About to order beige carpets, am I mad?

Going to introduce a zero tolerance policy of 'no food outside the kitchen-diner' plus 'no shoes on in the house'. Will my carpets still end up horribly stained?

YES YOU ARE MAD

I inherited them and they are blackish up the stairs, every stain shows, you will be constantly walking on egg shells.

Do you have no children or pets? If so may be feasible

Tinker · 01/06/2004 11:33

Yes, and you will annoy your guests with a 'no shoes' policy.

sykes · 01/06/2004 11:34

I inherited them too. Spend a fortune on professional cleaning. Much worse when our cat and dog were still around but still pretty crap with small children and general life.

marialuisa · 01/06/2004 11:35

completely mad...Works in bedrooms but that's it.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2004 11:35

I think they will be OK provided the beige is not to whitey, I have a beige rug and a red one and definetely you can spot the dust, biscuit pieces and coca cola stains better in the dark one.
Your family will be able to abide by the no shoes policy, the visits... dear how do they do it to always walk on soil, oil stains and dog poo before getting into the house? it goes agains all posibilities but happens

Jaxmum · 01/06/2004 11:38

Hi, Ive got some nice men with white coats at the door saying their going to take me away.

Our beige carpets are on the stairs and landing only and they're filthy. No food and generally no shoes go anywhere near them!

Branster · 01/06/2004 11:47

yep, you're mad!!
i found the worse stains are the ones from plain water. strange that, but true. any drop of watre that dd would have dropped on the carpet, shows up after a few weeks in a sort of greyish colour. we are forvere cleaning our beige carpet but it's an absolute nightmare to keep it clean. i think there are some sort of treatments that the carpet fitters can add on top of the carpet but they contain incredible amounts of chemicals and are v v v bad to have in the house so i wouldn't reccoment that.
we're unfortunate enough to have chosen a cream carpet for stairs and landing as well, this time with a sort of honeycomb pattern (like grass flooring, but this is actual wool carpet with a sort of 3d effect , don't know how to decribe it). it cost a fortune and it lookes disgusting. i hate it!!!!

LunarSea · 01/06/2004 12:04

We have beigeish (or mushroom would be more accurate) carpets - dating from pre-children - and have now bought a carpet shampooing machine so that the hall carpet gets shampooed at the same frequency the others get vacuumed. Doesn't really take much longer as we have the machine on hand. Due to lose the carpets in favour of wood flooring when our extension finally gets built though.

spacemonkey · 01/06/2004 12:06

yes, my light stone carpet in the living room looks rotten after only one year

spacemonkey · 01/06/2004 12:06

brown swirly 70s stylee is the best carpet to have with kids

charliecat · 01/06/2004 12:11

I have a beige carpet and although my kids follow the no food rule other peoples dont and its had a few chocolate smudges so far. You are mad! Mine was a hand me down though from a very posh house so at least I didnt buy it.

jimmychoos · 01/06/2004 12:21

Interested in this as we were thinking of lightish carpets for stairs and upstairs rooms. Can't decide tho. maybe should start another thread on flooring recommendations for stairs and bedrooms (we have wood downstairs)

Fio2 · 01/06/2004 12:23

yes madhead. We had one in our old lounge and it showed up EVERYTHIUNG, even water stains, very very very annoying

Jaxmum · 01/06/2004 12:35

So basically, its not possible to have light carpets without them getting ruined, period?

noddy5 · 01/06/2004 12:41

DON'T DO IT I was sure I could handle natural carpets but they have been down 1 year and look terrible and I only have 1 ds.I tried every thing but accidents happen. We are about to move and have cleared some areas and we can really see how awful they look.Even stain removers mark them!

suzywong · 01/06/2004 12:47

Yes - you are mad
My airforce blue carpet is like the floor of a pub, so to speak, so god knows what beige will turn out like.

CountessDracula · 01/06/2004 12:47

jimmychoos please do as I am about to embark on choosing new carpets for stairs/landing and bedrooms and need advice.

SpringChicken · 01/06/2004 12:52

Jaxmum - we have no pets but do have baby on the way and have beige carpet up the stairs, on landing, in bathroom and in baby's room.
We have had them since January and they haven't got 1 stain on yet - although, we don't have messy children as yet, there are always alot of kids about and nothing drastic has happened so far!
However, i do have to hoover at least once a day as the fluff from DP's black sox gets stuck all over. I would rather guests kepts their shoes on if they've got black sox on - my pet hate.

oliveoil · 01/06/2004 12:58

We got cheapo beige in our last house (to sell it) and had a no shoes/food policy and it didn't get dirty. HOWEVER, it did pee our friends with children off (we didn't have any then) who had to struggle in the tiny porch with stroppy 3 year olds, putting shoes on and off.

Go for wood or laminate is my mantra now.

Blu · 01/06/2004 13:02

Another one questioning you sanity....

Twinkie · 01/06/2004 13:03

We have beige everywhere but the kitchen and one bedroom (but will be beige soon!!) - Love it - it is a pain when you get something on it and have to clean it immediatly but at least its clean and to be honest I think its a good idea to get professionals in once a year to have all the carpets thoroughly cleaned - gives me piece of mind that there are no yuckies living in our carpet - or at least less than in every one elses house - as for having to take your shoes off I do in everyone's house so they can extend me the same courtesy!!
