The gloves issue

Please help settle an arguement.
DS1 is at nursery now, and keeps loosing his gloves. I think it's perfectly reasonable to stick his gloves on string through his sleeves like my mum did with me, but DH thinks it is cruel and will just lead to bullying.

I haven't noticed any of the other kids with gloves on string, am I just behind the times?

You can buy some little clips which clip the glove to the arm of the coat - a bit more modern than the old string trick.

How old is he? At nursery age are they likely to bully over something like this? Would they even notice?

beckybrastraps · 03/01/2007 17:33

I did it with ds's mittens (yes, mittens!) in reception, and no-one else batted an eyelid. If you were still doing it at 13 then maybe...

bullying at nursery

Enid · 03/01/2007 17:41

tell the staff to keep a closer eye on the gloves

iota · 03/01/2007 17:43

mine had gloves on elastic at nursery

ediemcreedie · 03/01/2007 17:43

Dh calls them "idiot mittens". They used to twang the kids by pulling one so the other one whacked their ear.

Fgs it isn't even cold at the moment.

paulaplumpbottom · 03/01/2007 17:45

I think the string is fine, its not old fashioned its classic.

Rofl

beckybrastraps · 03/01/2007 17:47

Your dh would refer to a preschool age child's gloves as "idiot mittens"?

misdee · 03/01/2007 17:48

reminds me, must see if i have enough elastic to do dd2's gloves tonight.

ediemcreedie · 03/01/2007 17:48

Yes to her face obviously, "Oi thicko get your idiot mittens on".

misspinkcat · 03/01/2007 17:50

Yes so they do exist

my ds (4) has gloves tied through his coat on elastic.
unfortunately he and his friends have discovered taht if you play aeroplanes with them, they can go fast and far.

So - far from making him a laughing stock it's made him a bit of a playground hero.

Now a lot of the mums are putting in elastic!

LIZS · 03/01/2007 17:54

I always used to put them on elastic. Now I have got dd to put them in her hat each time.

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 03/01/2007 18:02

Ds had his on a string . But as they were frog puppet mittens, all the other kids loved them.
I also threaded the string through the hanging loop of his coat after the day he came out with it up one sleeve between his legs & down the other!

Twiglett · 03/01/2007 18:05

"They used to twang the kids by pulling one so the other one whacked their ear. " ROFL

Twiglett · 03/01/2007 18:06

personally I think gloves are for wimps .. my kids still have both hands and don't wear gloves

couldn't be bothered with the putting them on / finding them / losing them / sewing them on to elastic palava

I think we mollycoddle 'em too much these days

send em down the mines .. that's what I say (OK I don't but I just noticed where my rant was heading)

SpaceCadet · 03/01/2007 18:08

my elder two always had mittens on strings as small children, nothing wrong with it imo.
ds is now 13 and im still wondering if his entire belongings should be attatched to him via a string..he left his school shoes at school recently

SpaceCadet · 03/01/2007 18:09

going down t'mines is a bit extreme twiglett.....maybe up a chimney instead!

Mercy · 03/01/2007 18:16

dd had mittens on a piece of wool (they were made like that) up until Reception.

She tells me that they too babyish for Year 1 so I bought 2 pairs of gloves for 50p each in Ethel Austin, and one slightly 'nicer' pair in Mothercare. That way it doesn't matter if they get lost.

And it is cold atm, imo!

misspinkcat · 03/01/2007 18:16

If you google them there are loads of references.

sockmonkey · 04/01/2007 09:12

He is only three, so I didn't think bullying would be an issue, but DH did.
Now I know they are called "idiot mittens" it does make me think twice

My dd had a pair on string and wore them in Nursey and Reception and no-one said anything to her.
