Going to introduce a zero tolerance policy of 'no food outside the kitchen-diner' plus 'no shoes on in the house'. Will my carpets still end up horribly stained?

my mum had new beige carpet in her flat on huge dining landing. It was the worst thing she could have done to me with 4 kids and she lived by herself and when she moved out it was full of stains. Thankfully now she has laid lino ( I know it sounds awful) throughout her bungalow. It is a no pattern off white colour and is warmer than laminate and looks brill. My sister and I were horrified when she said she was getting lino but there is some good and expensive stuff out there. I would defo consider it for kids bedrooms.

nikcola · 01/06/2004 13:05

no dont do it

katierocket · 01/06/2004 13:08

we've got beige on hall stairs and landing
it's ok actually but do have it cleaned very regularly.

NancyKominsky · 01/06/2004 13:57

We have v expensive beige carpet in our sitting room and it is ruined - we've had it two years. And my kids are quite neat and tidy and we always take our shoes off when walking around the house! Will never have it again unless it is Scotchgarded.

have got quite dark beige (if that makes sense) and it's kind of ok: needs professional cleaning every 6 months or so and we have one dodgy stain which was either cat sick or potty training accident - can't remember which and it doesn't bother me too much, But it might have done if I'd paid for it - was in when we moved. I did however get my dining room chairs re-upholstered in cream. That was - as dm warned - utter madness. I still relive the moment, at a party less than a week after we got them, when I watched, in slow motion, a big fat glob of raspberry coulis fall from someone's spoon...had to take a snap decision whether to get out some cleaner there and then, interrupting a big group of people having fun, and looking like a totally materialistic paranoid moo or whether to start the process of getting them so disgusting that I could justify having them redone in a darker colour. I opted for the latter and I reckon it'll take another year...

We have the same policy, doesn't work.

monkey · 01/06/2004 14:46

we had it pre kids, and even tho we were careful - no spillages etc it still looked blackish around the edges - dirty draughts??? Can't imagine choosing carpet over wood or tiles. I hoover my tiled & wood floors, then mop & the water is black. You can't mop carpets. Imagine all the crap that's in them? Really unheigenic. sorry can't spell today.

have you decided?

Ixel · 01/06/2004 14:51

We have wooden flooring in every room...except ds's bedroom...yep, beige carpet. Dh made that decision. got a huge playmat from Ikea to cover most of the space in the centre.

Jaxmum · 01/06/2004 14:54

Well Monkey - We already have a lot of wood going on. I dont want wood everywhere.

Oh bugger, i wanted beige carpet for the stairs. Had just about managed to persuade dp too. Oh well back to the drawing board.

Hulababy · 01/06/2004 16:49

We have very light creamy biege ones in the bedrooms here and they aren't too bad. TBH DD's room is generally covered in so many toys you struggle to see it anyway And we have a no shoes policy in the house anyway - always have had; can't bear to think where outdoor shoes might have been. Was really strict on it when DD was tiny and laying and crawling on floor - yuk!

TBH we don't think about it at all. DH split tea on our bedroom first week in but he cleaned it up straight away and you can't tell. Been in 10 months now and dso far so good.

juniper68 · 01/06/2004 17:00

A friend of mine with 2 kids and lots of visitors got a mottled effect beige carpet and it doesn't show dirt. Or maybe she cleans it all the time? She says not but she does have that mad cleaning woman glint in her eyes at times

Jaxmum · 01/06/2004 17:10

Hey I wonder if its this....
This month's specially chosen carpet is SHEER LUXURY from our Trustmark Collection, a range of carpets renowned for incredible stain resistance. Sheer Luxury is a 100% nylon Saxony that is available in 11 subtle colours and benefits from R2X stain protection to give added peace of mind. The Trustmark R2X Stain Resistant System coats the carpet pile, this stops spillages penetrating the carpet fibres and offers a level of stain protection that is second to none. The carpet's super heavyweight pile has a thick, de luxe feel, but is sufficient hard wearing to suit areas like the lounge, hall, stairs and landing.

Yes.

We had beige carpets fitted 3 years ago-pre dd.We have no pets & visitors are expected to remove their shes, but it has degenerated to a greyish colour now.Mystery stains just seem to appear from no-where.

We had it professionally cleaned 2 months ago & I was horrified at the colour of the water that was sucked out.Ironically before it was cleaned,we had never spilt tea or coffee on it,but since then we seem to be constantly trying to remove stains. If you do get the stains out, there seems to be a grubby ring where they were.I would NEVER have cream/beige carpets again, despite how proud I once was of them.

oxocube · 01/06/2004 17:45

Barking! Having said, I sometimes dream of having no husband, no kids, no animals and cream carpets throughout

happycat · 01/06/2004 18:08

same colour as biscuit crumbs......

JeniN · 01/06/2004 21:09

Mil has been saying how impractical our beige carpets are ever since we got them - it makes me seethe - particulalry as now we have dd she's probably right. I've decided that next time she says it my response will be 'yes, I like to live a little dangerously, skydiving, light-coloured carpets, you name it'. Life's too short to worry about carpets or have to live with one with a horrible pattern on it as she would have us do (theirs is HORRIBLE) IMO. My sister didn't help my case by walking into the lounge with doc martens covered in mud just when MIL was babysitting. She had a field day. Ta sis..

codswallop · 01/06/2004 21:18

yes as mad as a snake

Cam · 03/06/2004 21:33

I've got light (gold? beige? who knows what shade they used to be) carpets throughout my whole house and they looked very good before we had dd. However, they are all now stained very similarly so I guess you could say they still match.
