate, hmmm, not sure whether to go for Moby's new one or not, then - probably not!

I've also been listening to Parachutes - almost bought the new one yesterday, it was playing in the music store I went in - although that too sounds like their previous offering.

Have to confess to mostly listening to a variety of old stuff. Been bopping around the living room to old dance stuff like The Gap Band and Rockers Revenge, with a sprinkling of Morrissey thrown in!

Star, do give us a review of Eva Cassidy's album, she certainly has a beautiful voice.

slug · 31/08/2002 14:10

The sluglet is as I type bouncing on the floor to Primal Scream's latest offering.

Queenie · 31/08/2002 15:38

Been listening to Norah Jones - I love it, don't know about the neighbours though. Very mellow.

leese · 31/08/2002 19:25

Queenie - agree about Norah Jones - brill. Also listening to new Eva Cassidy, and off to get new Alison moyet tomorrow - worth waiting for apparently!

Ellaroo · 31/08/2002 19:37

Also love Norah Jones, stunning voice , along with Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, U2, Heather Nova, Matchbox 20, Counting Crows, Paul Simon. Dh is off to a gig tonight - am feeling very jealous as I haven't been to one for ages.

Zero 7 - simple things, incidental background music on adverts, voice over music and holiday shows. It's best described as soulful downtempo melodies, very cool and would go down a treat in any wine bar, definitely my soundtrack for the summer. Looking forward to buying liberty x cover version of mantronix 'I just got to have your love' brings back memories from my clubbing days. Also love underworlds new single.

mears · 01/09/2002 20:49

Edible Tarmac - my son's group ( 15yrs). They are going to be as big as U2

debster · 02/09/2002 14:08

Coldplay's new album is fab, although I do detect a certain U2 influence in there. Can't remember what it's called though.
